OK this is good. I said post-92 because Wish is a personal favorite album of mine, and I thought that it would be could to still have Friday I'm In Love for the mainstream angle.

But you're absolutely right, the mainstream gimmick isn't necessary, and if it was 89 then it would be far enough away from Cobain.

He suffered from depression, but not as severe as Curtis or Cobain. He also had a good support group in Mary and other friends. Cobain and Curtis didn't have very good support which allowed for their inevitable suicide. I think Trent Reznor has talked about how important a support group is, even for a famous musician. Anyways, Robert Smith was depressed, but he was able to go against and I think he had a romanticized view of dark things like the whole Goth subculture does. There are stories that he even cried between vocal takes at the studio (While recording disintegration, I think).

I really don't like the whole romanticizing death thing. Sure most of The Cure's music lately isn't as good as their 79-92 era, but Robert's a nice guy who deserves to have a long life, and Bloodflowers was pretty great.
