Gibson or Fender /gg/?
>>
The last thread was awesome. It looks like there are plenty of decent guitar players on /mu/, who typically are lurkers. It seems the most vocal, opinionated, and arrogant poster, I.E crazyfaga, is a gross misrepresentation of the true skill that lurks this board....
>>
>>73798326
As far as solid bodies go I prefer Fender but the 335 is obviously superior to the Starcaster and Coronado. When it comes to dual humbucker guitars and guitars and other guitars suited for high gain playing I actually prefer PRS over Gibson but I'm too poor for either.

Are Jackson die cast locking tuners actually a locking tuner? Just bought a used one that had them and apparently they are normal tuners, and even looking online at headstock shots, just normal ones, not locking

Ya we need to do more of those battle things and have people give constructive feedback. It is interesting to hear everyone's styles and I also enjoy getting different opinions on my playing if it's valid feedback and not just stupid snarky shitposting from someone who doesnt contribute anything.

If there's any tech death bros still around, have a listen to this. The drums are just made up on a drum machine and guitars aren't edited at all. It's just a quick little sample so I can hear what I have so far and figure out where I want to go with it. Idk where to go after the solo at the end. Yes I know the solo is sloppy, I just made it up on the spot and recorded it all in one take without practicing much. Any ideas?

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0qy0aYM1btj

I also have some more tech death riffs to contribute if anyone wants but none of them are recorded right now.

This is how nitro maple boards go when played frequently. The finish wears off leaving the bare wood exposed.

I prefer it to a glossy maple fingerboard!
>>
>>73798670
Some of Epiphone's hollow and semi-hollows are actually legit good guitars and not budget Gibson. With Squier even if some of their guitars are decent for the price (Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified) they're still budget Fender.

Epiphone's solid bodies are always shit.
>>
>>73798710
>>73798772
thanks a lot guys. I'm not sure I want to go back to the verse after the solo, I'd like to have a middle part with some really heavy riffs and then go back to the verse, or not go back the verse at all and have the 2nd half of the song be totally different than the 1st. Idk. Appreciate the feedback though. Feel free to share some of your ideas too.
>>
>>73798810
>nitro
well there's your fucking problem
>>
>>73798595

Depends on the Gibson for me.

So many of them are just peices of shit, wheras generally any Fender is at the very least an okay guitar. Vintage (like thru to mid 60s) Gibsons are amazing if they don't have any issues, but it's less than a 20% hit rate on decent ones these days.

The one in that pic is absolutely flawless, which is the reason I bought it.

could we make a logical progression of what you should absolutely know before going to the next step in theory.

something like:

1)staff basics
2)name of the notes
3)intervals
4)circle of fifths
etc...

it would be interesting to make official mu guides with the collaboration of all and start condensing them into archives

Fuck that m8 keep it six string. Learn to make heavy sounds. Its what i like to do. Try some fast muted riffs with a lot of power chords near the nut.
>>
>>73799375
You don't necessarily need to tune down to get heavy. Inverted powerchords will get you there, especially when you have a bass to beef it up

>>73799417
>>73799428
It's all about contrast really. And you can just say fourths instead of "inverted power chords" really.
I've heard one of the tricks is to have the bass play the fifth below instead of the octave below so that it basically makes "a huge power chord" but I haven't tried to see if that is true.

But yeah fourths are great.

Technically the bass defines it. If it's playing the lower note it's a fourth, if it's playing the higher note it's an inverted powerchord

Beginnerfag here
How the fuck do I place my right hand?
I play on a Strat
Over the bridge? Wrist on the bridge? On the strings?
This is really bugging me because I can't get it right.
I saw a tutorial from Justin Guitar saying to use my hand to mute strings when doing bends, but then saw this other guy telling me to rest my hand on the bridge for picking
Then I see people like slash and I don't know where they put their hands.

Also, is there a way to get a louder hammer on and pull off? Mine are really weak (specially when trying to tap) is it my fingers? should I hit the fret harder?
>>
>>73803752
Sort of this>>73803826
You've got to really have it in you. But I also think just listening to and appreciating a lot of music helps if you want to be more creative. Personally when I improvise it's like I just have a melody in my head and transfer that to the guitar. Playing from your head and not your hands, if you know what i mean lol

Whatever is more comfortable really. It's a good habit to learn to pick with your hand fully floating for jazz and fast leads but if you're just playing rock it doesn't matter much since you will want to get used to palm muting and what not.

