What do you think of Mickey Newbury? I'm trying to get into his music, but I get too emotional at times. Should I start at Looks Like Rain and continue chronologically?

For what I've read about him, he seems to have been very influential on many artists, but his own work did not sell all too well.
His music is such a gem.
