Squire Vintage Modified is actually pretty decent and shoegaze doesn't need to be made with a JM or Jag. When I saw Slowdive they were using hollowbodies with humbuckers.

Some of my own shoegazier stuff was recorded with a Strat, and my Jag doesn't even have the same vibrato unit, since I use pitch-shifter pedals.

That doesn't work for shoegaze, the Strat's vibrato arm is designed differently, so playing while holding it in the way that Shields used it doesn't alter the pitch the way the offset one does.

I used the Strat vibrato for something else entirely, but that's irrelevant to this discussion.

Just buy a reverb/delay that has pitch modulation, and you won't have to re-tune your guitar every time you play.

For clarification, Shields also used the Whammy pedal a lot, and used it to expand the range of his pitch-shifting. And it's not like he was rich either, JMs were cheap then and he was beholden to a label.

just put it in an open tuning, get about 5 of those really cheap reverb pedals from amazong and dink around wanging the wang bar and you have a perfect shoegayze

You don't actually need one of those.

You can use even the cheapest guitar possible, all that's needed is running it through a shitload of delays and reverb pedals, or multiple fuzzes.

I remember making decent shoegaze with a Strat, a Hardwire RV-7 on reverse, and a DS-1.
