I have a friend who believes the overall quality of music released in the past decade has declined (he's not militant about this belief, he just sucks at finding good music). Who are some artists primarily active in the past few years that I can show him to prove him wrong? I'm down for any individual album or track recommendations as well. Any genre will do as long as it's legitimately some of your favorite music.
>>73349992
lurk more. if you did you could show them yourself. dont mean to be mean but just trying to be real with you.
>>73350010
I've already made a playlist, just looking for more ideas that are outside of my own taste
>>73349992
He's not wrong.
>>73349992
Glass Animals are fantastic. They've only been active a few years but keep getting better and better. Very trippy, smooth, rich indie rock with great layering and production. Check out:

>>73350023
What kind of music do they like? I really like https://youtu.be/Jb6IOgkVW8k right now. but might be strange for a pleb.
>>73349992
yeah hes not wrong. we have to wait another 5 years for a new movement/creative trend to resurface, right now its stale as shit
>>73349992
Depends is he a pleb?
>>73349992
what does he like?
>>73349992
>I have a friend who believes the overall quality of music released in the past decade has declined
he's not wrong. it's also declined over the last 50 years. but there are still a lot of amazing releases.
>>73350059
this is great.
my favorite ep of the last 3 years.
Kanye West
Joanna Newsom
Sufjan Stevens
Sigur Rós
Tim Hecker
Flying Lotus
PJ Harvey
Honestly think hes right, too much trite indie bullshit and bland EDM pop in vogue right now
Finding some bands that are good and active now doesn't disprove his point
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64M_AKe3XVk
it takes time for good music to be discovered and achieve popularity. old music always seems better because the good shit of the era is more well known
>>73350146
>>73350133
>>73350099
I'd describe his taste as "eclectic normie." He's into a wide variety of stuff but nothing extreme (ex. noise) and nothing beyond the surface level of any genre.
>>73349992
desu i really don't even care about new music that much either, pretty much all i listen to is 80's stuff + krautrock
>>73350213
This.
In 40 years people won't know who Katy Perry or the Chainsmokers are
Grimes, Chelsea wolfe
>>73350221
If he's patient enough he may enjoy Eternal Tapestry, try Beyond the 4th Door or A World Out of Time. Tame Impala might also appeal to him. finally, I'd recommend this little-known neo-psychedelic band Once and Future Band
>>73350257
DID
Swans
>>73350199
Woah this is fucking sick. Ty for the share.
>>73350263
allah-las and the growlers are pretty decent too
>>73350213
>it takes time for good music to be discovered and achieve popularity
sometimes. but, in other decades, a lot of artists that were popular were also extremely good. it's rarer now for a good artist to make to break the top 40
Cigarettes After Sex just released their self title a few days ago, I'd add the song Each Time You Fall in Love to your playlist OP.
Queens of the Stone age might be acessible enough, and good enough to help convice a normie.
>>73350263
OP here, love eternal tapestry (wild strawberries ftw), but unfortunately, I think it might be a little too psych for him. I planned to suggest a few tame impala tracks.
>>73350286
forgotten mu-core
Black keys Arctic monkeys Royal blood jack white cage the elephant
Theyre all keeping rock alive in the mainstream (more or less)
>>73350199
i like this anon. Nice
ffhks.bandcamp.com
this band has been REALLY active..
Andy Stott, Jessica Pratt, Kassem Mosse
>>73349992
He's right.
>>73349992
He's right. Music on the whole is worse now. Even good modern bands are just copying or "reviving" old sounds.
>>73350099
im loving this.
>>73350374
Jesus Christ, these are the bands keeping rock alive? PLEEEEEB.
>>73350374
Top Kek
>>73350286
>>73350368
this shit is literally >listens to MBV once + guitar solo
>>73350749
there's a sax in there too.
>>73350779
where?
>>73350811
The "guitar solo" is actually a saxophone, the one that starts at about 1:30 in and gets used again later
>>73350374
we're doomed
>>73350836
that's neat i guess, but why not just save the hassle and use an actual guitar considering it sounds exactly the same
>>73350860
idk ask this guy, he's their woodwind player
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCzg5BFpKZQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPXPURGP-6k
Just send him this
Im a very unhappy person so I cant enjoy most music anyway
please, don't recommend him some shitty nigger music
>>73349992
He's pretty well right though.

