>frontman of the band that was the personification of punk
>realized that his punk band was actually and empty corporate product
>left the group and started making the kind of music he really liked, the kind of music his manager told him to pretend to hate

Is John Lydon the most interesting man in music?

He was upfront about that commercial too. He flat out said, I wanted the money to finance a new album so I did a commercial.
>>
>>73602330
old men can do whatever the fuck they want. a punk that stays "punk" into his maturity might be as well mentally ill.
>>
>>73602362
Being mentally ill is actually more acceptable when you're old, believe it or not.

Pic related

He's a cunt but PiL was 10x more interesting than the Sex Pistols.
>>
>>73602397
He didn't need an example lol.
>>
>>73603102
Are there any similar bands to PiL? Do any side projects of Wobble and Levene even come close? Their debut First Issue is one of my all time favorite albums and I've listened to Metal Box at least 5 times to let it get through my head properly.

I dunno how similar you want, but First Issue reminds me of Live At the Witch Trials by The Fall. It's a nice little piece of British post-rock and Mark E. Smith is a drunken fuckin legend
>>
>>73604015
Thank you. I've been planning on getting into then for a while. Any more recommendations?
>>
The guy is a fucking legend and I would defend him to the death.

What The World Needs Now was surprisingly good.
>>
He should've used a new name after Levene and Wobble Left. PiL turned into The John Lydon Experience.
>>
>>73604202
Hex Enduction Hour by The Fall is basically the same thing as Live At the Witch Trials, so definitely check that one out too. Actually, just listen to The Fall in general. I hope I don't need to say Suicide, I think that's pretty much /mu/core at this point, but if you haven't heard it stop what you're doing and do so now. The only other one coming to mind right now would be Y by The Pop Group, very visceral and untempered
>>
He's an asshole, PILtd is pretty good though

>I hope I don't need to say Suicide, I think that's pretty much /mu/core at this point, but if you haven't heard it stop what you're doing and do so now
I've heard so many great things about them over the years and I really ought to listen to them as soon as possible. The Pop Group's Y is one of my all time favorite albums, along with For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? and We Are All Prostitutes compilation. I've listened to This Heat recently though. Thank you again.
>>
>>73604206
Is it worth listening to really? I thought that after The Flowers of Romance they were done. Either way, I think they are for most people and that's a shame.
>>
>>73604374
In a way, but the problem with John is that he's contradicted himself way too many times over the years. For any fans of PiL and post punk in general, I'd recommend this documentary:

He didn't support Trump though, he just doesn't blindly hate him as a racist because he's told to do so
>What of his adopted homeland then, is he scared that the Donald Trump train might just end up rolling into the Oval Office come November?
>‘No! I can’t see it happening’, Lydon assuredly replies.
>‘It’s a minority at best that support him, and it’s so hateful and ignorant. I agree with the basic principle that we’re all fed up with politicians, but you can’t replace them with businessmen, which is surely the more corrupt form!
>‘It’s deeply ironic and sad that people resort to running to a businessman – and one who is famous for managing to bankrupt a casino/hotel. How do you do that? Surely it’s the biggest money earner in the world!
>‘But people still can’t see the wood for the trees there. Everything instinctively tells me that he is a wrong’un – and I think he’s just one short temper away from World War Three, that fella!’
He also seems to admire him for pissing off the political elites, and it's really no surprise that John Lydon, a man who's spent his whole career doing that, would think that.

I love Wobble in this interview. There has literally never been a band more based than PiL ca. 1979.

The context really gets lost in this interview because the full version of it is more or less lost

Reminds me of this interview with Zappa in a disco of all places where an interviewer asks him whether Edgard Varese could've been a top 40 pop star... Are these people even self-aware? Not to mention that it was on live television for generations to see.
