Digital fag here, looking to buy my 1st turntable and start buying records. My budget is sub ~$80. What should I know? Any rules if thumb? Where should I buy the record player?
Vinyl is a richbois game, up your budget or stick with mp3s like a normal human.
Not really good with turntables, but I know for a fact you're gonna have to buy used.

do you already have a stereo receiver setup? youll need an amp as well as record player. you can probalby find a decent player for that price but not the full set up unless you are lucky

Thats my plan

Yes I have an amp and speakers

on that budget look for secondhand, just always check if the turntable was cheap junk 40 years ago. Also look for turntables from the late seventies because they usually prioritize quality, over quantity of features.

Definitely won't be able to get a nice new one
Try local garage sales and thrift shops
Stay away from Crosley

Where are good places to look?

I got my deck from my elderly neighbor for like 10 bucks, which ended up having a value of like 200. So just try to look for people who would still have them up in their attic. This has gotten harder since the vinyl revival plague though so expect to keep looking if you want a decent one.

oh and be aware that a lot of turntables that are 'broken' simply need their belt replaced. it's cheap and easy to do, just don't tell the seller ;3