On my 52th birthday party my mom said something snide about my bullet belt. Then later I got drunk on Bud Light limearitas and fell alseep with my corpse paint on, absolutely ruining my new 600-thread count sheets.

That day I looked myself in the mirror and said, "well old boy, it's time to move on." I got a job that day, and my dad told me he loved me for the first time. We went out fishing that afternoon and he patted me on the back even though the fish I caught were pretty small.

One year later and here I am, married to a gorgeous girl, 3 kids, and I'm about to make partner at my firm. Metal got me through some tough times, but now I'm passing the torch to the younger crowd. Hell, I'm getting close to retirement age these day.

I'm a parrothead now. Just gimme some white sand and cool tunes with my old lady singing "If you like pina coladas.... getting caught in the rain...." haha! We've been through a lot but she's been a good woman to me.

God bless, ya'll

How do G&L guitars compare to Fender guitars, specifically MIA? I'm leaning towards a G&L after clicking around on the internet.
But how would I go about buying a G&L? I can't find much information. There's an ASAT Classic for $350 but there's another Classic that's $1250, both used on GC. Then there are some that are $700. I'm not trying to troll, but is there a big enough difference to make hardware worth it if I'm just mashing everything together myself?

What are the best strings for a parlor guitar? I'm using 0.11 but I want more bass, so is it safe to put thicker strings on parlors?
>>
>>73815501
Depending of your pickups but plug directly into your computer's line in. Setup ASIO4ALL drivers. Install favourite DAW, I use Reaper but you might use something else. Install Amplitube for example. It takes a while to get everything working properly but that's it. When you record or enable audio monitoring, make sure the line in is not clipping. You should be good to go. Also use good monitor headphones.

It's perfectly good for home use and small recording stuff. You don't need any more highend stuff than that.
>>
>>73815585
But if you plan to make semi-professional projects or something else, then you will need more robust configuration. But for beginner bedroom guitarist, you don't need anything else if you play home.
>>
>>73815501
So depending of your needs but for doing stuff at home you don't need an amplifier when you plug your guitar into your computer. That's the beauty of technology. Only thing what might be an issue is that if your pickups are not strong enough you might need amplification before going to computer but.

This is good example what you need to do.

BTW, any idea when guitar.com when return? It looks like the webmaster allowed the domain to expire. And with it the rig setups for hundreds of musicians.

You mean hundreds of painfully inaccurate depictions of your favorite musicians guitar setups?

Yeah, good riddance.

Looking for a tuner pedal so I check the local shop. They have the Poly for around $130 (CAD). Do some backtracing on the Internet and find that Poly3 is already out for the same price.

Any recommendations for a free/piratable source to learn music theory [specifically with guitar for example purposes] that explains things as simply impossible instead of masturbatory jargon of little to no relevance only serving to inflate the author's ego
>>
Hello, since i was a kid i was interested in heavy metal but didnt play anything, then i started playing and got interested in blues, doom metal and psych rock.

I always had the existential doubt if this was because playing heavy metal is too hard and technical or my tastes really changed.

It's like, everyone has prepared explanation about how their ugly fat titles older girlfriend is the best. But who wouldn't like to screw a hot slim athletic big boobed 18 year old?

Does anyone have the same insecurity as me about falling for a genre just because its easy but not the one you really liked?

Was a sincere question, not thinly-veiled bitching. Made attempts to learn before many times but guides tend to poorly explain things or fail to translate concepts to playing

literally everywhere on the internet. The trickiest part always is just to use a right progression on knowing something correctly before moving on to more advanced concepts.

But if you truly want an ellaborated book just torrent something by berkeley or any other famous music school.

Also:
>that explains things as simply impossible
How can you ask the impossible from a guide.

>Made attempts to learn before many times but guides tend to poorly explain things or fail to translate concepts to playing

Music theory is really really simple, it's a lot of information but none of the concepts are hard like quantum rocket surgery. Don't pin on others your own learning disabilities or you will never progress.

