Rap is on the radio though.
>>
Classical is boring for pretentious elitists
Jazz is for neckbeards
Rock is varied and needs 782 subgenres, jazz and classical don't
Trap is the best music of this generation
Kanye is a musical genius
>>
>>73170473
I don't see how that changes what I stated. Country is too. People choose to avoid a certain genre on the radio which is where "I listen to just about everything but <genre here>" comes from

"oh you like rock? have you heard of (extremely famous band that simply isn't on the radio)"
"yeah I like some of the weird old stuff, like (most famous band from a few decades ago)"
especially the ones you find that have made marginal attempts to get into music and have essentially sat on the first hip things they've been told are in.

Normies that like Aerosmith, Queen, Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin, are fine.

the pretend non-normies who like Death Grips, Kanye, Fleet Foxes, Burzum, Grimes, they're always the fucking worst.
>>
>>73170629
*only thing worse than normies
>>
>>73170629
>Normies that like Aerosmith, Queen, Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin, are fine
No, these ones are actually the worst because they're very close-minded in their tastes. The "pretend" ones are at least willing to give new things a chance.
>>
>>73170629
THIS
>>
"where are the words? this is just background music"
>>
>>73170666
>they're very close-minded in their tastes
you do realize some people don't care about developing their taste and there's nothing wrong with that?
>>
>>73169937

I would give anything a chance and see if I like it. Am I a normie?
>>
>>73171126
I've dealt with someone who listened to only classic rock, expressed interest in wanting to develop their taste, but could only latch onto new artists if they sounded like or were related to classic rock.
>>
>>73171197
Ok, and? How is that bad? Unless they're proclaiming superiority - I don't see what's the problem.
>>
>>73171219
I had never really listened to classic rock before, yet I found out that I was pretty receptive of that person's music and was able to add a few of his artists to my own tastes. But I wasn't able to get him to like any of my music. I'm not saying it's bad that it worked out that way, but it's just a little frustrating to me.
>>
>>73171290
Sure, I can relate. Those people are not the worst though. What's really scary/hard to grasp for me is when people have 0 interests whatsoever (enough to explore and develop their skills / taste), not just in music.
>>
>you heard of led zeppelin?
>they are so good, listen to stairway to heaven or the immigrant song
>>
>>73170666
Hard to say. The lewronggenwration fags are insufferable because they think music died in the 70s.

The pretentious r/music crowd is the worst because they think they are patrician listening to Radiohead and Kanye and a couple famous indie albums. They act so smug and they show you their chart and it's all Radiohead sprinkled with mainstream 90s albums like ratm and extremely mainstream indie albums like arcade fire.
>>
>>73170459
Yeah if they say this, they definitely don't listen to "everything" and probably just listen to buttrock
>>
>>73171413
Do people still pull the "wrong generation" thing after high school? It was alright to do that in middle school, and already barely acceptable by high school, but I can't see people still doing that in their 20's and beyond.
>>
>>73171126

>>
>>73171126
there's something very wrong with it when they judge the shit out of other music because their understanding is narrow, like when they laugh at free jazz or any kind of experimental music and say "this isn't music" or they think that classical is "outdated" just because they have no appreciation of it. Not learning means staying ignorant, and ignorance leads to saying/doing ignorant shit.
>>
>>73171513
>color preference says a lot about a person
Get with the times. To stick to one branch of music for almost your whole life is a geezer thing to do.
>>
>>73170475
this
>>
>I listen to anything except classical and jazz
>>
>if top 40 is so simple, make a top 40 hit and become famous

fuck these delusional shitheads so fucking much
musically simple =/= easy to make
anyone with any knowledge of making pop music whatsoever knows well that catchy hooks n shit are musically simple but hard as fuck to write well
saying that it's relatively simple musically is not saying that it doesn't take considerable skill to do well, just as it takes skill to make aesthetically pleasing minimalist art
>>
>>73171647
you can also try at the drive in
>>
>>73171681
So you judge them in response because of ignorance? You don't have to take their point of view seriously, especially considering the fact that you know they're clueless.

I agree it's not cool, but as I've mentioned earlier - it's okay to be close-minded as long as they're willing to accept that tastes are different

>>73171736
Some people have different hobbies that take up a lot of their time, so they don't even care about music that much. A scientist can criticize you for not learning how life works (and subsequently for not helping out others with your knowledge). He'd be wrong just as you are, but at least his point would be more valid than yours.
>>
>>73171803
That actually might have a higher chance of working. Good rec.
>>
>>73170629

>>

this is actually true, though
>>
>>73171809
>it's okay to be close-minded
Then it's also okay to remind them how close minded they are, and call them out when they say something stupid
>>
>>73171920
>The 90s was the best decade for music
>Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots... the list goes on
>>
>>73170629
>Normies that like Aerosmith, Queen, Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin, are fine.

