new to recording/production here

I'm looking to buy an audio interface to record music one-by-one multitrack from my synth into some yet-to-be-determined DAW to be digitally mixed and made into songs.

my budget is small...

I'm thinking either Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen or Steinberg UR-22.
the UR22 looks good because it has MIDI meaning I won't have to buy another seperate thing to sequence my synthesizer. However it only has two XLR inputs and I'm only really familiar with 1/4 inch type sounds. My synth has an XLR output, but I usually use the 1/4 inch so that I can run it through effects pedals.

So is it a good idea to convert 1/4 in to XLR using some kind of converter? how much will that cost?
>>
>>74004406

The UR22 does have TRS inputs, they're the big hole in the middle of the XLR input.

>So is it a good idea to convert 1/4 in to XLR using some kind of converter?

Never do that in a live setup, but it's decent enough unless there's shit wiring on your room

>how much will that cost?

10 bucks
>>

how bad is this?
>>
>>74004574
great seems like the obviously better option then.

have you any experience with either?
I don't really want to spend more than $150 at this point and two mic inputs + midi I/O seems like a great deal. but obviously quality comes first, no latency or clipping or issues...

this doesn't do much for me, what do you want to achieve? the middle section is more interesting than the beginning, which is too repetitive. also, why is it in mono? might become more powerful if you widen it.

Hey /prod/. So I'm in the process of transferring cassette recordings from my 4 track to my DAW, and I'm trying to mitigate noise. I know you will always have some noise with an analog medium like cassette tapes, but I've already got a problem with a shitty noise floor with my audio interface, so the recording in my DAW has a bunch of jank digital noise on top of the noise from the tape.

I do have izotope rx 4, so the denoiser can get rid of all that shitty hum and noise. But this obviously effects the eq of the recording, and it sounds muffled and boxy with no definition.

Can I just look at the spectrum analyzer of the denoiser and boost the frequencies being cut to compensate? Boosting the eq around 2k as an experiment already makes it sound more normal. Anybody have any similar experiences with digitizing cassettes and or just dealing with noise removal in general?
>>
>>74007060

Workflow possibly but I think that's stupid as well

Hipster cool factor

There is desirable saturation and "warmth." You can absolutely emulate it and pretty much nobody can tell the difference, but if you can afford it why not just do the real thing lol.

(The above goes for pretty much all analog gear with a few exceptions where analog emulation just isn't there yet and some exactl emulations of popular gear don't sound exactly like their counterparts)

the loop isn't even, notice how the clicks are about 2 seconds apart, except the first and middle ones are about 3 seconds? you can account for hat in a drum pattern, but you can also just make it even.

It is workflow. I have hardware keyboards, and I'm more of a player than a producer. Working in my DAW is just uninspiring and I also feel like I have an infinite amount of options which is daunting and prevents me from getting any work done. Limitations spur creativity and force me to start working and stop being a perfectionist. The immediacy and tangibility of the 4 track feels a lot more natural to me.

I know that the "tape" (You) were referring to is pic related and that cassette tapes pail in comparison, but I'm not about to buy a reel to reel anytime soon. There are plenty of emulations out there, but I enjoy the musical effects that you can get with cassettes like making physical tape loops, reversing things, and fucking with the tape speed and thus the pitch of your recordings. All of these things are much more immediate with a 4 track than producing these effects with a DAW. Cassettes aren't hi-fi, and I am by no means an audiophile, but it still has a different sound than digital. To each his own tho
>>
>>74008270
Your voice is not bad but you're kinda boring to listen to. It's too monotone.
>>
>>74004875

I had a 2i2 which is similar to the Solo and had a couple of problems with the drivers. I've been told that the newer generations are really great though. I can't tell you any experiences about the UR22 because I never tried it, but a friend of mine told me it was great enough for tracking vocals and recording guitar.

How important is it to have a good interface?
I got a sm58 but no interface. I'm tempted to buy the cheapest piece of shit I can find but I'm wondering if it'd be smarter to save up for a couple of months and getting something of quality.

