The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Okay, it's been a few weeks and I listened to quite a bit more on the essentials chart. I'll give brief thoughts on as many as I can. Also, the color means shit all.
>Godspeed - Lift Your Skinny Fists
Good album. Can't see revisiting this for a while but definitely enjoyed it. The ending was anti-climatic AF though.
7.8-8/10
>Radiohead - OK Computer
It's solid , but it never impressed me too much though.
7-7.5/10
>Radiohead - In Rainbows
Really liked the electronic edge and general atmosphere to a lot of this album. Will definitely listen to it more.
>Joanna - Newsom
Love the fuck out of this album. It's an album I've started a lot, but never finished until recently. The compositions are put together immaculately and the lyrics are top notch. Every time I've listened to Emily I've almost always interpreted it in a different way.
9/10
post 1/i dunno
>>
>>73472923
That classic album we all now and love called Newsom by Joanna
>>
>>73472923
>Coil - The Ape of Naples
This needs more listens then one quite honestly. I still thought it was good but, I feel like I need to experience this at least one more time to get the full effect.
7.5-7.8/10
>Brian Eno - Another Green World
Good shit. I can see the rest of Eno's art rock being listened to in the future.
8/10
>Faust - s/t
Fucking great. It never grew thin on me and it was a fully engaging listen the whole way through. If anyone could rec other things in their discography I would appreciate that a lot.
8.5/10
>Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
I like this, don't get the full hype behind this I guess. Running Up That Hill is definitely a 10/10 song for me though.
7/5/10
>The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psycho Candy.
Shoegaze just kind of isn't for me I guess. I'm willing to give it another shot but I don't remember anything in particular standing out.
6-6.8/10
>>
>>73473101
FUCK meant Ys.
>>
>>73473123
Heh nothing personnel kid
>>
>>73473109
>Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Like this a good bit. Above average but not something I can see growing on me in any big way.
7/5-7.8/10
>Frank Zappa - Freak Out
A solid first time up to bat. I love the humor and general wit along with the sound of the music on here. Going to look deeper into Zappa's discography along with seeing about more Doo-wop.
8/10
>Art Barkley and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin'
Like most Jazz albums, it needs a second listen from me to appreciate it fully, but still solid AF.
7.5-8/10
>>
>>73473221
Ryo Fukui - Scenery
Good album. Particularly liked how the bass was in the left ear, the drums were in the right, and the piano was put between. It helped in giving a clear listen imo.
8/10
>Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Not much special I can think of to say about this album. Good and classic.
8/10
>Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Fantastic, The hard guitars and drums along with the general stoner sound make this a consistently amazing listen. Will be exploring more into metal without a doubt.
8.5/10

Here's an album from my home country that I decided to share

Vesa-Matti Loiri - 4+20 (1971)

>"4 + 20", recorded in March 1971, was the debut album by Finnish flautist/singer/actor Vesa-Matti Loiri. Loiri was already a "familiar face" on the modern Finnish Jazz scene at the time. 40 years later he would be considered one of the central pillars of Finnish culture. For the recording he invited a group of friends, which in retrospect reads like the who's who of Finnish Jazz at the time: saxophonist / flautist Esa Pethman, saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen, organist Tuomo Tanska, guitarist Hasse Walli, bassist Pekka Sarmanto and drummer Esko Rosnell. The music is very versatile and ranges from Jazz via Folklore to Rock and even Classical, all arranged in a Jazzy fashion and performed joyously yet somewhat informally

>jazz, flute, slightly field recording-ish, featuring also the weirdest fucking cover of a finnish traditional song about a grandma's old clock you will ever hear. It's also pitch-shifted.

Henry Flynt - Purified by the Fire (1981)
>Drone

Those who adore You Are My Everlovin' will be happy to learn that this is essentially an alternate take. Recorded in the same year, and with the same lineup and scope, the single-song performance dives deep into an eastern influenced, violin improv led drone-minimalist structure. Many of the same motifs from Everlovin' reveal themselves, but despite the similarities it is still a worthwhile listen, and dives slightly deeper in both his drone and hillbilly fiddle styles than the Everlovin' release.
A welcome compliment to his previous release.

