Pop is a pretty vague category.
>>73368828

johnny marr & morrissey had pop down to a science
>>73368828
Agreed. One of my favorite songs of all time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMyCa35_mOg
Oh baby don't it feel like heaven right now?
>>73369018
You know the general concept of pop music but if I had to put a finer point on it -- music with the "aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology"
>>73369098
That narrows it down a bit yeah.
Baby Blue - Badfinger

I'll come in with a more modern contestant

>Hyperballad
Meh, the Yoko Kanno rippoff is actually better.
>>73368871
no it isn't you fucking retard
>>73369170
Day After Day is better
>>73368828
I think it's probably that or Friday I'm in Love for me. I'm fascinated by artists like Hall and Oates, and the Cure, and Prince who were able to crank out amazing pop songs like it was nothing. Moreso than I am with artists that were more experimental. There's just something interesting about crafting a perfect pop song to me.
>>73369304
It is a very good pop song, but if OP is asking for the best pop song wouldn't it be one that achieved the goal of pop, which is mass appeal? I mean, heck, if we're talking favorites I'd be posting Sweet Tuesday Morning and In the Meantime/Some Other Time, for starters. They had a lot of better songs than Baby Blue, for sure.
>>73368828
Either >>73369012 or this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aeETEoNfOg
>>73369448
Day After Day had mass appeal, I feel it accomplishes the ideals of the pop form as you describe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cqdv032mFbg&feature=share
>>73368828
Toxic is the perfect pop song in my opinion.

I wish Billy could still write like this. I'll never stop loving him for his good years and wishing him the best, though, no matter how many Being Beiges he churns out.
>>73368828
I don't know how well it charted in Britain but in America I don't remember it getting much airplay unfortunately
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaEPCsQ4608
Always think it works in a pop songs favor when they have one minor element that pops. Like the "krrhh krrhh" in Creep, the "DNN DNN" in Tainted Love, the "DRN DRA DRN DRN" in Bullet With Butterfly wings. I think the bursts of strings in this song is along the lines of those. I've never met anybody who disliked this song.

I'm surprised that no one posted this one yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGSKrC7dGcY
This is such a non-entity of a band that I'm embarrassed for loving this song so much.

>>73370509
FUCK. We're bringing out the classics now
I vote this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu2iv-vMKT8
>>73370476
Uploader has not made this video available in my country.
But I agree. The 80's had a lot of amazing pop.
This

It will never die
>>73370543
So this is who they were covering!
Kind of sad that adorable sweet voices lead singer from SPNtR was wasted on corporate covers of classic songs the public forgot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WOYnv59Bi8
>>73370590
True. I guess one hit wonders have to stick together. Both are such great pop songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssX9nWAJsbE
Is it possible to not groove when this song comes on in a car? Do any of you not at least lip sync this song, if not butcher the high notes with zeal?
The 80s had hits on deck for the entire decade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc-P8oDuS0Q
In all honesty, it has to be this. https://youtu.be/Zi_XLOBDo_Y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY
>>73371388
this song is garbage
>>73370476
this
>>73370509
this song basically taught me how to have a crush
>>73370834
As far as production goes it's a contender, but the bassline was pretty much stolen from I Can't Go For That which is an even better pop song
>>73369098
although i agree with you in principle, there are some genres and artists, that would argue they are not pop bands, but their music still follows a pop formula.
for example, i would consider Black Sabbath "Paranoid" to be a fantastic pop song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkXHsK4AQPs
>>73371397
as if.
>>73371397
You're garbage.
Prince - Purple Rain (obviously i can't put a YT link but you all know it)
are you kids even trying

Unironically
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1fzJ_AYajA
>>73371437
That's cute, anon.
>>73371675
I've been trying to pick a Beatles song but you have to consider how vast their catalog is. Them and David Bowie. I was having a hell of a time with U2 as well.
>>73371818
From a best pop song standpoint
>Beatles
Let It Be
>Bowie
China Girl
>U2
Streets Have No Name
>>73371818
>U2
This or New Years Day
https://youtu.be/XmSdTa9kaiQ
>>73371818
For Bowie, I'd go with Heroes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgcc5V9Hu3g
or Young Americans
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScVi_L817ec
Probably robbie williams angels or George Michael freedom '90
>>73369170
Breaking bad.
Does anyone have that song with the dyke in the jeans? It came out in the late 90s and there was an acoustic guitar.
>>73370509
I want to kiss the singer
Our lord and savior JC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRaKBBQwJZE
>>73371854
>Beatles
Here Comes The Sun
>Bowie
Young Americans
>U2 (no where near on the level of the above)
Beautiful Day
>>73371971
I'd go with 11th Dimension but it's close. Out of the blue is another very solid option
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl15PlIXHIk
>>73371868
I'm bias because I'm sick to death of With or Without You, and I think it's their weakest radio song. It's so uninteresting and cliche.
Where the Streets Have No Name?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzZWSrr5wFI
I'm tempted to nominate Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me. That is just a sexy fun song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDl1c0nR5SI
>>73371960
Me too, anon, me too. She was the cutest thing ever, especially in that video.
>>73371974
>Here Comes The Sun
Here Comes the Sun wasn't one of their poppy songs though. I LOVE that song, especially acapela, though.
>Young Americans
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. But I'm still indecisive. I'm thinking I'd pick Lets Dance. It's really freaking hard, though.
>Beautiful Day
I do like it but is it their best pop song? I'm leaning towards...
>>73372030
>>73370509
this is giving me aggressive flashbacks to when i was a young lad

Just Like Heaven is amazing, the DJr cover makes it even better. My favorite by The Cure though is Pictures of You and that might actually be my favorite pop song.
My runner-up is Kate Bush's Hounds of Love.

>>73368828
I have to say, maybe that song is the best pop song ever written.

can't tell if you're joking, because that describes fully 50% of 90s songs

>>73372105
Let's Dance is not a hard call to make for Bowie's poppiest
Burning down the house by the talking heads
(I don't think it's their best I just think it's their most popular one, and it happens to be their best)
These are the first to come to mind.

/mu/ has been a spinoff of Reddit for years now.
The average /mu/tant in 2017 wasn't even alive when 9/11 happened.
