This is /mu/ nobody cares about individual solos. Whole album is all that matters and you can tell how good the whole album is by its cover.

Probably satire, but there's truth to it; if a label thinks the album is exceptional then they would most likely put more effort into the album art, especially in the 50's and 60's.

A good jazz solo should express some kind of emotion, but should do it with some kind of nuance, preferably several kinds of nuance. That can be technical abilities, melodic development, overall contour and phrase shape, interplay with the other musicians, or a whole host of other things. And it should all make sense together and have a dramatic shape. You could do all of those things but still play an ineffective solo if nothing relates to anything else.
Seamus Blake and David Kikoski are two players who come to mind for playing near perfect solos.
