lol, work with live instruments. Everything is easier that way and sounds amazing to begin with. Don't worry about being perfectly on click track. Trust me

I just picked up a korg nanokey2 as a spontaneous birthday present to myself. I have a couple of guitars and small instruments but I've never dabbled in anything like this.
Honestly the OP is a bit overwhelming. Saving all of the information to dig into later but was just wandering if there's anything I should directly focus on as a complete beginner?

hey /prod/
I currently use a tracker as my DAW. It's the best DAW I've found for me and I'm very happy with it. However I feel like I'm getting blocked into writing certain kinds of music because of the program design.
So what I'm looking for is a DAW/other programs/ideas with a completely unique workflow. Or some killer feature that leads to making different kinds of music.

If you don't already have a DAW to make your songs with then pick one, the pros and cons of any of the most commonly-used ones are immaterial to you at this point so don't spend too long at this.

>Youtube - [Your DAW] + Starting Out
If all you're wanting to do is have fun to begin with and you've not been taken in by the "sell beats make moniez fast" merchants (Who make their money from persuading people to watch their Youtube videos and from selling their beat-making guides, not from selling beats) then watch the Starting Out guide and get to it - a few weeks down the road you'll have worked out whether you want to learn more and at that point you can revisit the links.

No idea what the fuck you're talking about and I had to look up contact mics

I'm now very interested. Where can I read more about this /noise/ prod?

Can I record screaming and shit under water? Bashing shit with the mic attached?

Will it sound cool inside my acoustic? <.<
>>
>>73506524
Well I just started a noise general too, asked the same question, sometimes people post their gear setups

But yeah, you can scream underwater, feed that through all manner of pedals/misc. gear. You'd need a tougher one than the one I made to seriously bash it, but they're out there. I'm probably gonna affix it to my chest and experiment with body percussion.

And guitar stuff isn't really my area, but I know you can use it as a pickup.

>>
>>73505565
I'm pretty impressed my dude, especially for not having done this before and using Live. Personally, I think the snare was like 3 dB too loud and the bass was like 3 dB too quiet, but those would really be in the mix more so than the master. Maybe reducing the high mids (like maybe 1.5 kHz to like 4 kHz) just a touch and adding more low end (really narrow boost around 100 Hz) and boosting the air (above like 6 kHz) a touch might help it sound more even and broad across the entire spectrum. I like your panning though, keep it up! The best thing you can do is practice

I've recorded some demos with a guitar straight to FL Studio using the Rocksmith USB cable.
It kinda works but there is some annoying delay, would an audio interface fix it and make the quality of the recordings better?
>>
>>73507739
Equal parts audio engineering, composition, and guitar. If you want to do music in school, find a program at a school that's as open ended and self-selecting as possible. Otherwise you get pigeonholed into doing boring jazz shit, stuffy classical shit, or the worst option: writing about those things
>>
>>73507893
an interface would be better look for focusrite scarlett 2i2 or steinberg ur22mkII
>>
>>73507893
Chances are even a cheap interface will do a much better job at converting your input to digital, and using an actual preamp can make a huge difference in the difference between your music and any hum or noise

Dude bro, I really like your track! I love the whole dreamy feel it has. How did you record your drums? Is your drummer left handed, or did you pan for audience perspective? Did you switch to a new snare or retune it when the crosstick section started? At the beginning it sounded like the top head was too loose or the snares were too present or something, did you mic it from the bottom? If so, maybe turn down the bottom mic? I'd also like to hear more kick and overheads, just because there's so much going on with the cymbals and toms. Also, with the snare reverb hard panned it kinda pulls the snare to the right and kinda muffles it. Maybe pan the reverb a little closer to center and lower it by a touch? The guitar and bad tones are great! It maybe automating some panning in the lead guitar would be cool, I think it would help with the sense of space and dreaminess of the track. Great job dude! Sounds awesome

Thanks mate,

Tbh we are paying an engineer over in USA to mix. We have had loads of trouble trying to get the snare sounding really good. The engineer swears black and blue he had tried it all.

We recorded in a recording engineers studio (his shed turned into a pretty small room and control room with window thing. Drums in one room with bass DI. Gutiars in control room with amp.

I spent a shit load of time on my live guitar sound so it hasn't had any work really done to it from my understanding.

The bass was done in to a pre-amp, we just gave him examples of what we'd like and he's nailed it I reckon.

Glad you like it, we have been sending stuff back and foward for months and I feel its very close to master. The vocals we sent him are just not there. Gonna try some things.

