so i'm recording/writing an EP right now..I have a few demos down and stuff and i'm going for a certain aesthetic.
like minimalist/highly polished new-wave, reminiscent of tears for fears early stuff, new order, depeche mode - shit like that
what i'm having a hard time figuring out is what made the genre and acts like that it's own thing?
what sets new-wave apart from regular rock/pop/etc

Just make music as whatever it is and don't worry about what aesthetic it fits in and label it as something after the fact.
If your only creative strengths lie in something that requires a consistent aesthetic then that's fine too but make what you're working towards something abstract and of your own design rather than trying to capture an already existing idea, unless said existing idea is part of your plan you're working to