>>
>>74007060
What brand/model is your interface? Any interface that adds that much noise isn't even worth existing. Are you sure you're giving it a loud enough signal going into it from the get-go and aren't feeding it a quiet signal and then amplifying it after the fact?

>>
>>74010280
A good interface is definitely one of the most important things when it comes to recording, so going for the cheapest piece of shit possible is going to bite you in the ass. If you're short on cash you should be able to find a good (albeit discontinued) interface on the used market for cheaper than a new one with similar specs.

Does your computer have a line-in jack (usually light blue colored) on it? You might be able to get away with using that in lieu of buying an interface if your computer's got a decent sound chip on the motherboard. You'd still need something like a mic preamp though, but those are a fair bit cheaper than an interface with one built-in so it may be worthwhile to go that route.
>>
>>74011155
what makes a voice appealing? What is the draw factor in all this? More specifically in hip-hop People want a voice that sticks out and is unique, but tolerable, like Chance the Rapper, or to a lesser extent Danny Brown. How can one manage to sell their voice?
>>
>>74011216
Depends on the music but there's lot of factors.

Being intelligible is definitely important as long as you're not making death metal or dreampop. Being able to sing along to a song is something that gets people drawn to music. Relating to lyrics does as well.
>>
>>74008284
Yeah totally just do you

Plz stop the limitations inspire creativity meme though that shit is so Reddit
>>74008354
>okay enough*

>>74009170
If you know massive really well stick with it. Another wavetable capable synth is serum, which in some ways is also a step up

Depends what you want
>>74010280
Extremely important. I can tell you from experience a gain hungry mic, especially an sm58 needs a better interface. Those cheap shures are famous for how they sound with quality pres, but nobody tells you that. They sound like shit with low end interfaces, and can be finicky

>>74010945
You have to be really fucking good and write really fucking interesting music without vocals, yes it's true.
>>
>>74011216
i always try to add a vocal element to my music. it makes the song more memorable because words are easier for a lot of people to remember,
>>
I fell for the lofi meme

>>
>>74011200
I'm still gonna buy a cheap piece of shit to experiment in the meanwhile (I found a really fucking cheap one) but thanks for the tips. I still haven't found a good one in the used market

My computer is a piece of shit too. Technology is extremely expensive in the third world.

Lexicon lambda. It's the only interface I've ever had, so it's seen some wear and tear. I think the usb connection itself might be responsible for some of the noise, but I could be wrong.

>>
>>74011694
lol what made you say that????

>>
>>74011642
By the time it gets to the USB connection it's going to have already been converted to a digital signal, so any audio problems that would result from a bad USB connection would be glitches or dropouts, not any sort of noise overtop the signal.

How's your gain staging? Is your 4-track outputting a nice strong signal?
>>
>>74011734
I had the master fader cranked up almost all the way, but I still had to turn up the line inputs on my interface a lot higher than I normally need to with my instruments. I could try recording it again with that extra bump, but I don't think it would make a huge difference. I'll experiment with it

>>74011363
hey lad, i live in third world too, let me give you some advices

1 - If possible, dont buy shit in your country, people scam you and add several ks to the actual price, if you can ask someone who travels to at least a 2nd world pisshole to buy you stuff, do that, if you don't know anyone look for cellphone contrabandists in facebook and ask them if they can bring it, if they can't either, make some calculations to see if its cheaper to pay import taxes and buy online, if it isn't, then buy from a place that gives you guarantees, don't buy second hand or from local online markets

2 - Don't buy locally assembled computers, i spent a good amount on a good asus laptop, but i later discovered it was assembled here and has a weird interference when i switch on the wifi; for what ive found online, every other person with the same problem has bought asus pcs locally assembled here, so i guess its due to shit/cheap assembly