Meh. You don't wanna record a bass or live because chances are 99.9% your room doesn't have any acoustic treatment so your frequencies are gonna go bananas. Just DI that bitch.
>>
>>73508215
I would recommend picking up a mackie mixer instead. You're gonna want it for when you need 8 inputs for the drummer. Not sure if the preamps on that lil box have better tone or not though. Just tube vs transistor amplification. Both are good.
>>
>>73508884
Are you a beginner? Don't worry about writing something good, just do SOMETHING. It's really hard to force yourself to come up with a good melody/chords. Sit down and make a shitty 3 note melody sound good, you don't have to save what you come up with. The goal is that after writing a bad melody and making it sound good 100 times, you can make a great song when you finally do come up with a good idea.
>>
>>73500576
I guess people are using the standard toolset.

I m looking around for midi controlers. I ve been interested in the akai apc for controling ableton's funtion. What are more cheaper alternatives to this tipe of controler?
>>
>>73509324
You can't download uniquesong.exe and have it given to you. Using ableton or FL won't make you sound like every else either. A daw is a tool for you to make a song with, it doesn't influence the kind of song you make.
>>
>>73509336
that's as cheap as they get with somewhat reasonable quality
>>
>>73508884
Start off with little bits and pieces. Maybe a few chords you like or a little series of notes, just an accorn of an idea. Then take that and expand it out. There's really no write and wrong and don't take it too seriously because after all it's only art. You'll eventually get to the point where you write out of inspiration, but at the start you'll begin by sitting there and strummimg different chords to see what sucks and what doesn't for hours. That usually turns out pretty bland "radio tier" songs but for now sense you have no base that's where I would start. Eventually the melodies will just come to you from nowhere. Those are the keepers.
>>
>>73509359
If that was even remotely true there would be no such thing as different DAWs.

I got a bass, I know how to play but don't know shit about guitar tone, only mixing and synths.

It sounds really good clean thru the soundcard's preamp but when I use the bass amp in guitar rig 5 its not as good

So what I'm asking is when do you use a bass amp and what kind of sounds can you get out of it
>>
>>73510887
>>
>>73511028
>but when I use the bass amp in guitar rig 5 its not as good

so........ don't?

desu i only ever use gr for bass if i'm looking for more of an overdriven tone- even then i don't use the bass pro cab, just the head

maybe some of the gr distortion in parallel too

other than that i just make heavy eq cuts in the low mids, slight boost around 2-3k if it's appropriate. compression and transient shaper when needed

using the vocal filter and phaser can be cool too. i haven't experimented too much with bass and gr honestly, i just think the cabs sound like shit, even for guitar usually
>>
Redpill me on headphones.
>>
how do you lay multiple rhythm guitar tracks of different tones in a mix
>>
>>73512180
getting good clarity across all frequency bands is key. goal is to train your ears on the pit falls of the headphones and how they compare to the sound of other speakers (without actually listening to the other speakers)

Consumer headphone speakers are "colored" to give the listener a wow factor (ie. Super Bass Boost MAX). Pro headphones are also colored, but in an effort to keep everything flat sounding. You can get by with consumer teir headphones, but you'll be doing a bunch of guess work because they are typically so "colored" its hard to tell what is "normal/flat." Pro headphones will require less guess work.

Any 4 track users out there? Looking for some recording tips. I tend to record pretty hot to get a good signal to noise ratio. Is dbx noise reduction good or nah?

i use the exact same one. i dont use the noise reduction as it sometimes takes away wanted sounds. i record hot. personally i like the added noise and distortion of using it so dont work too hard to get great quality.
>>
>>73513137
Bro I don't know jack shit about music productions and I've never had the opportunity to touch a 4-track IRL, but from what my tapebros say dbx noise reduction is supposed to be da shit. Just as with any other NR system though it is dependent on having your levels calibrated pretty accurately, with dbx this is more important than with Dolby B

What can I do to make the bass and kick "pump" more during the chorus?

good stuff.
use sidechain compression on the chords/rhythm-part, and have the kick trigger it. Drop the threshold way down. adjust the attack/delay on the compressor until it pumps the way you want it.
>>
So does the computer generate the music for you or do you import prerecorded sound?

how do i mix these rhythm guitars so they sound proper and big?

also they sound kinda harsh and trebly, any idea on how to fix that? just an eq cut around 4k~6k will do it well, or it will take the clarity away? the previous attemps i had with boosting lows and trying to make something "fatter" had muddied the mix, thats why i'm askin here

As soon as you externalize an idea you see facets of it that weren’t clear when it was just floating around in your head.
I started coming to the studio with less worked-out pieces, and eventually with nothing at all. I would just start working with that thing, “the studio,” as the instrument.

There is nothing outside of this process. This process called recording is the creative process. We don’t have the canvas standing in front of any landscape, you are going to make the landscape here and now.
Repetition doesn’t really exist.

