To me it just sounds like half-assed experimental shit with no rhyme or reason, like they just discovered studio equipment and pushed all the buttons. There's almost no focus, so if I ever try to focus in on listening to it instead of throwing it in the background and making brownies or something, I gain nothing. I listen to any record past DM and I can see Animal Collective actually putting effort into song structure and tunes. There's some melodies here and there, but not enough outside of, say, Essplode to care about. And don't even get me started on the harsh production, shit makes Coloring Book and Cherry Bomb look like George Martin worked on them.
