Explain the Chance the Rapper hype to me. He seems like an inaudible mumble rapper to me and his face is weird. Why is he so popular?
he has a cool, unique style and Acid Rap is pretty good with its gospel fusion which sounds pretty epic. I don't think he sounds like a mumble rapper.
He has indie hype despite not really being indie, he's a non-confrontational easy to praise christian rapper but he's oh so very boring
he represents a lot of what chicago hip hop used to stand for. people like that he's conscious (read: appealing to whites). and he's kind of taking the torch from kanye in a lot of ways. he is objectively a talented rapper who's capable of making hooks. his beats/production definitely need work, but he can coast on the 3-4 smash singles he's had and tour on the "true fan" stuff for the next year or so.
if he can't make an impact with this neo-soul thing he's going for by then, he'll go away. if i were him i'd try to venture into new territory though. his shit with Nosaj Thing (Paranoia on Acid Rap) showed he could be forward looking, personable, truthful, lyrical, and massively popular at the same time.
i challenge anyone to tell me why all those factors could produce a bad artist in hip hop in 2017