>Daniel Bachman - Daniel Bachman
>american primitivism
3
When talking about the American primitive style it's obvious how Basho and Fahey really did set the bar high.
Here we have Daniel Bachman who is a great guitarist but that's it, he still lacks the ideas of the great figures previouly mentioned to take his music to other terrains.
In this release he tries to achieve this by making use of droning segments which work great, but the main flaw I find when listening to his compositions has to do with inconsistency.
Still, I really hope he keeps those elements in a next release and improves them.
Favorite tracks: Watermelon Slices on a Blue Bordered Plate, The Flower Tree.

>4 Bonjour's Parties - Pigments Drift Down to the Brook
>chamber pop
3.5+
This is pure beauty. Male-female voice combo, most of the time in english with just a little japanese; trumpets, flute, great drumming, it actually feels weird for an album like this to reach the 60 minute mark but I also think there isn't a moment that shouldn't be there. Every song transitions into the next one perfectly.
Favorite tracks: Satellite, Ruins, Amalthea.

Will listen to Vijay Iyer when I come back

Hi everybody, i am new in this, so I started with just a little chart (Sorry with my very bad english)

>Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas (6.5/10)
It was enjoyable but I do not think I would hear it again in the future, but who knows

>Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs (8.5/10)
This album took me by surprise, a very calm pop and too enjoyable, highly recommended

Simon & Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence (7/10)
I liked the album, but I do not know, I expected it to be a little dark

>Killing Joke - Killing Joke (6.5/10)
I recently discovered Love Like Blood by Killing Joke and I loved it, I decided to listen to their debut album, it's not bad, it has some good songs like The Wait, I think I should give it another listen

>Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (6.5/10)
It's an interesting rock record, I do not think I'll hear it again soon but who knows

Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Love And Hate (8/10)

This was what I was looking for with Simon & Garfunkel, I'm very interested in hearing more from Leonard Cohen

Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
Every song they write sounds the same and the singer sounds like Peter Griffin on codeine. I am beginning to get bored of Pere Ubu.
3-3.5

The Spoils of War - s/t
Neat little prog/psyche ditty. Not particularly attention holding but some of the less guitar and piano/organ centered parts are interesting.
3

Liturgy - Aesthetica
Listening to this again, and I could see myself listening to it more. The drummer is insane, electronic parts are a bit shit, guitars range from interesting to chug chug metalcore djent tier stuff on “Generations.” HHH’s weird loop pedal choral parts are eh, and so are his “AYYYYYYYYEEE,” Silencer-tier vocals on the more traditional tracks. Very wall of sound-ish at times, considerably more anthemic than most black metal, with the exception of tracks like “Veins of God,” which sounds like it’s straight off a Melvins album. HEY!̀̀͞ HEY!̀̀͞ HEY!̀̀͞ HEY!̀̀͞ HEY!̀̀͞
3.5

Some Bulgarians - Fly, Fly My Sadness
I enjoyed this more than the last folk album with the drones and throat singing. The harmonies between the lower pitched singers are nice, although I don’t like the female higher pitched ones that much.
3.5

Judee Sill - Heart Songs
Little bit of a country whatever. The songs are homely and so is her crooning style of singing with no heavy drawl. The lap steel, lead guitar, and piano is nice, could do without the fiddling, string sections, woodblocks, harmonica, banjo, organ, and marimba, but it’s alright. In general I don’t like an unnecessary amount of instruments in an album, this one uses quite a few. Don’t think all the vocal doubling was necessary. I preferred the more stripped down tracks like “There’s A Rugged Road,” but “The Donor,” was quite good as well.

You could also check out Пicнi з Укpaїни by Drevo for something more akin to the Le Mystère des voix bulgares if you like them. More ethereal than most Slavic folk, which is more grounded and Earthly.

