What changed sometime between 1965 and 1970 that led to progressive rock?

getting rid of the blues influence
>>73523235
This. They decided to focus on white culture and take influence from classical music and art instead of rhythmically simple black music.
Frank Zappa releasing Freak Out!
The Moody Blues releasing Days of Future Passed
The Beatles releasing Sgt Pepper
>>73523219
Certain musicians were like, "why don't we just make the best music instead?"
>>73523292
if anything white music is rhythmically simple though
>>73523292
But prog is heavily influenced by jazz as well which was an overwhelmingly black dominated genre.
Maybe Bob Dylan with some of his more lyrically complex lyrics and structures and whatnot drove some music in that direction
>>73523348
how did sgt pepper contribute to prog?
>>73523403
the jazz that influenced progressive rock is very different from the popular black music of the 50s and 60s. motown and rock and roll and rhythm and blues is very different from the musically complex and constantly evolving structures and harmonies and rhythms of coltrane and wayne shorter and miles davis

Bob Dylan is the person who revolutionized the music of the 60s. Popular music in general could be described as pre Bringing it Back Home and post Bringing it Back Home

Abbey Road

You are retarded

Nice answer
king crimson decided to make music
>>73524740
Im pretty sure the yes album came out first along with a few more early prog albums
>>73524771
I mean yes self titled
>>73524771
ITCOTCK is widely considered the first true prog album
You could make an argument for Days of Future Passed or Freak Out! but king crimson set the bar
I find it weird though
You have prog like Yes and KC that took a more interesting route with improv and leitmotifs and retaking ideas that were in previous tracks and a lot of more stuff
But then there's also stuff like Gentle Giant which seems like a gimmick to me (though I only listened their first album)
>>73524850
Most prog is gimmicky because most prog bands suck
>>73524881
That includes german rock
>>73524899
I've only listened to neu! and I enjoy them

Spinning pianos are important to making good music
Marijuana, LSD, and labels not saying no to musicians who wanted to play masturbatory, 20 minute songs about space and wizards and shit.
>tfw no industrial progressive rock
>>73524918
>never listened to Can, Faust, Cluster or Amon Düül II

Oh Can is german? Did not know that.
>>73525206
kraut = german
I'll use german since kraut reeks pretentiousness
>>73524785
That's not a prog album though. It's a good classic rock album.
>>73524850
I love KC and Yes, but Gentle Giant is absolutely on that same level and it's a huge mistake to dismiss them.
>>73524740
Best possible response
>>73524850
try Octopus and In a Glass House, those are their least pompous albums imo
>>73526291
Pretty much everything from S/T to Free Hand is gold.

Pink Floyd never ditched the blues. They just slowed it down instead.
>>73524810
Nah that's Caravan
>>73524990
as a huge progressive rock fan i found this hilarious
>>73523292
>They decided to focus on white culture
>Ignoring the heavy influece jazz had on prog rock
>>73523460
Fripp listened to it, and thus King crimson was born
>>73527450
Canterberry scene is not progressive rock