If all else fails just go to a teacher

same dude from yesterday, with more questions
Now, I wanna learn Man in the Box by Alice in chains, I have to alternate between paml muting and strumming the firt part, then a little riff comes in after the strum, my hand is let loose in the air and that just feels wrong.
What am I doing wrong?

>inb4 Get shit on me for AiC
>>
>>73818056
Just in case, it's about alternating between palm muting and picking.
>>
>>73818051
Well I found PDFs from Berklee, not Berkeley. I'm not trying to blame others, but rather just a hand-holdy method. Have a teacher, isn't too helpful with this so I'm just using him for more mechanical things right now
>>
>>73818086
But rather find a hand-holdy guide. Holy fuck I need sleep. What I find to be the issue is I learn by repeating exercises/testing myself over and over however I'm not really sure how to do that with theory
>>
>>73818111
>What I find to be the issue is I learn by repeating exercises/testing myself over and over however I'm not really sure how to do that with theory

Theres lot of theory excersises, but it depends on where youre at

for example if you dont know the notes, draw an empty fretboards and add in the notes randomly.

Learn the notes backwards and fowards repeat them.

Learn the intervals

learn the circle of fifths...

etc..

there are also some theory HABITS that you should incorporate, for example, every time you play a song knowing the root and scales used, every time you play a chord for think what components it has, what inversions, practice scales sing all notes, etc...

sup guys can you notice any off timing on this, especially on the fast strums

So someone gave me a set of Seymour Duncan Gus G pickups and the polepieces are rusted as shit, so I'm trying to figure out how to clean it. The rest of the pickups are fine, just the polepiece tips, so would I be able to suspend it facefirst into a dish of vinegar for remove the rust? My concern is just if the top of the bobbins might be affected by the vinegar
>>
>>73818799
>My concern is just if the top of the bobbins might be affected by the vinegar
dont know if it can be affected but i'm sure the tone isnt affected by the rustings
>>
>>73818697
No, not really.
>>
>>73818820
great then, thanks
>>
>>73817836
Not really. You practice what you like and what is closest to your heart. If you are too lazy to practice you don't really want to play after all. You don't care about playing guitar properly if you say you don't want to practice properly.

There are two kinds of people in this world - those who talk and those who do.

It's the same thing with everything else in this world. If you go to gym and expect results in 3 months you are going to get disappointed. Things take time and those who persevere are going to get the first prize. Those who complain and quit... well they suck and always going to suck because they don't spend any effort.
>>
/gg/ is dieing, i wonder who is killing it
>>
>>73818813
Yeah I'm aware soundwise they'll be fine, but I guess the original owner wasn't kind to them cause they scratched off most of the funky printing the Gus G's come with so I was going to acetone wipe off all the printing. The polepieces are just an eyesore, and not in some relic-type of way either.
>>
>>73818779
>How is psych rock not hard?
not hard like heavy metal
>>
>>73818874
take your eyes off then so they dont get "sore" as you say
>>
>>73818865
What I mean that I found playing bendy bluesy shit very easy as well and that's kind of my default playing - you can compare it to scribbling doodles while talking to phone. It comes kind of automatically.

But if you want to progress you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone until what was painful becomes your next comfort level.

whenever i hear this kind of speech i think its people who have shitty lives having to justify themselves

i enjoy practicing, it is a fun time. lel at people who have to force themselves to do things

also im not the one you replied to
>>
>>73818906
the only thing making metal hard are the fast tempos
>>
>>73818906
Well they both, are based on pentatonic blues and rock scale. Depending what you play can be hard regardless of music style. It's dumb to say "metal is hardest" because it's not hard after you know how to pick right sound and when you can pick 16th notes @ 180 bpm and do melodies in that kind of tempo. You can do the same in every kind of musical genre.

But this said, imho, it's very good to learn how to play metal because it's not as relaxed to play as some other types of music. You can build endurance and other technical skills a lot by practicing some metal type of stuff.
>>
>>73818949
You don't understand my point at all. I'm not justifying anything. You are now being obnoxious little cunt. Shove your Gibson up your ass.
