From my reading in between the lines of the situation, there weren't any proper contracts signed when Grimes first partnered up with and started releasing music via Arbutus Records (remember, this was originally just a group of friends helping out friends.) And between Grimes' rocketing to superstardom in 2012 and her subsequent falling out with them in late 2013 (due to crappy artist management imo) Arbutus' head honchos clearly have taken legal advantage of the situation to make sure that they get the biggest cut possible from any sales of her earlier records going forward.

Afaik neither Geidi Primes, Halfaxa, or Darkbloom were ever meant to be sold for a profit (all three were originally released as free downloads off of mediafire or Arbutus' website) - which is clearly not the "smart" thing to have done from a traditional legal standpoint. The fact that Arbutus' has ceased all free distribution of them and is currently working the "re-issues without the artist's involvement" angle with them just indicates that they've lawyered up over it.
