>Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest icons of the 1960s. His death in 1970 still stands as one of the crucial events in the history of rock music. His work may be less important, as too many of his albums were below average. Hendrix was, after all, one of the most exploited artists of all times (many more albums were released after his death than during his lifetime). Hendrix made only two amazing albums: the first and the third, Are You Experienced (1967) and Electric Ladyland (1968). His greatest achievement was to coin a new guitar style, a style that amounted to a declaration of war against western harmony. Born at the crossroad between Chicago's blues, Memphis soul and Charlie Christian's jazz improvisation, Hendrix's style was an excruciating torture of tonal music. A black man, Hendrix always used the blues as the basis for his improvisation, but then used the whole human body to play and distort the sound of the guitar.

LUSTY

Did he actually mean "lusty negro attitudes" though, or did he fuck up and meant to say "lustful negro attitudes"? Because both make sense.

He means full of strength and vigour.
>>
>>73304073
Sounds right enough
>>
And yet he hates The Beatles...............
>>

White children smiles and songs about marriage and craetion of family through long years of faithfulness and intimacy are disgusting honestly. More lusty negro attitudes please.
>>
>declaration of war against Western harmony

lol he's an idiot
>>
>>73304714
Everything from jazz to soul and blues was pretty much black music versus white folk traditional music. Ironically it became a part of said culture as well

Well because Jimi Hendrix was worth the hype unlike the Beatles

It's translated from Italian dumbass
>>
>>73304839
But Debussy is argued by some to be a sort of template for early jazz, and plenty of early Bebop musicians like Charlie Parker took influence from classical music and studied it.

I wouldn't call it a war in any way, shape or form.

he could not be more wrong if he tried. hendrix's songwriting rivaled his guitar playing. he never "declared war" on western harmony or made an attempt to rebel against it. he used his style of guitar playing expand his songwriting.
>Hendrix's style was an excruciating torture of tonal music
lmao
scaruffi's still the only critic that matters

he's had many decades of musical experience and understands music and what songs borrow from other songs. He is an actual music critic, but people don't like him because his wording is awkward bc its translated from italian and he isnt as impressed by pitchfork core as /mu/ is.

Grimes, the project of Montreal-based singer-songwriter Claire Boucher, coined a surreal form of dance-pop on the cassette Geidi Primes(2010). Highlights are Feyd Rautha Dark Heart, in which her soft mantra cycles around a tribal hypnotic polyrhtyhm, and the syncopated clockwork of Vanessa, which also offers the most spectacular demo of her sensual/childish super-ethereal falsetto.

After repeating herself with less magic on Halfaxa (2011), Boucher shifted gear: Visions (2012) veered dangerously towards synth-pop of the 1980s, the fad of the moment (the tinkling and jumping Genesis, the sensual and subliminal Nightmusic, the Chinese-opera inspired Oblivion, the syncopated ballet Vowels = Space and Time).

AC/DC are one of the greatest heavy-metal bands of all times, and one of the most authentic acts of rock'n'roll. They embody the wild, rebellious quintessence of rock music like few other bands before punk-rock. They were the opposite of the intellectual singer-songwriter or the brainy progressive-rock or the decadent glam-rock of the 1970s: they were not the brain and not the heart but the guts of rock and roll. Rolling Stone Magazine gave a "zero" to several of their albums: the greatest compliment ever paid to them.

No he writes it in English. The Italian on his website is either someone translating it for him, because he supposedly lacks the time or written by him. All of his reviews are his writing in English though I believe.

Debussy is just a influence used outside of its context, usually for his cromaticism. French opera deeply influenced Beethoven, yet to point it out to discredit the originality of his work would be ridicolous. The same can be applied to people who try to give to much relevance to impressionists when it comes to the legacy of jazz.

>>73304714
I guess you know nothing about Western harmony then.
>>
axis was one of the earliest concept albums and combined rythm and lead guitar like noone before. the songwriting was great too. band of gypsys was very technical with a better bassist and a great drummer who was also a great singer. they were both better than his debut which had too many songs

Debussy is not an influence just because he used chromaticism, other important stuff like the whole pentatonic scale and the blues note was also used extensively by him.
And he wasn't the only influence, Stravinsky was another big one, particularly for bebop since Charlie Parker was obssessed with him.
Considering Hendrix a war against Western harmony is fucking retarded, and so is calling jazz black music.

>Each musician had complete freedom of interpretation.
>Beefheart uses the Delta blues as a pretext, but dismembers its structure, rhythm, harmony, tonality and melody, and then reassembles the pieces randomly, injecting it with free-jazz and casual improvisation. Beefheart is the first musician to perform an avant garde operation of such capacity without the least intellectual pomposity

Umm....

THIS. Scaruffi is shoehorning a narrative to push his "western melodies are shit" mindset.

Hendrix helped cementating the idea of fixed harmony, or harmony as a short sequence that is just there for the background. Voodoo Chile is quite literally 4 chords played over and over again for 11 minutes: when you compare it with the Western tradition Hendrix is inferior even when compared to the least talented minuet writers of the 18th century.

Yet when talking about Hendrix, this seems to go beyond the point. Sure, Voodoo Chile is only 4 chords repeated for 11 minutes, but harmonic development was never part od this aesthetic in the first place.

This IS a declaration if war against Western harmony, for it goes against every single one of its principles, even the conceptual ones: this harmonic point of view does not make sense in any of the styles of our canon, it simply goes against all of them.

kek i fucking love piero

it doesn't though. western harmony doesn't just refer to art music. it's our chord system and how notes and chords work with each other. it includes functional and nonfunctional harmony. but even in art music, composers still sometimes used a limited amount of chords to create their pieces. pachelbel's canon only uses four different chords for six minutes, but layers different elements to add variation and musical interest. voodoo chile uses soloing and dynamic shifts to create it's musical interest. also, a declaration of war would mean that the artist is at least attempting to break away from this system. if hendrix was trying to make this bold statement that and reject the western system of chords and how they relate, he wouldn't have created songs like the wind cries mary and bold as love, which are just a beautifully crafted pop song. even his experiments into noisier stuff and groundbreaking production were in the context of songs that follow western conventions. this is just another example of scaruffi trying to force his worldview and need for meta narrative in music onto artists. he needs to imagine some sort of rebellion or unique authenticity to be interested because he has a shallow appreciation for these artists.
