I know a really good album you might like as well. Post pics of your mother's breasts to confirm.

This except I also can't get into ETK. Dots and Loops through Margerine Eclipse is amazing though.
I think Refractions in the Plastic Pulse is their best overall song but as an album Dots and Loops is a bit inconsistent to me. I much prefer the other golden era Stereolab albums when judged as albums. But man, Refractions, Diagonals and Parsec are so fucking good.
why'd they break-up?
Weird analogy, OP. I'm surprised people actually favor any Stereolab album over Emperor Tomato Ketchup. It's like they've never heard Tomorrow Is Already Here before.

rip Mary Hansen
I really can't stand Emperor Tomato Ketchup. Is their whole discography very similar to that or is there other stuff different?

Dots and Loops is less repetitive and mixes in electronics from the Mouse on Mars guys and some other wizardy from a guy from Tortoise. It's a pretty unique album, not just in Stereolab's discography.
You can also try out Margerine Eclipse, which has interesting dual mono mixing.

More of an eternal hiatus. But yeah, Mary dying probably didn't help.

Their sound was always subtly shifting so if you don't like ETK I'd say be wary of Mars Audaic Quintet maybe but that's about it. The stuff before those two was much rawer and the stuff after it is much cleaner and poppier. If you want to get particularly far away from the ETK sound, start with Chemical Chords and go backwards until you don't like what you're hearing anymore.

according to the latest post on their site they felt their 'work was done for the moment'. which could mean lots of things, but my interpretation is they felt they needed a break, or that they had exhausted their ideas for the time being. which i feel is pretty true - their albums after Margerine Eclipse were fairly inconsistent and uninspired.
