This album came out almost four years ago. What are your thoughts on it?
>>
I really like it, but I also know fuck-all about black metal.
>>
None of these early-20s shitheads ln this board are going to have any idea what the fuck that album is. /mu/ is all about k-pop and waifus now
>>
>>72897769
It's a great album that unleashed a plague of poor-quality blackgaze and backpackers
>>
>>72897769
It's so good I never listened to it.
>>
The Pecan Tree > Sunbather > Dream House > Vertigo
>>
>>72897769
It's not a very good album.
>>
>>72897822
I really don't think this is true, I think most people who post regularly were here when that album came out.
>>
>>72897845
I'd say
Pecan > DH = Vertigo > Sun Bat Her
I don't know, the title track doesn't really have anything special going on. All of the other ones have very distinctive sounds and vibes to them.
>>
>>72897822
Okay, grandpa. This album gets posted like every week still.
>>
>>72897822
I'm in my early 20's and I've posted since 2011

beautiful
>>
>>72897862
The last movement on Sunbather is one of the best parts on the whole album
>>
Im going to sound like a Redditor, but it is still the most emotionally devastating album Ive ever listened to. Its my favorite album of all-time, but it is still very painful to listen to. I dont know if Im explaining it correctly, but whatever. Listening to it reminds me of how much Ive fucked up my life.

the album was discussed/shit-posted to oblivion about a year ago or less, just because it's not anymore doesnt mean people dont know it, people just moved on we already have enough albums that are discussed here every day probably since this board was created, and we dont need another one of those

It's a shame backpackers and memes have kind of crippled the potential for discussion, because I agree with you. The lyrics are fucking heavy, and the passionate music carries them perfectly.
One of the only albums with completely indiscernible lyrics where I've still memorized every word.

While there is a pretty clear formula to the songwriting, which results in most of the songs sounding very similar, it's overall a very well made and consistent album. Dream House still stands for me as one of the best tracks of the decade.

Unfortunately the obnoxious shilling/memeing, the backlash towards said shilling, and hatred from black metal purists made discussing the album more of a shit flinging contest than anything else. Furthermore, as many people have already said in this thread, the album spawned a horde of terrible rip-off bands.

I still think it's really good. It's grown on me a lot over the past two years especially. It's formulaic but it hits that formula really well and attacked blackgaze from a much different position that it's predecessors.
>>72897845
Dream House is easily the best song on the album and one of the best songs the band has ever done.
>>72897862
Idk, the repeated "I gripped the wheel" hits me hard every time I hear it. Plus that song gives you more insight into the overall theme of the album.
>>72898248
>it feels like harsh indie rock with screamo vocals
I do agree with this, and that's why I feel like it was so well received in indie circles and hated so much in more metal circles. At the same time though, I feel like a lot of people tried to interpret it as a black metal album and missed what it was going for. Deafheaven started off as a grindcore band, not a black metal band, and that definitely has an influence on it.
>>72898249
You completely missed what it was trying to do.
>>72898348
Bad if taken as shoegaze, bad if taken as metal, good if taken as a combination of both. The shoegaze influences aren't even that apparent. Blackgaze is more of a marketing term than a genre.

The only reason why this album gets so much hate is because of the popularity it got. If Pitchfork and other cancerous sites wouldn't have written articles about how it's the new Black Metal thing and that it's a Metal masterpiece, no one would have given a shit about it. I listen to a shit load of Black Metal and I seriously don't consider this album being a part of the genre. It's simply an unique album that should be appreciated as a music album and not a metal album or whatever. This said, I liked this album and it's one of my favorites of all time and I don't get why people get triggered when we mention the band's name.

the musicianship and the songwriting are all just really great. fuck the haters!!

lmfao the lyrics are cringy as fuck and by far the worst part of the whole album
>>
It's really got quite an odd vibe about it, by all rights I should be disgusted yet the album itself and the first track especially drag me in
>>
It's ok. Revolutionary, but not exactly ground breaking if that makes sense.
>>
>>72897769
One of my favorite albums ever. Still as fresh today as it was when it came out. I've always been a metal guy but also always rejected black metal, and this album made me dive deep into the the world of black metal and I'm sure as hell glad it did.

The title track is one of my favorite things ever. The couple times I've seen them live are some of the best shows I've ever been to as well.

I've never really hugely into metal, but did I always like the metal/post-rock/shoegaze stuff like Alcest or some Circle of Ouroburos. Sunbather is like the most well executed version of that to me.

Bull fucking shit. I flatly said I'm not really into metal, but that specific genre blend works for me. Pretty big difference between saying "I listen to all music except 2 of the most general genre archetypes that exist!"

Whatever, you're gonna sperg out on this either way.
>>

> Pretty big difference between saying "I listen to all music except 2 of the most general genre archetypes that exist!"
i know, i'm saying they're both cringeworthy and misguided cliches on the same level
>>
>>72900527
But there's a huge different between saying "this genre is objectively awful" and "I like when this genre is mixed with this other genre"
>>
>>72898937
>I seriously don't consider this album being a part of the genre
I mean, I can understand why you wouldn't want the black metal world to be associated in any way with the p4k faggotry (I don't either) but Sunbather's very much a black metal album at its core. The guitars and vocals are unorthodox but all of the standard BM elements are there in some form.
>>72899258
In all seriousness, what do you consider good lyrics? I love the confessional quasi-emo lyrics and the blunt poetic feel to them.

blast beats and tremolo picking doesn't make something black metal. sunbather lacks any similarities to black metal beyond those. it's definitely "blackened" but not full on black metal

This. 10/10 album that unfortunately brought a whirlwind of knockoffs.

It's Nirvana all over again.
>>
If you want my true, honest opinion, it's beautiful. It's actually nearly perfect aside for the worn-out religious field recording cliche and the fact that the last track lazily fades out rather than including a definite end.
Otherwise, Sunbather took a genre that had been stale and unchanged for decades and introduced a little variation. Yes, I know, the whole "blackgaze" thing had already been done by the time they showed up but imo they were the first to do it really, really well. Really brought out blackgaze's potential.

It's a solid 9/10 from me. But I would never say that in real life, or with a trip on.
>>
i avoided the album when all the initial hype came on. but then I caught them live (Liturgy were opening for them, which I like alot) and they played a great set. i bought the record and listened to it and it was... boring.

i'd definitely see them live again because they have a great stage presence but I have no desire to listen to the actual album.
>>
It's not even really metal. It's just really, really aggressive shoegaze/emo/post rock. This is good.

Metalfags always have to ruin everything, though. It's not kvlt enough.
