In some ways, Johnny Rotten. He wasn't a sellout, but the band he was in was used as nothing more than a marketing scene by their manager to sell clothes. After he left, he started up PiL, which was an experimental fuck you to Malcolm McLaren and consumerism. And they were so much better than the Pistols, it's incomparable.

overall though I don't think it makes sense to equate commercial music with selling out, or to think that you have to be one or the other. plenty of people are capable of doing both simultaneously