3 - When looking for interfaces, also check mixers, some of them are usb connected and support sending every channel to the daw, this is great cause for the same price of a meme interface with 2 inputs you get an 8-c-hannel mixer, this might be useful, and i wish i had known about it before. You'd have to research a fuck lot about cheap mixers doe, there's some shifty chinese shit that works horrible out there, stay away from "moon" (unless it is in your "very cheap" range, then go for it, 8c-h-annels is GOOOOOD)

4 - If you are just starting, pace yourself, you don't need to have good quality right away, just get some decent headphones for working, download asio4all, and when you are doing the final mixdown check in every single speaker/headphone available to you, that will do the trick from a starting standpoint, if it sounds well in both your more expensive and cheaper shit, then it probably sounds OK

5 - Work with references track bypassing the master bus, use filters to check every range of freqs is as similar as possible

This is unrelated but my boss wrote the theme music for some HBO thing, I think HBO news or something like that in the 90s. It's a pretty cool story because he did this thing where every night he would write something new in his home studio and keep it in this bag of tapes (it was DAT at the time). He had a meeting with the HBO people because he had this music he wrote for the theme song.

He was at the meeting with a full board room of people looking at him, when he suddenly realized he grabbed the wrong bag of tapes. So he just popped in some random tape that he didn't even remember writing, and played it. After a few seconds of it playing, one guy was like "That's perfect". It became the theme song and he ended up making I think over 100k of that shit.

So keep writing every day guys

Don't know what this threads stance on piracy is, I'm not a regular but:

A few years back (2012 ish) Fabfilter had this thing on Pro-Q 2 where it would produce this ear shattering noise if it detected that your copy wasn't genuine/trial ran out. Right now I'm using a pirated copy of Saturn, and have been for a bit, but I'm living in constant fear that it will shreik and in worst case ruin my speakers.

Does anyone know if the shriek is a thing on Saturn aswell? One that I need to worry about if I'm using a cracked copy without a "phone-home-blocker"? program?

Ugh, trying to write emotional chord progressions is hard.

If I try to use too many notes in the scale for the chords, a lot of the chords will sound the same.

>use automation on your *subtractive* eq
I figured, but why? When?
>>
>>74021165
>the reviews are positive and the price is great
This is normally the case for low end gear: "great for the price" translates to least shit in that price range from people who've never used better gear

I'm all itb so I can't recommend you one from experience. I have a friend who had one and his had a few keys pop off, felt cheap to me... i'm just saying if you want something of quality spend more on it. it doesn't matter that it's your first... like at all

so far as i can tell (i've been curious about picking a keyboard up to) there's a huge gap between cheap shit and expensive but not as functional or attractive midi keyboards. the most *inbetween* option i know of is komplete kontrol. a lot of people just use older digital synths, which seems like the undeniable best choice if all you want is a keyboard seeing as how you can pick one up for the same price as an expensive midi controller and also get a synth out of it.

for example: you may highpass your guitar at 200 hz to let the bass breathe or have a high mid scoop to make room for the vocals, but in the solo guitar intro, or and instrumental break, yuo don't need those cuts on. automatioooooon

before and after the kick enters everything is the same in your song. i still feel like you need a bass or something going on for most of the song though....

I realised this is slightly off-topic, but please bear with me.

I'm getting a keyboard.
I mostly just want to plug it to my PC and use VSTs, but it would be a nice bonus to have a standalone keyboard as well.
3 or 4 octaves should do, I'm not too worried about that.
Might get driver issues with the old synth? I dunno.

In my situation, would you go for a newer, small MIDI controller styled dumb keyboard, or an older 90's MIDI synth? Why?

if you know your way around sampling it's pretty easy.
what you need is
>random drum breaks
>amen break
>loud sub bass
>vocal samples from action or horror movies
>analog synths
>piano loops
>160 to 170 bpm

after you have all that you then have to
>chop the drum breaks and rearrange to taste. some songs focus more on the creativity of your drum placement and bass, while others focus more on the melodies, samples and synths
>take you vocals and put them on the build up. on the drop you could add vocal chops from the same samples
>the drop should focus on either the drum arrangement and bass, samples or the synths. but for the most part jungle drops tend to focus on just the drums and the bass
>the intro should feel kinda slow and uplifting, so when the drop comes it feels more aggressive.

and that's really all I can say.
of course this is the most basic way to make a jungle song. the best advice I have is to get creative, which is something I can't do for you.