You should also check out Kazma Kazma's Пляcки тpyбaдypoв, it's extremely weird and unique and I am forcing ever /daily/ user to listen to it.

>>73484798
Being distressed perpetually is an essential part of Ukrainian culture. Though, thinking about it, that applies to eastern Europe in general. And Armenia. And Georgia (the country).

>>73485022
Really? I find Terminal Tower to be their most diverse and interesting release (as it's a compilation of non-LP singles), though I could see someone who was never particularly interested in their sound being bored by it.

Spoils of War is one of the most fascinating uses of early electronics in popular music, though it can definitely be more grating (in a bad way) and unfocused than the more famous United States of America. I do wonder how it would be viewed if it had gotten a proper release instead of an apparently ultra obscure private pressing before getting reissued decades later.

You might like Sill's s/t more, but I really like the overblown chamber/baroque sound that was big in that era. Maximum comfy.

I think you'll like the Kazma Kazma album, it's the only psychedelic Ukrainian (sung in Russian) avant-prog medieval avant-folk post-punk album ever made.

good friend rodriguez vs blapp

Welp, final one.

I really dig HEALTH's self titled. Insane, pulsating and tribal drums, jagged, noisy guitars, coupled with insane amounts of feedback that are weaved in very well. Reminds me of No Wave music. I didn't like the whimpery female vocals on //M\\, but I'm not complaining much.

Then there's Venus In Cancer. I've never heard Robbie Basho stuff, but I must say that this is genuinely pretty. The music has this naive joyful spirit to it, like a kid prancing an empty field. The guitar's picking and style is almost like a dance in itself. Then come the vocals. My lord, are they beautiful. Operatic bliss to match the beauty of the picking. Even at moments where there is a brooding darkness in the strings, it feels like an adventure. My eyes felt a teary sensation (brief exaggeration, I know, I'm sorry).

The winner is blapp. Congrats on winning the first ever tourney I made.

I will put a blank one up to replace that. I've updated the list with new albums, some 2017 releases too. Any takers?

Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy (2005)
>indie rock, indie folk

Fine folk rock album in the vein of NMH and co. that tends to get better the less rockier it is. "For Real" is a great rock tune, playing with dynamics perfectly, but all the other rock tracks stray too far into an emo-pop realm that does not sit well with me. It's mostly the vocalist, who has an effective country twang on the folkier tracks but an unbearably whiny voice on the rockier tracks, but even the instrumentals show so much more creativity on the folk tracks. Could be great if the emo-pop influence was completely sucked out of it, but the damage is already done.

Albert Ayler Quintet - Spirits Rejoice (1966)
>avant-garde jazz, free jazz

I'm thinking that I like Ayler a lot more live than in the studio. A few tracks here amount to little more than typical Ayler fare, but that man was tapping into something ridiculous on other pieces like the title track and "Angels". The title track is one of the best free jazz pieces I've ever heard, incorporating military marches, anthems, and a shocking ear for melody into one of the most beautiful pieces of pure cacophony I've ever heard. "Angels" intersperses a sparse harpsichord with some more insane free jazz, and this odd mixture works absolutely perfectly. "Holy Family"'s rock-esque attitude is great as well, but the other two tracks say little more than what's already been screamed and hollered by the other tracks. Doesn't quite reach the sheer power and passion of the Greenwich Village set, but it comes damn close.

3.0+

Jesu - Jesu (2004)
>drone metal, shoegaze

The combination of metal and shoegaze doesn't work for me terribly often. Metal elements usually suck me out of the wall of sound effect the shoegaze elements aim to create, and the shoegaze usually adds too much of a pop influence that negates the power of the metal. This is absolutely no exception, but it's probably my favorite in this pseudo-genre that I've heard. The metal bits here are great, every bit as pummeling as the best stuff by Godflesh or God with a heavy emphasis on the wall of sound that makes it that much more crushing. The shoegaze bits are a lot iffier. Broadrick is a shitty vocalist and his over-emphasis of syllables and words gives the vocals a very dramatic, labored feel that's matched by the music. The more this switches over to shoegaze the more it seems like it's trying too hard to create something dramatic and crushing rather than letting it come naturally. Decent, with some pretty glaring issues.

