Built to Spill are better than Modest Mouse. Even Built to Spill's "meh" albums (You In Reverse, There Is No Enemy) are better than Modest Mouse's alleged "masterpieces" (TLCW, TM&A).

They don't even sound the same. Their compared because they're from the same place and are both white guys with guitars. Just look at the people who compare them to Pavement and GBV who are miles different than both.
Modest Mouse is borderline post-punk on their first 3 albums, Built to Spill is somewhere in between prog and pop.