honestly, shut the fuck up asshole
>>73350906
this chart is from when you could mention AJJ and not have the autism brigade on your heels
>>73349992
All four of my favorites have put out new albums in the last year or two, and they're all fantastic.
1. Modest Mouse – Strangers To Ourselves.
2. PJ Harvey – The Hope Six Demolition Project.
3. Radiohead – A Moon Shaped Pool.
4. The Flaming Lips – Oczy Mlody.
>>73350191
This right here. And part of the problem is the sheer volume of music being released now because standards have declined and the fact that you can make something that sounds roughly as good as top-level stuff from the '60s from the comfort of your own home. So you still get the occasional amazing work but it's drowned in a sea of mediocrity and harder to find.
>>73350321
Reminder that both AnCo and Swans have been in the top 40 at one point in time.
For albums at least, I know that "my girls" made it in Australia though.
>>73349992
The growlers besides their last two albums
greatest shits and hung at hear are great
>>73350906
Most of these suck though there are better albums that have come out in this period
>>73349992
He's not wrong tho
PUP and Jeff Rosenstock if he likes punk.
Id love you to
>>73349992
if we fail...does that mean he's right?
/mu/ is in denial about the state of so called modern "music". Just you watch, in twenty years time, I'm sure most people will regard this era as the dark days of music, just like we regard music made in the 50s and 30s as trash. Sure, there are some exceptions. But the rule stands. Most music made today are of a lower caliber than any music made between the late 1950s and early 1990s.
Sorry for posting fantano but

>>73350099
this is incredible. thanks for posting this
>>73354335
That's because music is targeted towards children now. That's what youth culture is. It's been like that since the '60s. When culture will stop revolving around the youth, the quality of art will go upward.
>>73350906
Good list but I doubt any lewronggenerationist will use it to change their opinion
>>73354408
>>73354408
Its actually a pretty mediocre list and is indicative of the bad taste of people who insist on proving lewronggeneration wrong.
>>73354384
I'll never understand why this is the case. In my experience, most young people and teenagers don't pay for their music and are the demographic with the least disposable income. I thought (((record companies))) are all about profit making, which is partly why pop music have become so shitty and formulaic. It doesn't make financial sense to target the demographic least likely to pay for music.
>>73355919
What do you think mommy and daddy are for?
>>73349992
Note that Future dropped like 3 albums in a week
>>73350906
People who post stuff like this need to be told its not 2012 anymore, its five years later
>>73350097
He wanted to prove his friend wrong though...
>>73350101
Nigga what? There are new movements like every year. That's the nature of the internet. Things are played out in instants.
It's just harder for movements to become big big because they flash out.
>>73355919
>>73354384
music from the 90s though???
He's right
Pop, new wave, industrial, rock n roll - ALL DEAD
Instead we have that cancerous metalcore, blackmetal, new pop, mathcore and indie
>>73350860
Are you retarded? How would that save them the hassle when they already have a sax player ready to contribute to the music? Fucking self centered pleb autist.
>>73357862
nah mate, its either fads or barebones shit that dies quick because theres not much to build off
late 2000s had an actual general sound, identity, and direction and now there is no such thing. that is how these things work. theres a new resurgence roughly every decade or so.
>>73349992
>implying he's wrong
>>73358456
>the genre i like died
>I'm going to judge all new music by offshots of that dead genre
fucking stupid, anon
hip hop is the new rock, it's pretty damn obvious
>>73349992
he's right, there's just too much shit to filter through nowadays, with music being made by every fuccboi with utorrent.
>>73349992
Iceage, particularly New Brigade