wow the first track on this lorde album sucks

Sir Richard Bishop - Salvador Kali (1998)
>american primitivism, free folk

Bishop's forays into straight primitivism don't reach up to the genius of either Bishop or the genre, but his gypsy jazz and flamenco are remarkably authentic while still retaining that level of weirdness that makes Bishop's music unique. The longer pieces tend to drone on and on, especially the piano-led "Al-Darazi" (by far the worst track here), but the shorter pieces are beautifully concise enough to counteract this. Better than While My Guitar Violently Bleeds, for my money.

Lorde - Melodrama (2017)
>synthpop, art pop

Pure Heroine is solid, especially for a modern pop album, and that's because Lorde's voice and personality is intrinsically suited to slow-burning songs like "Tennis Court", "Buzzcut Season", and yes, the ever so popular "Royals". A couple tracks here retain that sound, like the admittedly decent "Sober", but there's a higher propensity towards generic dance-pop here, and Lorde's vocals are so unbearably affected on these tracks. "Green Light", the opener, is a particularly extreme case, but every other dance-pop track here just sounds so disjointed and /off/, and absolutely not in a good way. The ballads are also a lot less interesting, just paint-by-numbers top 40 pop, through and through. I really do fail to see the hype for this.

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for My Halo (2011)
>folk rock, singer/songwriter

Shockingly pretty awesome. With all the chillness and slacker vibes this whole album exudes, Vile never forgets to write good, interesting songs. A lot of musicians in this vein let their vibes make up for their lack of songwriting prowess, but the songs here are well-written and well-arranged, full of life without ever losing that cool, minimalistic aura. A bit dull at times, and Vile isn't exactly the best vocalist, but really good for what it is.

>blapp vs comet

Graham Lambkin's Salmon Run was a beautiful haunt. How Graham mixes these sounds together was in itself a spiraling whirlwind of chimes, bird calls, and other ominous sounds, some especially that come straight from the mouth. Jumpskins makes my heart feel like it's coming out of my chest, it's really uncomfortable. The classical composition samples almost sound like Graham is in the room of an actual performance with a bad tape recorder. However, moments like the laughter in Currency of Dreams feel phoned in. Is it meant to represent the oddity, feverish, and surreal feeling our dreams provide? I don't know. But I think I like the album, and how it submerges you in things.

Broadcast has a nice overall sound, I really don't get the Stereolab comparisons to be quite honest. I like the sound of indie rock blended with bit music that the band goes for in here. My problem with the music kind of lies in Trish's vocal delivery, and the mixing. Trish's vocal delivery is very stern and stoic, not to say she's bad, I do like it to an extent, but she can come off a bit monotone over the course of time. It's not like the monotone vocals of Casiotone for The Painfully Alone, for example, where the monotone helps to further reveal the underlying tragedy of the lyrical content. But back to Broadcast. I think for me, the mixing is kind of bothersome. The bitcrushed electronics and the indie rock elements appear to be "piercing" against each other at points where there is difficulty, with the vocals kind of struggling to stay afloat. A second listen through my speaker helped to figure out if it blended better, and it did to an extent. Michael A Grammar, Goodbye GIrls are catchy as hell.

TL;DR: Good choices in their own elements, but the winner is blapp again. You may advance.

i've only been out of school for 12 days and my sleep schedule has already completely gone to shit

Bessie Smith - The Essential Bessie Smith (1997)
>blues, vaudeville blues, vocal jazz

This is totally out of line with the blues I normally listen to, but it's really great in its own way. Smith is among the most charismatic, versatile vocalists I've ever heard. She has the humor and laid-back demeanor of a lounge singer and the fire and brimstone passion of a gospel singer all in one. Her backing band is equally on point, scoring both of Smith's styles immaculately. Sure, two hours of this can get old, but Smith's charismatic vocals coupled with the purely fun nature of the songs makes this more than a worthwhile listen.

