I honestly struggle to describe my taste in music to people. They just get this glassy look when I start talking. Why do they even ask?

>glassy look
They are probably wondering why you aren't listening to Drake,J Cole of Kendrick Lamar

>Drake,J Cole of Kendrick Lamar
who?

Be vague, just stick to naming some genres you like if possible. talking about bands that they've never heard of will bore the shit out of most people
Or just lie and namedrop a couple normie artists, it doesn't matter
It's still much better than listening to radio trash only, or sticking to one single genre (like hip-hop heads and metalheads) only

Just tell them genres, and try to explain the appeal.
I listen to lots of industrial and noise shit and my friends seem to understand it when I explain to them.

this was a masterpiece by the way

Name one artist that isn't /mu/core

I mean, there should be a non-autistic way to talk about any genre of music. I don't think the problem here is non-top 40 music itself, it's the attitudes with which people discuss it. Lying is always an option but shouldn't be necessary unless you've got pockets overflowing with spaghetti.
