"I don't care who buys the record so long as they get to the Black people so I will be remembered when I die. I'm not playing for any white people, man. I wanna hear a black guy say 'Yeah, I dig Miles Davis.'"

It's always odd to find out a musician's whom's art you enjoy has some pretty negative opinions. First Morrisey then Varg and now Miles.

Barely 50 years ago the US was under literal institutionalized racism
>>73857108
so they would have been dressed as 80's glam rock instead?

For a black guy, he came from a relatively well off background. When trying to get into the music scene, his only limitation was his race. Something that he had no control of was being used to judge him instead of his talent. It pissed him off along with all the other racism at the time. I think he fought whites and got thrown out of venues for being black and whatever.

This, quotes about him wanting to choke white men or whatever were just lashing out and being provocative.
Gil Evans (a honky) was his best friend and close collaborator.

Miles was a better band leader than musician imho. He knew how to assemble an ensemble and chose players whose styles would compliment the other members and compensate for any perceived shortcomings that might come up.
