Guided By Voices is the greatest band of all time.
Robert Pollard understands the human condition.

this is why gbv and pollard have been my favorite musicians ever since i first heard them and it's the main argument which i've used to sell people on their music through the years
i've never heard any other band which has as much empathy for the world as gbv does
also, tobin sprout isn't given as much credit as he deserves

Do I have to be a small town working class alcoholic in order to "get" Guided by Voices or something?
I could never get into them for some reason.

They're amazing but only their lo-fi material is. Many people try to give good credit to their rock stuff after under the stars but it's all bad and doesn't have the magic from their early to mid 90's releases. The appeal just mostly comes from the lo-fi recordings and accidental errors that are left onto the music making them sound like demos of songs right before you record them properly in the studio. This coupled with lyrics that step into oddball psychedelia and unique personality into power pop tunes.

the songs are great because pollard is an amazing songwriter with a gift for impeccable melody

GBV pretty much IS small town alcoholic working class depression translated into the pop/rock song format so yeah, you do.

Too bad they never put out a consistently good album.
They have great songs here and there but all their records are ruined by pointless noodling and shitty lo fi experiments that flop.

pretty sure all you have to do is get into gbv is enjoy killer licks and memorable melodies. pretty straight forward rock/pop/folk/punk. great stuff, love gbv

bee thousand is consistently good from start to finish and one of the best albums of the 90s. id also say under the bushes under the stars is consistently great from start to finish. i don't think you necessarily have to love every song on their albums to love gbv, their albums are like a buffet, if you don't like one thing move on.
