What's /mu/'s opinion on solo artists releasing music under their name vs. adopting a moniker? As a listener, which option is more likely to alienate you from listening to that artist? Whatever name an artist uses to release their music under influences us as listeners to perceive that music a certain way, so is it subjective?
For example, when I was younger I hated on artists that used their real names (Billy Joel/Idol, Bon Jovi, John Mayer, even most jazz musicians). I thought they seemed conceited especially if they played with a full band. Today it doesn't bother me since I know this method is mostly used for the sake of simplicity ("I'll just go by my name, lolduh") and conceit is not usually the artist's intent. Still, to this day listening to a song by Mac Demarco will just make me picture Mac Demarco performing, which is still a little bit of a turn-off, whereas a moniker can be more open and ambiguous and may evoke more abstract imagery.
I think Mac Demarco is a sleek name regardless, but I don't mind it in general if they don't use a moniker.
My only problem with them using their actual name is the perceived lack of credit to the backing band. When the artist has a moniker it can be assumed that the backing band is part of that moniker, but when the artist goes by their own name, the other players are kinda erased

Use your name if you are a one man band, otherwise get a cool moniker

My philosophy is that if you're not already a big name in the music industry or your music isn't gonna blow me away then don't bother using your name

tbf I think Mac DeMarco plays all the instruments himself on his albumbs. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala does this same, but has chosen not to use his own name (probably because his name is boring and generic as fuck - awesome music tho)
who fuckin care lol
Yeah if they write everything, idk. It depends on a lot more like how much the backing band contributes and if they rotate out depending on the album
I write and produce all my music myself but I still use a moniker because it turns the attention to the music itself instead of me as a person.
who cares autist kek
what matters is the tunes

It depends if the guy the band is named after writes all the music.
