Classic heavy metal (including all "blues metal"), thrash metal, and death metal are all fine, no questions asked.
Power metal and prog metal, you might get weird looks but people will just think you're a nerd, otherwise it's fine. Melodeath probably goes in here too.
Black metal would get you weird looks in another way, like I actually would be weirded out by a 40 year old who listens to black metal. I wouldn't think very much of it though, and BM is in the process of being normalized anyway (thanks Deafheaven). You definitely won't be alone by the time you're old.
Doom metal is somewhere between heavy and black metal, depending on how traditional it is.
The only shit I would laugh at you for liking at 40 years old is metalcore. There's no defense for that.
>tfw never listened to metal
d-do I have to listen to it in order to grow out of it? or am I still a pleb?

Great sage of metal wisdom: what say you of that chaotic sub-genre of infinite nonsense: "Djent"?
>>73223406
That didn't happen to me
