The 'Original Chad'. You have to admit, they're not that bad when you're drinking.

if you have to drink to enjoy them...
yeah but if you're having the good kind of drunk time, anything can be "not that bad"
Why do they get such a bad rep though? Doesn't seem fair. Is it the 'dad rock' stigma, or 'cause they're sort of pseudo-grunge?

It's not that Nickelback has zero pleasurable songs. It has more to do with the general ambiance. Their songs all deal with one-dimensional emotions like "nostalgia about your school" or "thinking about your ex," or inchoate philosophies like "what if we all stopped thinking only about ourselves for a minute?" These are things we already covered almost literally 100 years ago in popular music and are not given any sort of meaningful spin or iterative quality.
The music is the same way. There's a catchy song here and there, but nothing that'll turn your head, no melody you haven't heard 5 times, and the production is just obnoxious, you get Chad's enhanced-for-raspiness vocals over guitar with no nuance or imagination, just loudness.

People hate Nickelback because they're popular. That doesn't mean they're good, but they're no different than plenty of bands those same people will love.
You don't get to be as successful as they are if everyone hates you.
It's the epitome of radio rock, processed, polished rock. Nothing exciting nor substance to it.