Convince me not to buy this Akai MPC232 at $180 USD (it was $300 from a few months ago)

It has 16 pads (good not great quality), 8 knobs, 8 faders, 8 buttons, easy arpeggiation controls, and a step sequencer. I don't want to spend that much money on a midi controller, it looks like it syncs well with FL studio, and I don't think saving up for maschine (muh samplepacks) or a keyboard-hybrid is worth it unless you're a richfag.

I have a Volca Sample. Not sure why this anon >>74019092 says it's no good for hiphop production. It's a fucking sampler (or a sample play backer) so I don't understand how it's not good for any genre really. A lot of the golden ere hiphop was made on a SP1200 which hasn't got half the features of the Volca and had about 2 seconds of sample time! I really like mine and I think it'd lend itself well to hiphop due to its slightly low bitrate, put some chopped up breaks into it and it'll sound really good.
It's not a full blown sampler though and at the price range it's in you won't get much else like it new. It also has some restrictions which might not make it so user friendly. For me having to sample into my computer, edit and load samples into software and then transfer them over to the Volca is too much hassle so I just use mine mostly as a drum machine.
Other samplers to look at are the Akai MPC's although they are probably out of your price range. Maschine mikro or mk2 although technically just software and a controller works pretty much like a MPC, so worth a look. Another option is to buy an old rack mount sampler like the classic emu's (E6400 ultra) or a akai and use a midi controller with that like the Akai MPD range.

also, an easy way to find bpm of an audio clip is to find the transient that would be the first beat of the bar, right click and set as 1.1.1, then find the transient that's the first beat of the second bar and drag it on the grid to be in that position.

when you click the first transient, it will show you the exact bpm of the one bar phrase and then you just make that your global tempo

because gaybelton has AIDS
it will "warp" the sample to the speed of which your track is so like people are saying if the detection is off it will just default to that. If you do not know the orig bpm like people are saying try to match the first bar and grid up.

I'd say though you should w/o sticking to the current grid (ie zoom in super super high powa), clip out the loop or a bar of what you know is to be the main tempo of the song/sample. Get it lined up then set the loop to your selection. Now listen and make sure you have the loop clipped out right so it does not "jump" on you ie start too early or too late.

Now, move that clip over to the start of a bar, and adjust the entire bpm until the grid matches your clipped loop perfectly. Now you have the bpm really pretty damn close I've found. A bit of a PITA and I'm sure there's other ways to do this but I've found this to work well. Then of course with the known BPM I use that in the imported sample and move the track back to the bpm I'm using, turn on warp and toss that mofo into the sampler or grid or whatever.

If you don't know the bpm outright it can be sorta shitty sometimes. This is why I like some outboard samplers that just bpm detect really fucking well in comparison for some reason. Even if they only say play back at 16/44.1

I want to record some music with my Zoom H5 but it sounds a bit off. Is it the mic quality? I'm using audacity in on fedora linux right now.

when I record on the mic itself, it sounds fine. I'll give it a shot on a windows machine.

who here has some schizo tier phonk for me to rap on, i have been wanting to get on this mental illness rapwave for a minute

thank
please respond
>>
>>74039086
it does sound too trebly, its fatiguing

it sounds like the drums are ducking the vocals in a jarring way

theres something weird going on with the compression - the crash cymbals being all smeared, the drums are trying to steal the thunder, the style of the processing on the drums sounds like it belongs in metal but the guitars and the singing sounds like tom petty or something
>>
>>74034607
boring is my only thought desu... though i like the percussion

fuck off and read

>>74039086
not trebly., i'd say your eq is good but the guitars are a little bright/not different enough for my taste

you're obviously not the best singer but you could double or SOMETHING man

>>74039156
>can someone tell me what to do with this
I hate that you're asking this...

