Can we all agree to change the content of the acronym "IDM" from "intelligent" to "indie"?

It makes more sense, it's way less pretentious, and I can describe the music of Autechre/Boards/Aphex etc, to my normie friends without having to call it "EDM" and without sounding like an utter fucking snob.

Thanks.

>whines about things being pretentious
>calls his friends normies
w0w
>>
>yeah i looooooove idm bro
>aphex twin, autechre, boards of canada, the list could go on.....
>>
>>72888114
Well yeah, they're normies in the specific domain of music.

I'm a normie too in other stuff. E.g. One of them loves to cook and knows lots of stuff about it but i'm a total normie when it comes to cooking.

Nothing wrong with being a normie.
>>
>>72888114
>whines about things being pretentious
>calls a genre intelligent
>>
>>72888144
I'm not calling it intelligent that's what it stands for. That's what it is currently called.
>>
>>72888133
Never said I loved it lmao
>>
>tfw the nature of genre naming has cursed this genre with a pretentious name for all eternity
>tfw even if genre names weren't so set-in-stone once they catch on, nobody has come up with an alternative that truly describes the music better without also having the same implications (ie braindance)
I think we gotta learn to accept the pretense
>>
>>72888152
I didn't mean you personally call it that.
>>
>>72888214
What's wrong with OP's suggestion. Works just as well as "intelligent"
>>
>>72888086
>Intelligent Dance Music
>not intelligent, nor danceable
This is most likely the worst genre name.
>>
>>72888271
It does not describe the music very well in my opinion. Even ignoring the fact that IDM artists can be signed to labels, "Indie" as a genre has a certain sound/mood to it that I don't think matches up with IDM very well at all.
>>
>>72888314
adm - autistic dance music
>>
What about 'experimental dance music'?

We could call it ED - god dammit
>>
>>72888086
IDM was initially referred to as ELM
Electronic Listening Music
>>
>>72888330
Honestly that fits better than indie dance music... I'm half-tempted to shed the association with dance altogether though.
>>
>>72888350
Annoyingly vague but I could get behind this
>>
Boards of Canada is not IDM
>>
>>72888330
I'd be hesitant to describe an album like RDJA as "ambient"

>>72888086
Post-Dance is the most accurate descriptor I've heard. The single connecting thread is taking elements from dance music and making non-dance music with it
>>
>>72889035
i like this one
>>
>>72889035
This.If i have to describe the genre to a non electronic listener friend I always use the rock/post-rock simil.
>>
>>72888143
this is fair. everyone's an expert in one thing or another. i have no idea what most tech terminology means, so by that standard i'm just as normie as people who think Radiohead is good

Experimental Electronic Music

EEM

but that could imply shit like stockhausen, progressive electronic, musique concrete, etc... idm refers to music that is based off of electronic dance styles

something wrong there?

>squarepusher, venetian snares, amon tobin, the list goes on...

like honestly those 6 are the only ones worth mentioning
>>
How about not using dumb umbrella terms and call them by the genres they are.

>Autechre
Techno

>Aphex Twin
Techno/breaks

>Squarepusher
Future Jazz

>Boards of Canada
Downtempo
>>
>>72889277
Imagine a /mu/ where people bothered to grasp the 6 main contemporary genres and their subs instead of umbrellas, there might be some actual variety or something.
>>
>>72888143
I think you should try to expand your vocabulary
>>
>>72888133
Problem is, every artist EXCEPT these 3 are miles behind. This is coming from someone who has spent a lot of time digging into underground electronic music.

Brothomstates and Illkae are some of my personal favorites, but even those guys are borrowing heavily.
>>
>>72889277
>Autechre
>Techno
wew lad
>>
>>72889547
Care to explain why they are not techno?
>>
>>72889547
yes
>>
>Can we all agree

lol
>>
>>72889533
>This is coming from someone who has spent a lot of time digging into underground electronic music.
>still calls it all ''electronic music''

further proof you have no clue.
>>
>>72889533
idk where you're looking there are a ton of guys that do new aphex twin better than he does it himself

>>
>>72889651
Still waiting on you to explain...
>>
>>72889651
inorite, techno is EDM for pleb normies, Autechre are like, sooooooooo experimental and intelligent
>>
>>72889035
Seconded
>>
>>72889651
yeah its abstract techno
>>
>>72889634
are you fucking daft?

>>72889642
Nah that's pretty boring desu. I you really want a good contender to the title of better modern aphex, you should check out datach'i.

>>
Why is everyone so against using the genre names?

It just confuses the fuck out of me. Techno, house, breaks, UKGarage, trance, downtempo and then subs thereof.

Why do you need to make up these new umbrella terms?
>>
>>72889725
>IDM
>make up new umbrella terms

nigga
>>
>>72889712
I'm an expert on string music.

King Crimson, Burzum, Bob Marley, the list goes on...
>>
>>72889742
OPs point and the whole thread has been arguments for a new label when >>72889277 are already more valid.

>>
I cba, seriously, try exploring by genres and subgenres instead of humongous fucking umbrella terms or retarded buzzwords like EDM and IDM and discover a fucking huge world of music this board never touches on.

>>72889882
Especially as they're the first to say the just make fucking dance music.
