Synthpop has its origins in industrial, art pop and new wave, Depeche Mode being the best example

Synthpop: Pop music built around electronic instruments programmed to emulate the sound of analog instruments.
Electropop: Pop music built around electronic instruments programmed to sound like electronic instruments.

In which case, Art Angels would technically be Electropop (unlike the rest of Grimes' previous albums) since all the analog instruments (violins, guitars, etc.) were actual physical instruments, and just the things which openly sound like synths are actually synths.
