>Following the mammoth success of their 1977 tour, Kiss took a break from touring for 1978, but each member also released a solo album. For 1979, the band had a new album out, Dynasty, and planned for a tour that would be their most expensive and ambitious yet. Costumes and stage props became ever more elaborate, and included many special effects and stunts cancelled due to cost, safety concerns, or technical unfeasibilty. The most infamous was probably a laser-shooting eyepiece that Paul Stanley would wear; after a few trial runs, him and manager Bill Aucoin agreed that it was dangerous to both himself and the audience. Other planned and cancelled effects included glowing light saber-esque drumsticks, each costing $6000.

>However, the 1979 tour bode an ill omen for Kiss's continued fortunes when many concerts had half-empty venues or were cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. According to Paul Stanley, "It wasn't a good thing. We were playing two, sometimes three nights in one town during the '77 tour, here we were facing half-empty venues." Part of the problem was simple burnout and overexposure of the band, another was the increasingly pop-oriented direction the new album took, the highlight being the disco number "I Was Made For Loving You", which became a major hit single, but upset the core rock audience who wanted more songs like Black Diamond and Strutter. In addition, Kiss's fanbase became increasingly heavy on elementary school aged children accompanied by parents.

>And most importantly, growing tensions with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss due to their displeasure with the band's more poppy direction and substance abuse problems. Criss also broke his wrists in a car accident, which resulted in a permanent decline in his playing skills, he in fact did not play on most of Dynasty, the drumming being done by session musician Anton Fig. Gene Simmons's contributions to Dynasty were also thin, with just two tracks featuring him on lead vocals.
>>
>During 1979, Kiss also faced stiff competition in the rock market as Van Halen, AC/DC, and Judas Priest's popularity blew up. However, although the band may have become overexposed in the US, their fanbase in Europe and South America was quickly growing with Dynasty and the followup Unmasked.

>"I Was Made For Loving You" was the primary legacy of Dynasty, none of the other songs from the album were played live after the 1979 tour. According to Paul Stanley, "I was sitting listening to the radio one evening and all I hear are these 126 bpm disco songs, so I thought 'Big deal, I can write one of these.' He set a drum machine to 126 bpm and sat down to write the lyrics for the song.

Kiss is a band that was a sellout band from its inception
it is THE money-oriented, soulless stadium-oriented cash grab, the ultimate expression of the sort of bands that killed rock music