>Vihay Iyer & Wadada Leo Smith - A Cosmic Rythm With Each Stroke
>ECM style jazz
3-
The interaction between Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith is great, the main piece here is the suite that gives the album its title, where the piano playing of Vihay Iyer serves as a canvas for Wadada Leo Smith to play the trumpet and who ends up stealing the show. It tends to follow a slow flow in which the piano often falls back but still manages to lead the path.

El-P - Fantastic Damage (2002)
>experimental hip hop, abstract hip hop, east coast hip hop

El-P is obviously always a production wizard, but his efforts here seem a bit weaker than they do on Funcrusher Plus, The Cold Vein, or even the Run the Jewels albums. A lot of tracks tend to have the same quirks, El-P creates a distinct sound for the album itself which in turns makes every track kinda blend together. His rapping is about as good as it normally is, serviceable but easily overshadowed by the production. He's done better work, and there's some stuff I certainly don't like here, but I can't complain that much.

2.5+

Masayuki Takayanagi New Direction Unit - April Is the Cruellest Month (1991)
>free improvisation, free jazz

Compared to the apocalyptic, absolutely /huge/ Mass Hysterism in Another Situation, this comes off as incredibly tame and a bit limp. Takayangi's earth-shattering guitar is pushed aside in favor of more traditional jazz instrumentation, which is a bit of a let down. The new free jazz style here is done well, but it really does lack that power that makes Takayanagi's other stuff so great.

some post-internet fuckboy tips from rodriguez:
every offshoot label from dream catalogue (TKX, Vault EVE) generally release albums similar to DC that
a.) are usually free to download
b.) take a lot more interesting risks than main albums (mostly because less money is involved)
and c.) do a much better job maintaining a consistent aesthetic and storyline

some other weird general plunderphonics labels that are also generally better at maintaining a theme and releasing good music:
https://goregoregore.bandcamp.com/ self-describes it's aesthetic as "kidcore & post-vore"
https://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.com/ a lot more varied and bright, but does place heavy emphasis on plunderphonics
https://bedlamtapes.bandcamp.com/ (editor's note: oscob is literally only good as a label manager, and even that is debatable.)
https://meltytapes.bandcamp.com/ heavy emphasis on sound collage and drone
https://crystaldisplay.bandcamp.com/
https://exotapes.bandcamp.com/

thank you for your time.

Mickey Newbury - 'Frisco Mabel Joy (1971)
>progressive country, singer/songwriter

Doesn't even come close to reaching the supreme heights of Looks Like Rain, but a fine country album in its own right. It takes a lot more boisterious, typically country sound than its predecessor, both vocally and instrumentally. There are still harpsichords and synthesizers abound, but the songwriting is a lot more jaunty and typical, for lack of a better word. The immaculate arrangements keep it from getting too generic and typical, and all in all it's still one of the finer country records around.

>The Flashbulb - Flexing Habitual (2006)
There used to be a point where I thought that The Flashbulb primarily made breakcore (I even remember getting corrected by another anon once after describing Love As A Dark Hallway as a breakcore album in a sharethread). After listening to some more of his music, I decided that The Flashbulb wasn't a breakcore producer, but that Flexing Habitual was his sole breakcore album. As I listen to it now though, a lot of it isn't even breakcore in the first place. Sure, there's tracks like Chik Habit and Amen Iraq which definitely do sound like breakcore, but there's a lot more of the typical Flashbulb style drill 'n' bass than I thought. A lot of these tracks are pretty bare and lack staying power; it reminds me more of his older M3 style work as opposed to tracks like Binedump that came out the year prior. I learned recently that these tracks are all from his live performances, so I guess that they would sound pretty intense in a venue, but it loses a lot of its impact collected in album form. 2.5-/5 (+0.5 because Lucid Bass III is one of my favorite Flashbulb songs of all time)
