is there any drone that sounds sad, as opposed to "monolithic"?
>>
the angelic process
>>
Drone is often either epic or lovecraftian
>>
>>73916414
I've been a long time fan of Boris, as far as guitar based drone goes, they are one of the most emotive bands out there. Their unique brand of drone is absolutely saturated with emotion.

>>
>>73916414
why not just listen to funeral doom instead of memedoom aka drone?

>>73916437
is not drone
it's mostly post-rock
>>
>>73916443
Drone is never epic and rarely lovecraftian

give recs please
>>
>>73916447
I'll listen, thank you. I just hate when bands are so presumptuous that they'll abandon a nice, emotional sound instead of sustaining it for ten-plus minutes to let you enjoy it fully

So this album, Dronevil, is a 2 disc album that was intended to be played separately then simultaneously over one another. The first half is a straight drone album, mostly just guitar fuzz and feedbag.

The second half is mostly slow, monolithic, and very sad guitar melodies.

Played together is the perfect example of a heart wrenching drone album.

Also Wata is waifu tier and deserves to be accredited with reinventing the guitar.

Why are there so many grimesfags yet so few Watafags? It's sad really

What, you are unable to do your own search or something?
>>
>>73916495
google funeral doom

warning: it's not emo music for shitgaze tfwnogf faggots who want to be even more inaccessible-minimal-elitist than the other emo faggots.

It's more along the lines of fat goth poetry about dead people.

As a person who can genuinely claim to be an oldfag, I can tell you it wasn't always like this.. Wata and Boris in general used to get all sorts of love on this board. Hopefully they will again with their new album, which is the best material they have put out in a very long time.

Also, believe it or not, Radiohead is also responsible for one of my favorite drone / ambient tracks of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0JvrQ1MrU8
>>
>>73916555
Agreed.

(sorry if the thread derails)
>>
>>73916586
Yeah, their new album is undoubtedly their best since Flood, super glad to see them return to drone metal again (and so well). Wata is mad qt too, very slept on nowadays, I think the New Noise Literacy series definitely hurt them
>>
>>73916586
>slows down a radiohead song that's supposed to be played at normal speed
>WOAH RADIOHEAD ARE SO GOOD AT DRONE

that is retarded

you indie post rock shitgaze fags are making corsetcore goth kids sound clever and deep.
>>
>>73916437
i have no idea why a lot of people think that that album is drone
>>
>>73916622
The original track is still just as compelling, just shorter. You are being needlessly antagonizing and combative when we are all here to enjoy the same thing. Treefingers is genuinely a good ambient / drone track, if not just a little short.

The drone parts in F#A#~ are god tier.
>>
>>73916447
I like Boris a lot, but their drone is not that good unless when they are making sort of 'emotional drone' music like feedbacker. But their purely-drone music tends to be a lot less interesting and less sophisticated than what Sunn o))) does.
>>
>>73916711
Absolutego is god-tier tho, same for their newest album

cause you're shoehorning Radiohead into a fucking Drone thread, and not even as a joke.
Get a fucking clue.
>>
>>73916771
The OP asked for drone that sounds sad, and instead of only replying to someone about the state of the board, he decided to contribute and shared a drone song that he thought was sad. You're definitely over-exaggerating this.
>>
>>73916771
its a good track, stop being so angry, its not good for your health my friend.
>>
>>73916805
How can you not understand that it's stupid to claim that Radiohead makes drone music, after posting a piece of music that they didn't create as a drone song and was slowed down by something else? How can you not understand that it's clearly a symptom of bad taste and ignorance that needs to be pointed out in order to eradicate it, thereby contributing to the thread by making the poster less idiotic?

If you don't insult this guy >>73916586
you're effectively shitposting.

