Hip-Hop head here. I literally only listen to hip-hop, and I want to branch out. I feel like I've explored, and thoroughly enjoy, every subgenre of hip-hop. I listen to everything from 80s boom bap, to 90s gangsta rap, chopped and screwed, conscious hip-hop, cloud rap, and even modern trap and mumble rap like pic related. It's the only genre I've ever been able to connect to, but recently I've been looking to get into another genre. Maybe rock? I don't know anything about it though, and I've never really cared enough about guitar music to give it a chance. Everything I've heard sounded the same. It didn't seem to match the variety and diversity of hip-hop. Can somebody recommend me some rock? The closest thing I listen to is Death Grips, but they're more metal/punk than rock. Where should I begin with guitar music?

Which song should I start with?

Kill yourself. You're a lost cause.

Sister Ray. Then you can stop with all rock music because you have heard the peak of it

This.
>>
Just wait for the next non-hip hop flavor of the month album to come out and listen to that.
>>
>>73820022
Holy shit, its like 17 minutes. You expect me to sit through that? Is this a meme?
>>
You're probably too far gone. I have a couple friends who only listen to hip hop and it's like they can't branch out. I think the common simplicity of the genre stops people from enjoying more complex music that isn't 2 measures repeated ad nauseum with a chorus.
>>
>>73820068
Ok you are a lost cause. Only listening to hip hop is fine for someone like you i think

>>73820091
I'm serious. Is that supposed to be a joke song that you recommend to somebody and you all pretend to like? The longest song I've ever sat through was an 11 minute Odd Future track, back when Oldie came out.
>>
Nigga just listen to pitchfork approved hipster shit like Frank Ocean and Paramore and Sampha
>>
>>73820136
I unironically concider Sister Ray to be the peak of rock music yes. It is generally highly regarded when it comes to rock music among influential critics as well

Also in the wiki link in the sticky you can find a bunch of essentials charts featuring popular albums from a bunch of different genres meant as a gateway into new genres for people like you. You should give that a go
>>
Listen to this. This album pretty much killed rock music.
>>
Why not something like jazz, and the funk that was being put out in the daily in the 80's and prime of fusion jazz. A lot of elements of jazz were incorporated into hip-hop a good start could be this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m3qOD-hhrQ

Good place to start if any.
>>
>>73820136
if you want real advice on how to expand your taste, just 'lurk' here. look at what people are saying and talking about but dont post. if an album cover looks interesting try the most popular song on it. if someone says something about an artist/song/album, try them out, but sont come here expecting a nice community to support you, im the nicest you'll get and even i think you are a clueless dumbass
>>
>>73820203
seconding
>>
>>73820239
I can get into this. I don't know if I could sit down and listen to the full album and give it the same attention I give to hip-hop, though. I generally don't like instrumental music unless it acts as background music while I'm working or something. This is chill af though. More like this? Maybe with some vocals?
>>
>>73820069
that makes zero sense too me. hip hop is sampled based. if you enjoy the beat. most likely you'll enjoy the original song they sampled
i grew up listening to mostly hip hop and cross over just by finding out original samples and listening to that artist and genre

>>73819925
oh makes sense that most rapposters here are complete newfags

Jesus fucking Christ, we need to ban rap. You kids are destroying this board.

Building off this, I'd recommend jazz guitar as well. Here's some tracks by Grant Green:

Not him, Sister Ray is serious rock music and is considered by a lot of people to be the single greatest rock song of all time. A good portion of it is improvised and played in a very repetitive manner, loudly. Lou Reed (the frontman/vocalist/talentless hack/rhythm guitarist of The Velvet Underground) goes on a nearly stream of consciousness lyrical rant about degeneracy in society, drug use, orgies, and murder.

anyway here is a variety of songs

Does it really matter how long one individual song is. I mean, if you can sit through a 50 minute album (I hope you can) then 17 minutes shouldn't be hard at all

Don't listen to anything, instead form your own band and try to imagine what you would want guitar music to sound like.

This is a fucking joke and the only people who say this opinion unironically are just mindlessly droning Scaruffi.

Sister Ray is a cheeky art gesture and nothing more. Those who think it's some transcendental masterpiece have tin fucking ears

Yep.
VU&N was the album that finally made me stop listening to rap when I was 17. I now only listen to a rap album when something new and shilled on /mu/ comes out so I can say I listened to it and then go back to listening to better stuff.
>>
I'd say start with Bowie. Specifically Ziggy Stardust

It's essentially where I started, and I also introduced a lot of typically hip hop listeners to rock by showing them the album

8/10 bait. So many are hook line and sinker.