As far as your mind is concerned, nothing happens the same twice, even if in every technical sense, the thing is identical. Your perception is constantly shifting. It doesn’t stay in one place.
If you had a sign above every studio door saying ‘This Studio is a Musical Instrument’ it would make such a different approach to recording.
Beware the panic effect that accompanies the high cost

One becomes increasingly oriented toward results, and progressively less inclined to engage in experimental activities that might not lead anywhere.

As a result of this, one focuses one’s attention on the safe bet, on the tried and tested techniques.

People in the arts often want to aim for the biggest, most obvious target, and hit it smack in the bull’s eye.

Of course with everybody else aiming there as well that makes it very hard and expensive to hit.

I prefer to shoot the arrow, then paint the target around it. You make the niches in which you finally reside.
The more time you spend on an old idea, the more energy you invest in it, the more solid it becomes, and the more it will exclude new ideas.
I wanted to use the studio like a microscope for sound, which is what good engineers do.
Most studio units — traditionally regarded as simple devices for altering or modifying a set sound — can be employed as instruments in their own right.
I can’t duplicate my own successes, because part of the creation of that effect is making something happen that you didn’t expect
Somebody in an interview said recently, “What do the words mean?” And I said, “What do the chords mean?”
A studio is an absolute labyrinth of possibilities — this is why records take so long to make because there are millions of permutations of things you can do.

The most useful thing you can do is to get rid of some of those options before you start.
Often in life you are confronted by many possibilities. The best thing you can do is just go for one with a quick decision, then make that choice work for you. It takes you to interesting places with surprising results.
When people censor themselves they’re just as likely to get rid of the good bits as the bad bits.

When I'm "in the zone" and have an idea that just flows out of my brain on its own, I record myself humming/whistling it and explaining how it sounds in my head.
I usually go on for a while until I've milked it completely and no creative idea or addition comes out.
This is because the moment you come up with something is the only moment where your mind is completely wrapped around the "vision" of how it sounds like, and when you stop and resume creating on it at a later time, you don't get the same level of coherence between the creative flow you had the first time and this one, so it's important to squeeze the idea right away and possibly even compose the whole song by humming in a recorder, and regard it as the only time you'll ever be able to compose on it (even if it might not be true).

I use studio one 2 artist and i am desperate to use 3rd party VST's, which is not possible in this version.
if anyone has a crack/serial(or anything really) that i could use so that i could upgrade to use VST's thatd be great...

If thats not the case, can you anons reccomend any DAWs i could check out? I mostly record instruments and microphones, so stuff like ableton doesnt catch my eye.. Thanks in advance

postin this time because i re-recorded the guitars miking my real amp... was told on a previous /prod/ that the rhythm guitars sounded boring and lifeless, and they were DI'd and amplitube'd

Pro Tools, although I don't know how easy it is to pirate.

Ableton can work with recordings really well, and is the best for sample manipulation/editing, so I suggest you give it a shot because it's very good.

>>73530517
incredibly shitty to pirate since the aax plugin format is a bitch and wrapping from vst is like going through hell
don't even bother

how to record such a huge, nice and full and everything, acoustic guitar sound like these? can be done at my room? with some cheap jumbo acoustic like the yamaha cpx500?

if by "mouth clicks", you mean you click your tongue, you just need to un-learn it. record yourself speaking a lot, clip together every single time you do it, and listen back to it. start catching yourself doing it in real-time, and it's going to drive you insane enough that you'll learn to avoid doing it.

tape head here, biggest tip for recording on a 4 track is making the most out of my the little. run a external mixer in between your instrument and the input on the 4 track to have more adjustment of EQ and levels. record hotter but beware NR DBX acts almost like a compressor and can fuck up drum tracks.

im here and also use a DAW but prefer my analog hardware
DAWlets will never understand how to make a gooc song with limited capabilities and just raw talent so dont let them bring you down

you poorfags get so mad when anyone has any gear thats not on your macbook air display. spending so much time trying to process sounds that real hardware does in half the time and In better quality.

Some people want to do things more musically ambitious than one bass line and one drum pattern with some knob twiddles.

Great assumption, I actually own a lot of hardware, including classic/vintage stuff. It's okay but kinda boring. Acting like someone must want to use an 808 or whatever like it's the pinnacle of electronic music is fucking retarded.

Daily reminder that nobody cares what you used to make a song (you'll at most get an "uh, neat" reaction from other producers), and that the only thing that matters is the end result and your enjoyment of the process.
>>
>>73534383
Pretty much, unless you're like a Charles Cohen/Dan Lopatin with a mastery over a specific instrument.
>>
>>73534383
>the only thing that matters is the end result and your enjoyment of the process.
It's the quality of the end result that matters. No one cares how much fun you had either.
>>
>>73533594
You are incapable of making an actual argument.
>>
>>73534449
True, but if you don't enjoy making music you're never going to make anything worthwhile.
>>
>>73534436
There are always exceptions. It's unlikely that anyone here is one of them.

