Also, it's not that hard to discover new music. Just look at /mu/ charts threads and sharethreads, read music blogs, check out rateyourmusic lists of other users, ask for recommendations based on music that you like etc. Eventually you'll get in the groove.

It's his job to know the latest in music so he's probably established various sources.

But it takes some time to get in the loop of things. Finding some artists you like, get them on social media, and staying updated by those means is one way. I know Swans/Michael Gira page likes to upload their favorite songs. It's fun to look up artists that influenced your favorite artists too.

Personally I also browse /mu. I rummage through the shit that it is now and tend to find a thing or two but now I've gotten to a point where I've become more or less self-sufficient in finding music for myself.