scrap it and write something else... with less reverb. take those chords and play something feel good on a hip hop beat. resample this thing in some other weird shit

>>74040994
if you're good i've actually got a few beats who somebody told me yesterday he can't work with because he doesn't have the voice lol

Pretty much anything will do those sounds, he's just fucking with the filter envelope. *that* sound though you'll probably want something analog modeled. Google it. Al I've had is monark, which is a good moog emulation. Mini mogue va(?) is free

hey /prod/ I think I've had a slight breakthrough and I feel like sharing some advice.

I've seen a ton of people here saying that they can come up with a solid loop, but then they don't know where to go with it. I have the answer. It's all in the energy levels, man.

This is an old piece of knowledge but I feel like I finally just got it. Every song is based on the idea of rising and falling tension. Raise tension by adding or changing stuff, reduce tension by taking stuff away. It's so simple.

Yesterday, I made a bunch of "energy level diagrams" based on songs that I like. To do this, I just drew a typical graph with the Y-axis labeled "energy", and the X-axis was bars. I used some algebra to figure out the approximate number of measures in each song. As I listened to the song, I traced a line to represent the "energy" at each point in the song.

What I found is that most of the songs I like follow very similar patterns. A slow build up to the first peak, then a moderate reduction, followed by a more drastic reduction, then back to high energy.

Anyway, I thought I'd put my theory into practice today. I made a loop - nothing too special- and then just stretched it out by adding/ removing sections. Oh, and fills, always use lots of fills. Here it is: https://clyp.it/xmyheloh

I don't claim that its a fantastic song or anything, but I was surprised at how easy it was to transform a 15 second loop into a full length track. What do you think, /prod/? I'm not sure if this is actually good advice or if I just caught a bit of the schizophrenia.
>>
>>74049779
oh word, thanks a bunch
>>
>>74041673
Could you tell me why its boring?

>>74050184
Check out chord stuff by ben levin on youtube.
I'd say its fairly common, the idea of tension and release.

smoke, drink strong shit, and stop being a faggot and try to control your voice, make up a character to voice through

im sure you, like everybody else, has realized that in certain situations under different moods you change your voice to suit

more reverb, but automate it, let the transient go through almost dry then make it go up for the tail, down again for the next transient, do the same but with less reverb when the chords get less sparse

add a dry beat and then add at least two panned synth melodies falling like a cascade, slightly automate each note

big fat bass in the center, reverb it, but kill the stereo

compress and up the reverbed singing and then sidechain it to the chords

side chain everything to the kick, phat 808, but don't do 4 to the floor, syncopate it nicely, jazzy hats/ride on '15 with a delayed, reverberated, eqd version on the other side '15s

if you can add some chimes add some chimes, eq automate to make them sparkle
>>
>>74052017
I'm a different guy but I'd say that the harmony is the weakest part. Did you sample one chord? Study chord progressions for sure. All im hearing is one minor chord, which isn't terribly interesting

>>
>>74054627
Theres no hook, and not enough familiar elements i think. The instruments all seem like they're playing very basic patterns. I dunno, it's a little perplexing; i hear chords, bass, arps, drums, all good things to have, but it feels very static - as if its not going anywhere.

I think the chords are a bit odd, i would recommend trying some more familiar progressions (music theory is always the answer). And the instrumentation is a little flat. I'd recommend trying some exercises in melody writing. Try to write one full melody, then a counterpart. That should get you started.

>>74056250
In my opinion, the background noises (people talking or something) can make the mix feel a little cluttered at times. Bass also seems to be causing some distortion/ clipping. You could just call them stylistic decisions tho.
>>
>>74057692
Pretty sure those are quite common. In terms of build quality I'm sure its better than the first one, although I've never actually tried a novation midi controller myself.

Probably not bad for your first purchase
