Why do people only ever talk about his politicl views, and not the fact that he was probably the greatest guitarist to ever live?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKYGaEafv4g
>>
he was, shit, though,
>>
Because /mu/ doesn't talk about music, /v/ doesn't talk about video games, /tv/ doesn't talk about film...
>>
People know these things already.
What people don't talk about enough is his influence on acts like Throbbing Gristle and Nurse With Wound.

>People know these things already.

I think you overestimate the knowledge of the average /mu/ poster. I've seen people here call J Mascis and Billy Corgan some of the greatest guitarists of all time.

hoo boy
this would really upset industrial kids if they found out about this
>>
>>73862503
Zappa had his hands in every kind of musical endeavor he could, no surprise that he would be wildly influential to a wide range of genres and groups. His compositions are pretty damn good and very unique in basically whatever genre he might choose on a whim

It's no secret.
Stapleton has even covered Trouble Every Day.

i mean j mascis may not be technically brilliant, but he is still a very good guitarist and is quite talented at expressing emotion using the guitar

You could certainly do worse than Dinosaur Jr.

Solo starts at 2:00

If you don't like blues rock, a lot of the Zappa stuff that gets the most attention from fans for some reason I can't understand (jk, it's because they're plebs without actual opinions based on their actual preferences) is pretty worthless. But he did a lot of interesting stuff like above. And, like above, he played some incredible improvised solos. The Inca Roads solo is a fully improvised single take lifted from a live performance and put into the studio track. Lot of creativity, varied styles, unique techniques. Good stuff.

I agree, J Mascis is probably one of the most recent examples I can point to of a "great" guitarist, along with Doug Martsch and Luc Lemay. His tone is usually excellent, guy knows his way around a pedal board.

My point was just that I really honestly don't think he's the greatest guitarist of all time and to name him as such just demonstrates a lack of knowledge.

I still stand by the fact that Corgan has little to no chops and that SP fans are really easily impressed by octave chords run through a big muff, though.

In my mind though, Zappa will always be the GOAT. Pick almost any song on Hot Rats; the guy solos for unbelievably long stretches while consistently coming up with new and interesting melodic phrases. His tone is always perfect and somehow unique and inimitable.

>J Masics is a great guitarist
>Corgan has little to no chops
>>
>>73862657
At least one of those statements is true.
>>
>>73862676
The first statement is either some kind of ridiculous bait or muh-SOULLLL to a level I've never seen outside of gearslutz and/or guitar forums where shitty players glorify sucking at the instrument. The second is objectively false. Corgan is not mega choppsy but there are plenty of live clips of him playing solos that require a level of skill most guitarists would say counts as some level of "chops".
>>
>>73862657
Show me a song with impressive Corgan guitar. Seriously. I haven't found a single one.

If you doubt J Masics' ability though, I'd just point you to this:

Because the internet has become a fucking toilet where the first replies to ANYTHING at all are complaints about sjws/nazis/liberals/alt-right.

It's become a cesspit of the passionate but stupid.

Harry Styles > Zappa
>>
>>73862716
That's a generic meandering guitar solo. I don't understand if you're trying to point out that he has some kind of emotional power, but the solo bits in that song don't demonstrate any kind of chops, and certainly not more chops than Corgan who you want to say has none.

It's not a good solo or anything but if all you're looking for is proof that he had some level of chops, there are a couple little solo bits around 4:16 and onward here. I'm not saying he's great or anything either but he can definitely has more facility, i.e. chops, than someone like J Masics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW3f2k6zb7Y
>>
>>73862852
Look, lets just agree to disagree. i think Corgan is a hack and you seem to think he's talented. I think Mascis is talented and you think he's a hack. Whatever, I think it's clear we both aren't going to change each others minds.

The point of this thread is that NIETHER of these guys should ever be listed among the greatest guitarists of all time. And the fact that i've seen both their names come up in discussion is frankly embarassing for this board. Then you have a guy like Zappa, who I honestly truly think is probably the greatest player or at least close to being the greatest player, and whenever he is brought up its about his politics. Like, this board isn't even discussing the actual MUSIC of musicians anymore, it's ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant but I was listening to some of his music today and just being blown away, then I came on here and realized no one ever talks about Zappa's skills.
>>
>>73862909
I don't come here much. Didn't know Masics and Corgan were regarded as among the greatest here. That's absolutely absurd.

I think Zappa was among the greatest in terms of being a genuine improviser in a rock context who could come up with new ideas and wasn't just recycling licks and habits. All the actual top-top guys (Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, Ted Greene, lots of acoustic players, etc.) are in goofy fusion genres that probably get shit on by this board.
>>
>>73862944
I actually just found out today that Allan Holdsworth died this year, that's fucking depressing.

I only know the guys you mentioned because of my years in guitar lessons. John Fahey is another guy I would put nominate to be among your top-top category.

But yeah, lots of people won't know the names you mentioned because /mu/ in general is album based and guys who are mostly session musicians go almost completely unrecognized unfortunately.
>>
>>73862434
I like Zappa's playing, but unlike others here I think he was relatively formulaic and recycled some ideas and licks a lot, but on the other hand that makes him very recognizable and they weren't cliches but his own signature things

here is some Zappa guitar playing on albums that are not his own:

on The Animals' Animalism
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi9_xB63y6c
on George Duke's Feel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRL-pkPL3Kg
on Grand Funk Railroad's Good Singin' Good Playin'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAGrE20R3qs

while the general sound of the music might be different form Zappa's own music, you can pretty easily tell when it's Zappa on guitar
>>
>>73862503
If it weren't for Frank Zappa, could this album even be possible?
