Is vinyl worth it over CDs if I want to start a physical collection of my favorite albums?

It just seems like a very expensive hobby, but CD's are dirt cheap and can be played straight from my PC. On the other hand, vinyl has big beautiful artwork, generally retains their value, and seems preferably better for a physical music collection.

Also, is there any turntable that's not over $200 that's not entirely shit? I guess if you go cheap you get cheap, but it seems expensive enough as it is. Definitely not for poorfags.

wax cylinders or gtfo

CDs dont have that shitty cracking and popping and are much cheaper. They take up less space require less maintenance and you can play them in your car. CDs are better you cannot deny this
>>
The value thing is bullshit. If the albums rare then it's rare. End of story. Format is inherently meaningless. Unless it's a locked groove. Unless the album is only available on vinyl then locked grooves are literally the only reason to buy vinyl. The artwork thing is bullshit too imo. If you care that much then you need to find an original print or something.

Every record player except an Rp-117 Is literal shit. Locked grooves with an RP-117 and everything else is literal garbage.

cracking and popping is from shit records with dust all over them. cds defeat the purpose of owning physical. stream+vinyl = ideal

You can work out a cheap setup for records if you scour secondhand shops.

But yeah vinyl isn't worth it if you don't have the money. I do it mainly because my only hobbies are in music, and it's a cool hobby to have.
>>
Buy whatever is cheaper. The price is the most important factor. If you're buying only new vinyl for $20-30 each you are a sucker.

To be honest, I have lots of music in physical formats but these days it no longer seems worth it. Even discounting pirating options, there's no way to justify buying even cheapo records or CDs regularly vs. just having a premium Spotify account. It just doesn't make sense anymore.

6 more months for Tangible Rays to get my $7. I'm locked out on my phone at home but I can still listen at work. After a whole year from release I'm not gonna give a shit if I'm locked out on both.

I save vinyl purchases for albums I already know I love dearly, or things I want to try and get autographed. Autographed records make for a great collector's item. Vinyl doesn't have too many convenience or aesthetic benefits to CDs, but the artwork is definitely the one thing it has going for it. An autographed record looks much cooler than an autographed CD most times. Frame the autographed cover on your wall, keep the record in the sleeve on your shelf, it'll look amazing.

Otherwise, CDs are much more convenient. A working good working CD player is not hard to find at all, your speaker setup really being the only big thing you'll need to work on, if you prefer speakers to headphones. CDs are cheap and convenient, even being able to be easily imported to your computer so you can bring your music with you on your laptop or MP3 player. They're smaller than records too, so if you accumulate a ton overtime, they'll be easier to store than a record. If you're building up your collection and want to look for "essential albums", I'd recommend checking the used or clearance CD section of your local record store (if you have one). You should find some good titles in there for under 5 dollars each. Stuff like Homogenic, Yerself Is Steam, Odelay and whatever else that alot of record stores have a bunch of leftover copies of laying around. Goodwills are a great place to find the occasional gem, too. Once you get enough titles you're familiar with, you can even venture into crate digging for CDs, pick up stuff you've never heard of for a dollar or so and give it a try. That's what I do, and I love it

It's a double edge sword. The personal touch is naturally very important to me but for example I did sell this for $40 recently.

>your signature
I guess I misread this. No, one of them wrote my name.

I didn't mean it as your name literally, I was referring more towards the artist wrote their name over the album's title. I'm unfamiliar with that band so I'm not sure if that's an autograph or your name. Sorry for the confusion

I've also never really liked the idea of having my name made out to me on an album. Maybe I'll have a kid one day and they'll end up inheriting that, or maybe I'll decide to sell some of my autographed merchandise one day. It'll sell for a lot less if it has my name on it, and it'll be weird for my kid to have something with their now dead parent's name on it, unless they have the same name as me, which would also be weird.

I'm pretty sure she wrote my name over the title on purpose to prevent me from selling it. I am rather suspicious.

Vinyl has a lot more chance of appreciating in value if you're looking at it economically.
Honestly though, just collect whatever you enjoy. If you like vinyl as a format, go ahead. There's no point overthinking it when pretty much all physical media in 2017 is extra to requirements anyway.
