After watching Whiplash and Birdman, I've decided to buy a drum and start learning.
I play the guitar and the piano, but I am new to drumming, however, I have managed to replicate some jazz sound with my ride cymbal and quarter note with my snare drum.
Any tips for a new drummer?
Start off practicing basic patterns on the snare and then include other parts of the kit when you are confident.

count.
aloud.
The best advice my drum teacher gave me was "Don't focus so much on counting in your head. Think about the sound you wanna create and create it, then the timing will naturally come in your head."

I don't there are any shortcuts, just practice pretty simple patterns for a while, don't worry about swinging and sounding like jazz until you have the basics down.

Also forgot to add - practice rudiments. They're extremely hard but help with dynamic control and speed when you're actually behind the kit. Get a $10 practice pad off Amazon so you can practice anywhere anytime.

If you haven\t already: check out Drumeo. They have tons of hour-long lessons by top tier drummers for free on Youtube. Here's Benny Greb's lesson:

Learn to improvise as soon as you can play a beat - find some mates to play with and just jam 'till you turn into fucking strawberries. And remember to take breaks because you play like shit when you don't want to play.
Approach with patience and expect slow progress to begin with if you don't have any previous musical background. Don't be afraid to build up a beat from scratch and go slowly - this can be what it takes to build muscle memory. Start off only playing the bass drum part, then when you feel solid on that bring in one more element and so on.
Practise regularly even if it's just one whatever surface is nearest. Once you're relatively comfortable with a single stroke roll (left right left right), try and get into rudiments, a simple one being the paradiddle -
(RLRR LRLL) You can find others online.
These will quickly start to build independence in your hands and give you creativity and flexibility.
Good luck - learning to drum is on of the best musical foundations you can get.

Also forgot to add -
Play along to music you like (being reasonable about your expectations and ability) and with friends to make it rewarding and enjoyable. Just went back and read your post about the guitar and piano so i'm sure you're aware of this anyway.
