Is anyone else enjoying the fuck out of this album? I love the direction hip-hop is headed, this is really innovative.
>>
>>73544250
bout to do a 2nd listen. whats ur favorite songs off it
>>
>>73544250
I'm glad that a pretty mainstream artist took a pretty experimental step, hopefully this helps push hip-hop culture away from trap and into more interesting stuff
>>
>>73544295
eh trap has a lot of room to grow into actually
only instance so far has been rodeo and it's artsy approach, but even travis hasnt been consistent with that direction

danny brown and vince are going left of field, so i wouldnt be surprised at others doing so too
rocky did a few times on his last project, but nothing i cared for
>>
Bought it because SOPHIE
>>
>>73544275
That's really hard. There wasn't a single weak moment in my opinion. That Kendrick feature caught me by surprise and blew my expectations out of the water.
>>
>>73544250
how the fuck is this innovative? it sounds like he paid aphex twin $20 bucks, got some half assed fl studio beats in return and made an album out of the
>>
>>73544250

>Anyone else enjoying this album?
>You know the album that has 3 threads currently in the catalog
>the album that has had a minimum of 2 threads about it on the front page for the last 72 hours

Literally use your fucking eyes you fuck
>>
I've listened to it 3 times so far. It's pretty good, but I wish it was a little longer
>>

You probably thought Atrocity Exhibition was innovative

>>
>>73544250
I admit I thought it was pretty mediocre on my first listen but I'm on my third now it's really amazing, the quality of this project is insane
>>
>>73544731

you didn't explain anything danny is "alternative" hiphop too
>>
>>73544698
Literally in literally every literal way. This has objectively bad songs like bagbak and rain come down, plus it has interludes and Vince singing. This also has atrocious hooks, and is way too short, making the record feel empty and not fleshed out.

>Alternative hip hop
Everything is alternative hip hop if you reach hard enough.
>>
>>73544359
rodeo isn't the only good or experimental trap album, and id argue its not even one of the best. also trap instrumentals have been gaining a ton of popularity with non-trap artists recently, who are sometimes more willing to innovate around them.
>>
>>73545015
post examples, i've only been exploring grime, uk drill, dancehall, and afropop
>>
>>73545225
examples of more creative/progressive types of trap? check out young thug to start off. also pretty much anything produced by metro boomin is great, check out his recent collaboration with Gucci "drop top wop". this sort of music gets discounted a lot but I think its really been moving forward in recent years. to me it just sounds mercurial and futuristic, like the lamborghini of instrumental styles. Part of that is probably the fast high hats, but it also has a lot to do with other sounds typically used in instrumentals like these. Shit you can even find examples on big fish theory. See intermittent trap hats in Yeah Right, or just the entirety of 745 although thats not as much of a futuristic feel.

If you're looking for examples of trap instrumentals used by not trap artists, you should have already heard some based on the examples you listed. Also just listen to any rap album out this year, its like a 90% chance there will be at least one song on there with an instrumental that is trap based or at least borrows elements from trap.

Trap music is the future.
>>
>>73544784
bagbak is not a bad song. turn your ears on man embrace that flow and that bounce.
>>
>>73545392
ok clearly you and i have different definitions of artsy trap
pornography, 90210, oh my dis side, alright, impossible, i can tell, the intro to maria im drunk

all instances of travis executing trap in a level that hasn't been done, and even he hasn't able to do since

drop top wop is classic gucci, not groundbreaking
young thug has a different approach every time

>Part of that is probably the fast high hats
a classic indication of a beat being trap and not anything new or next level

yeah right was no where near an experimental trap song

trap music has been the dominant sound for years now
>>
>>73545624
and what is next level about those songs? sure they sound more expensive than a lot of other trap and they're really good, but it seems like to you "artsy trap"(please use a different term, that wack as fuck, respectfully) equals a more commercial sound or more moving parts in the song. Even still, this has been done since, by many artists. Name a rapper and you can probably find a trap instrumental they've at least hopped on. Look at The Heart Pt. 4 by Kendrick, just a recent example. clearly has trap elements, but still maintains a high level of quality, 3 beat switches, etc. This isnt even a very good example, just one that jumped into my head.

Anyways, you weren't commenting on artsy trap in your original reply(assuming thats you), more making it sound like the only growth into maturity trap has had is rodeo, which I think is pretty ridiculous. If you can't understand that a trap song isnt made great by bells and whistles, but by the melodies played over the beat and the vocal performance/bars, then its probably just not for you. Thats no reason to insinuate that the only valid or mature project ever to come out of the genre is Rodeo, which I agree is good but not some revolution like you're claiming.

also you said you'd only been exploring grime, uk drill, dancehall, and afropop. I didn't know "classic Gucci" fell into those categories. It seemed that you hadnt heard much trap, and I thought I might point you towards some new material which I actually think is an improvement on "classic gucci". I think he's been tighter lately, and metro beats are really what I was trying to get at.

Young Thug does have a slightly different approach every time. I have no idea how that makes him non "artsy" or less progressive. Seems like it would make him more.

Also no shit fast high hats are a classic part of trap, I was just going up my own ass about my enjoyment of the genre.
>>
>>73545624
Also Yeah Right has one little hit of trap drums near the beginning, go back and listen. Pretty fun use imo.

We agree on the last point, I just can't see how you can realize that but not see the genre progressing or maturing.
>>
>>73546127
even look at Lil Uzi Vert, regardless of his image, he's a pop-trap pioneer.
>>
>>73544427
This. Heard the album because everyone kept recommending it to me. Is this what people call innovating? The only people who say something that retarded are the ones who probably don't listen to other genres
>>
It's fantastic. Ramona Park Is Yankee Stadium not being labeled as an interlude is weird, bit it basically makes the album flow like two EPs. First half basically sounds like Broke With Expensive Taste while the second half pushes more towards a Yeezus PC Music hybrid. Does the water rap theme better than Le1f and Yachty.

Kilo Kish killed all her features. even just saying "way up" in Samo elevates the fuck out of the track
>>
>>73546110
it's okay, some people didn't start listening to rap music until rodeo so they really have no idea the origins or progression of it all. you're 100% correct.

Deleted Rain Come Down, it's fucking trash andI can't believe it was a good way to end such a banger of an album.

>Trap music is the future.

Trap music is the nail in the coffin for hip hop. It's the most mediocre genre, and the appeal isn't even about music. It's entirely based on the cultural content, and that culture is rapidly becoming obsolete. I pity you if you truly believe this.

Rolling hi hats instantly mark a mediocre track for me, I immediately reach for the skip button.