If you insult him, you're effectively contributing.

did anyone else care for the Sunn O))) + Ulver collaboration a few years back? Thought it was half decent drone.
>>
>>73916870
>it's stupid to claim that Radiohead makes drone music
It would be stupid to claim that, but luckily he didn't do that
>>
>>73916414
i dont think you should be looking into drone music then. the whole point of drone is monotony and emotionlessness. when it is drone-metal in specific, it merely adds intensity and grandness. what you are probably looking for is post rock or experimental music with drone influence. Boris feedbacker is a good example. Tim Hecker's Virgins is more ambient than drone but still good.
>>
>>73916831
that is not the point. Stop being an idiot with shit taste, it's bad for the state of the board.

the solution is clear: stop liking Radiohead, even if some of their songs sound good when slowed down. That way you can successfully avoid being a retard. There are some bands that should be disliked by everybody, and Radiohead is one of them

I think OP understood that, he was just asking for exceptions. I would be lying if I said I wasn't expecting for this thread to be filled with Boris posts desu.

why

>>73916616
new album is good but best thing they ever put out since Flood? Come on, what about Feedbacker, pink and Altar?
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaSi7Gut7xM

don't mind me, just posting more god tier drone
>>
>>73916973
Shit, I forgot that Feedbacker is after Flood (big fan and can probably name their albums chronologically, just a moment of autism I guess), I honestly like Dear more than Pink (not denying that Pink is great), and I usually count Altar as more of a Sunn O))) album, but it is better than Dear.
>>
>>73916883
I actually listened to it today for the first time. It is great. Probably something like OP is looking for.
>>
>>73916973
>>73916616
Cool think about Boris is that in the middle of their discography between 2000 and 2005 --- in that 5 year time gap -- there is a god tier album for just about everybody. If you love post rock, noise, and stoner metal, you've got Pink. If you want drone with some melodic elements, you've got Feedbacker and Dronevil. If you want really esoteric, experimental Swans tier post rock and drone, you've got Flood. Doom metal and stoner rock? Heavy Rocks, Akuma No Uta, and parts of Pink.

I think its fair to say that their newest album, Dear, is going to be as good as all of the albums they had during that 5 year block.
>>
>>73916688
I prefer the drone in this one
>>
>>73917047
Have you heard it yet? It leaked, I would check the archive if you haven't

Have heard it. I said "Is going to be as good as" only because its not officially released yet. It didn't even really leak, they streamed the album in full over at NPR

>>73916414
what did you think of "Alice" from Monoliths and Dimensions. It is both monolithic and emotional. One of my favorite pieces of music actually.

If there's a drone that sound sad that must be Boris'. Them japanese can really muster up some melancholy.

but treefingers isn't even drone, it's just a short ambient interlude that fits into a larger, slightly experimental alt rock album
hell, drone metal doesn't even really qualify as drone proper
>>
>>73918072
>but treefingers isn't even drone
Yes, but it is when it's slowed down that much. Also, drone metal is drone as long as it "emphasizes the use of sustained or repeated sounds, notes, or tone-clusters – called drones"
>>
>>73918119
idk, it still doesn't change the nature of the source material, never mind the fact that any jackass with audacity can produce a "drone" song in that way
also, metal employing drones != drone; drone is much more minimal than drone metal, and drone metal also takes influence from other genres outside both metal and drone (e.g. dark ambient and noise)
>>
maybe try doomgaze? most of it is really post-rocky but it has melancholic drones
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqWuLrwfiRU
>>
>>73918337
> metal employing drones != drone; drone is much more minimal than drone metal.
would have to disagree. as long as a piece of music is primarily characterized by notes that are sustained for longer periods of time, it is drone music. doesnt matter whether it is done with guitars or electronically like Eliane Radigue or even weirder stuff like Lamonte Young.
> drone metal also takes influence from dark ambient and noise
No. Drone metal by its definition doesnt take influence from those genres. But there are bands who do drone metal combined with those genres.
>>
>>73916455

Jim O'Rourke's drone pieces have a somewhat melancholic tone to them.
