The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Hello /daily/, I remember posting in a couple of these threads a long time ago (around the end of 2015 probably), but I never really got into the spirit of it, so I'm here to try again.

Is it recommended to use a trip/name for these threads?

pic is my current plan for listening.

Good-evening /daily/, how are you all? Tried the following after getting caught up in new releases;

>Broken Social Scene - Hug of Thunder. Far more explosive in nature than their previous material though suffers perhaps as a side effect of that, certainly feels somewhat more formulaic in approach given the near continuous verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge etc. used on a lot of the tracks, still the production is at its best here and tracks like Protest Song and the opening to Mouth Guards of the Apocalypse bring more relaxed moments to a generally pulsating baroque pop album, honourable mention to Vanity Pail Kids, love that song.
>King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Murder Of The Universe. Really enjoyed the prog-styled guitar riffs on this album, don't get the hate for the spoken word which aside from the robot voice I quite enjoyed, gave it an LOTR sorta narration which added to the claustrophobic atmosphere. Disc two was certainly the best of the discs by far and The Lord of Lightning the best song, the series of Altered Beast tracks were also great in there own right though the last disc held it back in my view, can't help but love the Australian accent on this.
>Vince Staples - Summertime '06. Really enjoyed disc 2, certainly preferred the album as a whole compared to Big Fish Theory, especially the more dissonant tracks such as 3230 and Like It Is, certainly have more respect for him now, wasn't particularly fond of disc 1 however and Senorita was pretty miss for me.

Really having a hard time debating which Kyuss album is my favourite, its not often I enjoy a stoner rock band. Going to try Rated R & Songs for the Deaf later today, that'll be interesting. Oh and Lick Doo sucks. Yes this was reposed since the other thread died immediately.

New Japanese Breakfast was alright. First half is pretty strong and unremarkable dream pop/rock. There's some questionable autotune on Machinist. Till Death, Boyish, and Road Head are great tracks.

New Washed Out is a departure from his older material. The track listing is sorta broken up, and there's some spoken recordings that sounds like they should have been from Tame Impala. It's not as smooth as Paracosm, a bit sharper with House beats. Pretty flat, in all respects.

Update on the mixtape tournament

noveltycondom made me a cozy mix of static-y old jazz, beach sounds, and the good part from that live coil album. great job!!!

flyingicewizard made me a mix of edgy music including blackhouse, grim, oxbow, and wolf eyes. v fashionable and good, never heard of blackhouse but that 19 minute song was good and didn't feel that long. nice work!!

SDC came through with a g-funk mix, which was very well compiled and introduced me to a genre i'd overlooked. not my favorite thing, but it's really great. plus, it appeals to my Texan sensibilities with the track "Straight Texas Hoodlum". awesome mix!!

jimmy jazz brought in a straight up mix, featuring sade, flotation toy warning, and bardo pond. I don't know what to make of the travis scott song. good job jimmy, I enjoyed it a lot!

s brought in a black metal mix with a bunch of stuff i've never heard of and it was really great. the cover art was possibly the best so far, and gets bonus points for the cassette art format.

S and Flying Ice Wizard advance! stay posted guys, when round 1 is done I will come up with your round 2 restrictions.

post-feelist, I need a tape from you

Boris - Heavy Rocks (Orange)
More Kyuss than Earth. Boris tones down their experimental streak and makes an enjoyable stoner rock album with several featured artists I’ve never heard of.
3.0+

The Avalanches - Wildflower
Did you ever want to hear SILY but with less charm and a featured rapper/singer every other track? They get some good ones on here, but neither Danny Brown or MF DOOM on lead single “Frankie Sinatra” (among other featured artists) seem at home on The Avalanches’ turntablist vintage sample based beats, in fact, Danny Brown sounded better as an Insane Clown Posse feature. Anyway as for the actually music itself, it’s a bit more repetitive than many parts of SILY, and consistently less layered, not very many horses this time around. Use of more well known samples kinda cheapens the atmosphere of the album. On paper, the album should be as good or even better than SILY, but somewhere in the execution when they were choosing samples, features, and putting synth work and production over those things it lost the “magic.”
The Avalanches still cobble together an upbeat plunderphonics record but it comes nowhere near SILY.
2.5+

Giles Corey - s/t
One of the most overtly nihilistic and suicidal albums I’ve ever heard. Dan Barrett returns with a mostly acoustic project much less ambitious than Deathconsciousness. Most songs are played on acoustic guitar with accompaniment from Barrett and co on the harmonizing vocals drenched with reverb. Still featuring very minimal percussion and a healthy amount of droning organ and other instruments too warped to identify clearly. It’s not quite as engaging and varied as Deathconsciousness, but it’s a good album for what it tries to do.
3.5+

Sigur ros - agaetis byrjun
This is a cool album.
3.5+

Popul Vuh - Hosianna Mantra
This is good.
4.0

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
This is good too.

