Death metal is so fun to listen to, I can't get enough of it. I listen to it for the same reasons I listen to catchy pop. For black, instead, I like listening to it when I want to be alone because it really excels at setting a certain atmosphere (this is true for atmospheric bm but also for "kvlt" bm or shit like dso or blut aus nord), basically I like it for the same reasons I like post-punk. Also, you probably are giving the lyrics too much importance if it makes you think about an angsty teen: just enjoy the sounds. Which genres do you like? music is expression. there's quite a wheelhouse of things to express. that something is edgy or angsty isn't an inherently bad thing, and the complaint reeks of someone who's obsessed with image and is scared of being seen as edgy themselves

i'm more of a folk/jazz/electronic kind of guy, I like The Mars Volta though i'm not sure that's exactly metal. It's just every time I hear someone put on metal I either hate it or it makes me feel like there should be dragons flying around and burning shit, and then I feel like I should go out and find some crystal meth or something. It just seems to run me the wrong way, it also doesn't help that all the friends I had in hs who listened to it were all weird, annoying edgelords.

maybe some people enjoy that. the mars volta isn't metal, but surely you can understand getting ridiculous imagery from listening to them too. the music is bombastic and the lyrics are drug-fuelled insanity