>>73534449
>It's the quality of the end result that matters. No one cares how much fun you had either.
The quality matters to the listener.
The enjoyment matters to you.
That's what I meant.

Unless you're doing music for work/money, in which case enjoyment is nice, but not as important.

if your interested in this sort of stuff from a non-noise more ambient perspective, check out deepchord presents echospace "silent world." A large chunk of the album was created that way. As for your question, pedals and more pedals are always the answer for noise. I'm a huge fan of reverb, delay, distortion/fuzz.

Attach it to a soda can filled an eight of the way with vinegar. Cause a chemical reaction with baking soda and scratch the side with a knife. Post results.

Can someone help me with figuring out a drum loop?

I'm trying to recreate the drums to this song by Houses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkUu_Nd-jw4

I can get everything besides the snare ish thing that comes in at bout 0:13. Its got a clap on it I think, but I don't know what else is hidden in there.

Please and Thanks

How the fuck would you know? You can't make an actual valid point so you resort to bullshit.

That's really the most interesting thing you can do now. Pick up something for under $200 and go nuts with it. Analog has already been played out since forever.

>Might be getting a juno60. Is it worth it upgrading it so it has midi or should I just do something else for clocking? Also, what are your thoughts on this synth?
pro tip here guys
other than the eg's being snappier on the juno60, and a SLIGHT difference in the resonance, along with noisier chorus, 106 and 60 are really really close
which nobody is even sure why the resonance is different because the discrete circuit design on the filter was exactly the same minus being set up as a single ic on the 106?
tldr, if you get the choice between a 106 and 60, and you arent sure the 106 is probably always going to be the better choice

and seriously unless you already know what the fuck youre doing please for the love of god dont take a soldering iron to a 30 year old synth expecting everything to be okay

New thread?

>nobody is even sure why the resonance is different because the discrete circuit design on the filter was exactly the same minus being set up as a single ic on the 106?
It might be because the capacitors are different. The Sequential Circuits Pro One has always been known for having super nasty sounding resonance compared to other synths that use the same exact filter IC. If you replace the ceramic disc capacitors (which are nonlinear and change their capacitance as a function of the applied voltage) with film capacitors, it sounds much smoother and more like other synths. The thick film hybrid modules in the Juno 106 use SMD capacitors. They could use a different dielectric material than the Juno 60.

>and seriously unless you already know what the fuck youre doing please for the love of god dont take a soldering iron to a 30 year old synth expecting everything to be okay

No way man, just go at it until the solder pads separate from the board, then mix up the connectors when you put it back together. The guy who repairs it after you will just love that.

Even then yeah not all caps age the same either.

Cont.
Would really say unless you specifically want the weird resonance on the filter of the juno 60 you're so much better off with a 106, and you aren't sacrificing anything. If you're gonna end up modding the 60 to fit MIDI, you might as well mod the 106 to add the arp feature and extra LFO options.
>>
>>73535330
Because you have exposed yourself more than you realize

But go ahead and keep replying :^)
>>
>>73535924
>Even then yeah not all caps age the same either.
I don't know that aging effects are actually significant here. It doesn't really matter that much if the component values drift or whatever in a resonant filter.

>Would really say unless you specifically want the weird resonance on the filter of the juno 60 you're so much better off with a 106, and you aren't sacrificing anything.

The 106 has portamento and the 60 can modulate the pulse width with the envelope. Honestly I'm not crazy about either of them and I don't know why they're so desirable. They make like three good sounds, and you've heard those sounds a million times already.

Imagine you're actually playing piano (or actually play it on a keyboard)

Velocity is higher on the first of a sequence of fast notes, don't make every note of the chord hit exactly in time or togwther

>They make like three good sounds
I would disagree but I've used them frequently.

For me at least it's because the synths are incredibly simple, have nice filters, and the chorus can be amazing. You need to be going after something pretty specific to use one proper, and I do think many people have buyer's remorse on them since they change hands very often compared to other vintage synths.
>>
I have Reason essentials 9 and a Yamaha Cs-10 & Korg poly 800 for synthesizer leads/basslines/pads
im curiois about midi controllers and would like to know if reason has any good VSTs?
>>
>>73536334
>midi controllers
do the yam and korg not have midi out????

or do you just want more knobs..?
>>
>>73536383
nayrt, but often it's better to be able to assign the channel through the controller when you're trying to control multiple synths. also, record + play buttons are convenient.
