because not everyone is retarded

It's not. It is a good album, though.
>>73710250
because not everyone listens to grimes

Because it is
The reason people consider it as such is because the album, by virtue of its content and portrayal, has a high tendency to create a strong emotional connection in those that favor it musically, on top of the basic affection for the kind of music you like.

no one said that. its considered the most recommended indi-folk album according to /mu/ and used as a ground biases when comparing to other great works of that style.

that's the biggest misunderstanding about that album, OP. Though it's included in every essential chart, it's implied that it is the best, but this is not the case.
What is notable about this album, however, is how truly divisive it is. There are a lot of projects that have stirred controversy, but nothing quite like ITAOTS. One truly either loves it or hates it, and I think that's what propels it to the forefront of our collective consciousness.
It provokes an intense emotional response from the listener, either of pure bliss & joy or confusion & hate.
And sure, I know some of you are quick to respond that you're indifferent to it, that you don't react in any capacity. But it's that strong desire to proclaim your emotional response to the album (apathetic or not) that justifies my argument even further.
tldr it's controversial enough to warrant being /mu/'s mascot
