I honestly struggle to describe my taste in music to people. They just get this glassy look when I start talking. Why do they even ask?

I mean, there should be a non-autistic way to talk about any genre of music. I don't think the problem here is non-top 40 music itself, it's the attitudes with which people discuss it. Lying is always an option but shouldn't be necessary unless you've got pockets overflowing with spaghetti.