>Hoahio - Ohayo Hoahio
>Art Pop/Experimental

Unassuming chamber pop with Koto (Yagi Michiyo's work) and other acoustic strings, some synths, and Sachiko M doing her thing in between tracks. Haco's voice is relatively nice, and I was happy to see John Zorn having produced this.

I suppose the main pull is how Haco seems to drift between Sachiko and Michiyo's instruments on a spacious stage. Jellyfish and Happy Mail are the best of the pop, and Sea Wall III is a fluffy breakdown of all 3 musicians doing their thing.

Doesn't leave as much as an impression as I hoped it would.

5/10

>Julius Eastman - Unjust Malaise
>Modern Classical, Minimalism

Stay On It isn't attempting to progress the melody, it's trying to... stay on it. The ensemble's vibraphone, marimba, and strings eventually break away from the first movement's riff. I can't tell if the performers are intentionally fucking up about 5 minutes into the song.

If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?, an introductory trumpet climbs up chromatically. The ensemble bastes in brass drones, and once again attacks the chromatic scale, each instrument attempting to go as high as possible. The chimes summon imagery of a maddened event like The French Revolution alongside the heavy horn blasts, and eventually a very violin joins the turmoil.

Prelude To The Holy Presence Of Joan D'Arc (1981) and its followup are excellent examples of maximal minimalism. The jump between the two is jarring in a good way.

Gay Guerrilla comes off as a disturbed Philip Glass using only pianos, and is the most accessible and thrilling composition. What begins as heavy atonal chords, turns into heart-wrenching single note strikes.

A conductor occasionally corrals more pianos in the final track, as they restlessly wander into light-adorned halls and hidden passageways.

A shame that a brave composer such as Eastman wouldn't see to produce more.

Momus - The Little Red Songbook (1998)
>synthpop, baroque pop

Like a vulgar early-era Magnetic Fields album, but a whole lot better than that sounds. Merritt's lyrical wit is what really drives me to the Magnetic Fields, and that's definitely lost here, but Momus has an innate ability to write absolutely ridiculous, plain stupid lines and deliver them absolutely perfectly. Above anything else, this album is /funny/. Funny in a really childish way, but it got quite a few giggles out of me simply because of how little it cares about how stupid and vulgar it is. It goes all in and it's all the better for it. Musically, the very simple sound is really pleasing, even though the songs and melodies can get stale, and the karaoke version that make up the album's last twenty minutes are completely pointless. Primitive, scratchy synths play along with baroque-era harpsichord and create something weird but ultimately oddly pleasing, especially in contrast with the vulgar lyrics. Didn't expect much from this, but I'm a fan.

>This Heat - This Heat
>Experimental Rock

The fuck is going on here. This album's nuts

I was shocked to see this was released in 1979, honest. This felt MODERN, and I'm not just saying "ahead of its time."

The creativity of their songwriting for the time is great, and the transition between tracks makes it all the better. Drone, jazz, industrial, and rock all comfortably settle in this album. And the smooth mesh of tapes, drums, wind instruments, and guitars were all on point. Normally, I find enjoyment from a lot of instruments being used in albums, but The Heat takes a moderate amount and works the shit out of them into some really sick grooves.

Tracks like Twilight Furniture gleam under incandescent lights, with tribal drumming and guitar shots. 24 Track Loop is heavily electronic, and STILL manages to bang. Horizontal Hold makes excellent usage of silence between the group's freakouts, and a guitar I swear I'd heard from Glenn Branca. Diet of Worms pulls straight from the Japanese EAI scene. Music Like Escaping Gas perfectly delivers on its namesake. Rainforest knocks my fucking socks off and The Fall of Saigon

There's a lot of similarities between this and many electronic genres. And yet, rock has never felt more alive for 1979.

Can't wait for Deceit.

Thanks man, trying to broaden my horizons a bit

Moving along slowly, but so far I've managed to listen to
>The Gun Club - Miami
It's a very solid 2nd album, though it seems to fall into the same sophomoric rock album trope of the band trying to "mature" their sound with a darker, more restrained tone (see: The Doors, 13th Floor Elevators, Pink Floyd). Despite that, the band is explorative enough to not feel as though they're just retreading rock conventions.