Who makes this shit up? These are the worst type of people to talk about music with. They're so closed minded that if a band wasn't popular in 70's or 80's they don't give them a listen. They already think they have the superior taste. At least the pretend nok normies would be more open minded when it comes to music.
>>
>>73172002
You literally just said the same thing I said: >>73170666
>>
>>73171964
Oh yeah, definitely. I'm just saying we're all kind of close-minded in some way, so no need to take those people too seriously. And absolutely do call them out on their bullshit.
>>
>>73170741
i've never heard anyone say that
>>
>>73172041

I have, spend some time with teenage girls and you will hear something like this. They can't listen to anything without vocals
>>
I tried to get my close-minded normie friend into Violent Femmes a while ago. Recently, I saw that he was listening to Blister in the Sun on Spotify. I was pretty excited to see that, so I asked him if the band finally grew on him or it finally clicked. He said, "No, it's just that they play this a lot on [insert classic rock radio station here]."

I hope now some of you can understand why this shit is so frustrating.
>>
I love these threads because they are basically cringe threads every time. You guys get so much joy for having a better taste in music than someone else it's just one big circle jerk.
>>
>>73169956

A friend of mine is very competitive so, once he wanted to show off he knew more about music than me. (He didn't, but I didn't felt like arguing) So he says:
"Oh, I listen to everything, EVERYTHING, EXCEPT The XX. That's the only artist I don't like."

So, then I show him some shoegaze:
"Okay, so I also don't like weird music."

I'm actually a scientist and the only thing that bothers me when someone has absolutely no interests in anything. I have many hobbies that I'm really interested, including music, however I'm not interested in paintings.
It's okay if someone has a cursory knowledge or interest in something, but when they have no interest in anything I always assume they are either shallow or depressed.

I hate people like this because it's so ironic. I was in the poetry club in college, and basically the club meetings were just us taking turns reading stuff we liked from books/finding readings of stuff we liked on YouTube, and one time I asked the club adviser (an English lit professor) if I could play a song. He said yes, so I played The Highwayman by Phil Ochs. When the song ended the adviser gave me this hard-ass stare and said "Now, anon, what in God's name does that have to do with poetry?"
The song is LITERALLY Phill Ochs putting a famous poem to music.

One common thing that kinda pisses me off are millenials (nowadays, mostly teenagers/twenty-somethings) who just listen to hip hop. These people's entire libraries/spotifies are just filled with hip hop with maybe some RnB or some hip hop influenced spinoffs.

I don't listen to either of them, but I'm assuming country is basically the commercialized version of folk, following more conventional song structures and drawing inspiration from other popular genres (e.g. blues), while folk is derived from traditional music that was prevalent especially in rural communities (not exclusive to America), which is very different from the modern, more experimental "folk" music people usually talk about here.

Again, don't take my word for it.

My dad was skeptical about coming with me to a DSO show, but he was curious because he works with a Deadhead; now he's a Jerry Garcia Band fan (they played mostly JGB at the show). Hell, my first DSO show (different one) got me listening to a show almost everyday.

Yeah, she's Indian. It wasn't the drums/world music, Zakir Hussain, Ravi Shankar (she didn't know who they were, actually) kind of stuff. It was more of the Bollywood-pop Indian music that didn't do much for me. She only danced to classical Indian music; she didn't listen to it, surprisingly.
I honestly don't mind the "normie" modern rock; I sometimes listen to it if I'm in the mood. But yeah, every girl besides her that I've dated listens to the typical modern rock/"indie" music. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but some variety would be nice.

Honestly, I want to get more into Indian classical and ragas and stuff, since I'm big on psychadelic and metal music that's influenced by that.

I dunno, I'm still not a fan of it but I don't hate it venomously like a lot of people both and on and off /mu/ seem to

Beyond Mickey Hart and Zakir, I don't know much. I haven't been too interested in it. Maybe down the road I'll look into it.

it's only hard in like a cold, clinical manner. Top 40 is literally just taking advantage of the human psyche to create music that's completely pleasing to the ear in a casual context, and is also catchy.
While it is "hard" to create a hit, it's only because the majority of those hits are scientifically curated to be good. It's like a Call of Duty release; sure, it feels great to play and is enjoyable, but it lacks soul or nuance.
It's the corporate answer to art; it's made to sell and nothing more. I sound cynical, and I know that there are a multitude of exceptions, but just because pop music is not objectively bad does not mean it's worth our attention any more than a fidget spinner is.

You think that's bad?

Try being from one of the most backward, rural-ass areas in Brazil. You'd see your Mediterranean country as a freaking cultural hub in comparison.

I know I have pleb taste. My friends always call me a hipster for liking """indie""" music even though my tastes are hardly obscure. I hate that word so much :(

Indie is short for independent. However, the term is horribly misused.

My old bosses Husband was a "rock star" who fronted a shitty ass 80s hair metal band. They claimed Guns and Roses stole their songs, and she claimed that he inspired grunge. Whenever me and my co-workers talked about music we had to do it quietly or with her not around, because she'd always butt in.

When she asked me what kind of music I liked I told her I listened to alot of punk. She said she loved Sex Pistols, The Clash, Misfits; and that she loved Sid Viscous. I then started talking about other entry level band (Bad Brains, Dead Kennedy, Minor Threat, Descendents). She didn't know any of them
>mfw she's just a trend hopper "OMG SO PUNK"
