I was told recently that instead of ii-V-I, just play the first two chords, then again one step down. Then you can resolve into a key other than your original one
>Gm9 - C7, FM7 becomes...
>Gm9 - C7, Fm9 - Bb7, EbM7
Or you can keep going down.
I ended up doing that exact progression but going further down to Ebm9 - Ab7 and did a quick C7, Gb7 - F7, before returning to a different riff in Gm