Exceptional tracks: Watermelon Man, Run Through the Jungle

I'm trying to use a much more general scoring system for albums right now, since I don't really want to concern myself with ranking albums against eachother as I go (especially across genres). For now I'm sticking with what's basically a 5 point scale (++, +, /, -, --) but hopefully the signifiers are different enough to not feel absolute.

I dig this but it is a little bit lacking in the abrasive department. I'd expect a third-stream band to be tearing shit down. Still, it sounds very well-orchestrated and I'm sure that some of you would really like it. I think it pushes onto minimalism a lot too, which is a plus.

Looks kinda grey to me familia

Anyways, it's very good. I loved how the riffs were meticulously wrought, while still giving of an aleatory feeling. On top of that, the way that some of the vocals are introduced in a few songs are spellbinding. The ending is fantastic as well. Overall, it's a great exercise in existential angst.

The slower parts felt a little less inspired, but this is coming from a spoiled Slint fan.

Also I just found out that the title roughly translates into "The Worst 7 km Of My Life". Fitting.

Jay-Z - The Blueprint (2001)
>east coast hip hop

Not terrible, but I really don't get the acclaim. Jay-Z is technically a very gifted rapper, but when he's not offputtingly cocky, he's totally faceless, his personality is nearly non-existent. He's such a non-memorable rapper that when Eminem comes in on the admittedly great "Renegade" it's a breath of fresh air because at least Eminem has an interesting personality. Kanye's beats are all solid, but they're not his best work, and all the other production work is pretty average at best (save for Eminem, who shockingly turns in an amazing beat with the aforementioned "Renegade"). Not bad at all, I just don't really see it as the acclaimed masterpiece it's so often touted as.

Pep Llopis - Poiemusia. La nau dels argonautes (1987)
>post-minimalism, new age

Among the best minimalism I've ever heard paired with some more iffy new age. The new age is pretty and all, but it's detrimentally simple and one-note. Reminds me a bit of Hiroshi Yoshimura's stuff, pretty and breezy but ultimately stagant and uninteresting. The minimalism here, on the other hand, is absolutely incredible. Every piece shift and moves perfectly, without a single dull moment, and everything is put together exceptionally well. Thanks for the rec, Accel!

Bad opinion incoming, especially because I didn't pay any attention to the lyrics. Also I didn't read the book, maybe I'll do it when I'm bored.

>Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
I'm a little conflicted. The 2 discs sound very different to me, and I enjoyed disc 1 a lot more than disc 2. I just really didn't like the more uptempo punk style songs (in other words Waiting for Black Metal Records to Come in the Mail and Deep, Deep). They stick out like a sore thumb to me, especially directly after a full disc of much slower, more atmospheric songs. Deep, Deep in particular is probably the worst song imo, the cheesy synths really kill it for me. I wouldn't say that they ruin the whole thing for me, but they certainly affect my enjoyment.
3.5

>Have A Nice Life - Voids
The demos are completely unecessary, especially since they were already released on their own previously. The B-sides are surprisingly good though, even the punk style songs are okay. My favorites are I'm Doctor House and Sisyphus, the former doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of the songs, but it sounds like slowcore to me and I'm a big slowcore nerd.

So I listened to Queens of the Stone Age for the first time yesterday, listened to it a few more times since;

>Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf. This has been a very interesting listen, did not realize that it is a concept album based around a rather long drive, hence the skits which I personally was not big on though appreciated for the mood. No One Knows surprised me, used to hear that song all the time in my childhood and always thought that it was the Arctic Monkeys for some reason. Loved Song for the Death, First It Giveth and Six Shooter even if it reminded me of Big Man With A Gun albeit far more polished and listenable.

Flotation Toy Warning - Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck
[2004]

This gets my neo-psychedelia fetish kicking. Some songs are outright brilliant, take for example Popstar Reaching Oblivion and Losing Carolina; for Drusky (which has an unexpected vocal change into opera singing midtrack), but it could've been better if like two of the songs were cut off. Still, this has enough content to blow my mind for a good while.

>John Coltrane - Coltrane "Live" at the Village Vanguard (1962)

It took me long enough to get to this one. Opener, "Spiritual", is about the best I've ever heard this band live, and it's absolutely essential. There's this mood that permeates here so well--it sounds like as if it predicts A Love Supreme material from a few years later--and I've always thought the hallmark of a great jam is the feeling that it could keep going on an on unimpeded, which is certainly the case here. The title is apt, as it carries this mystical quality in how it rolls along; to borrow another reviewer's analogy, it's like floating down the Nile. Like others mention, Eric Dolphy "sits in" here, which really just means he solos on the clarinet every once in a while, but those are always key moments, which isn't to discredit perhaps the most perfect line-up of musicians of all time. The spell is broken ever so slightly with the more down-to-earth atmosphere of the following two tracks, and like others point out, the exclusion of "India" is painful, as it is perhaps the highlight of these sessions. I anticipate spending a lot more time with this album.
8/10
>>
>>73847727
>Various Artists - Mono no aware (2017)

This is a case of "what do I know?" I'm not an ambient expert and I tend to only dig the essentials anyway. My loose constitution of ideal ambient music is the portrayal of an atmosphere in a convincing way, which ranges from almost nothing, like on Eno's Ambient album series, to the impossibly layered wall of noise that Tim Hecker creates in his best works. The songs on this album tend to be on the minimal side, with some almost entirely composed of field recordings. It's a neat effect at times, but too many songs hinge on how tolerable you find the single (or so) tone used on a given track. The premise of the album is a compilation of amateur ambient musicians, and it shows quite a bit, for better or worse. In short, I just don't find much of it particularly compelling or convincing.

OH YO BOYS

I'm looking for some field recordings of wild wind howling or stuff that sounds like that. can't find anything that isn't using a minimal approach to the theme.

For some reason I've never listened to Kate Bush. I feel like I really ought to have heard at least something, so I downloaded Hounds of Love, seemed like the most popular album. Started listening and the first track isn't bad, so I'm hopeful.

this is exactly why I'm asking,
yesterday I listened to a part of his
Saying I love you, I continue to curse myself
and then suddenly it came evident how bizarre his playing was. Like a wind it filled every bit of space just then some minor voices started coming out of the mist,

that's why I wanted to hear how a real hurricane sounds in order to analyze better his approach to aurality

here I go making a fool of myself (not like I haven't done it before)
John Fahey - The Dance of Death And Other Plantation Favorites
Four very good pieces and seven pretty good ones. John Fahey's feces would be pleasing morning wood material for all of /dailys/ dumb rym bastard sons.
"American Primitive Guitar" was a marketing gimmick from a man who was Arrogant, repetitive, and never got to be a rock star.
I give it a light 4.0 or strong 3.5 some parts go slow and light others fast and headstrong not unlike a sonata for piano or perhaps beating blast black metal blues from tack piano rock singers who can only write ballads and never any zingers.
Michael Jackson type of pallid with slide guitar technique to make invalids look valid. I wipe my ass with Jim O'Rourke, his songs are for people who hold up sporks. Except not as fast as for instance Mike Patton,
whose shite patterned pipes would make me rather liken to some shitty bleeps like jungle rather than awful albums like his California by Mr. Bungle. The difference between Mr Bungle, Papa Roach, and Ween?
One is for avant-teens, the other for day tripper fungal sniffers, and the final for plebs whomst I reproach. I got sexts and the best you can do is quints, I'm like Hancock's 12th studio, extant, and excellent, you're like the artist formerly known as prince, guanaco.

anyway
Old Time Relijun - Witchcraft Rebellion
>Noise Rock, Blues Rock, Experimental Rock, Punk Jazz, Lo Fi
If you want a more modern take on the ideas of Captain Beefheart, listen to this. Full of overblown, noisy, and squeaky saxophone solos and awkwardly phrased, mathy pentatonic blues guitar parts. It's an interesting album but it does pretty much just retread Beefheart's ground.
This band's drummer is Phil Elverum from the Microphones/Mt. Eerie

mediocre round desu
i didnt really fw eldrige skell, sorry trip. i just didnt enjoy it that much.
les sculpteurs was pretty cool, love some good yoshihide turntable shit
tuxedomoon didnt impress me that much. it was enjoyable, but nothing stood out that much
kod-915913 was nice, good atmosphere, might listen again at night.

denji vs borzoi was a really close call
i loved the variety of emotions and feelings on guitar, but at the same time, it felt a bit inconsistent and just like it was missing something. still, really liked it a lot.
watering a flower may be youtubecore, but damn if it wasnt super nice youtubecore. really cozy and great ambient.
i didnt think i would like shit computer at all, but i guess i enjoyed it after all. dont rec me something like it again tho, pls.
louis philippe was a miss for me, it was certainly nice, but didnt stand out amongst lots of other chamber and art pop albums i could be listening to instead

comet, stick, borzoi, anbro. yr recs, please.
