how long did it took you to learn? have you ever consulted with any other guitar player?
Youtube is your best friend. Get a guitar and start there. Its literally that simple and youll be able to get good if you dedicate enough time to it.
Yeah. Absolutely.
Don't spend a shit ton on your first guitar. Get something cheap and sturdy, and get on with it till you feel you need to switch.
Assuming you want to be serious about this, be mindful of your actual skill, don't end up like these fuckers who just play the a pentatonic scale up and down while giving a footjob to a delay pedal and believe they're Jimi Hendrix. Constantly explore new music, constantly discover and listen to new guitarists in genres you'd perhaps never thought of listening to. Constantly compare yourself to them, and try to measure up. It's not going to be easy and it's not going to be quick, but it will get you somewhere.
Of course, if you just want to play the a pentatonic scale up and down and set fire to your guitar, more power to you. I'm just saying. You wanna get real good, you gotta put real work into it.
Finally, most important of all, *be constant*. Practice first thing in the morning, do it every day or every other day or once a week, long as you keep doing it. You will never learn if you aren't constant, or you will learn very, very slowly.

Taught myself simultaneous to my physics course,
you learn everything you ever learn in the first year
The rest is honing those skills.
Buy an acoustic for the first year, all tone comes from your fingers not the amp
Buy Classical nylon string if you wanna play lead
Buy a Steel String if you wanna play trad folk or hard blues

this is a fairly decent beginner's resource.

and this is a great one for basic music theory. It's much easier than many think. It's basically frequencies and how they relate with each other.

finally, here's some of my personal favorite guitar pieces, 2 acoustic and 2 electronic, from very different genres

Go to a Guitar shop with a £100/$130 price ceiling and grab yourself a second hand Yahama

Buy from an independent store
Not guitar centre
The indie's will treat you decent because they need you and know that if you have a good experience learning, you'll be back in a year to buy a high class instrument

Keep a goal in mind as you learn to keep you motivated.
Mine was to be able to play any Elliot Smith song.
Buy a cheap but not too shit or toy looking guitar. Realize its almost impossible and just simply stare at it for a year. Then realize you can play some chords. Play chords and stairway to heaven for 2 years and buy a better guitar. Most people don't get past chords but I played the shit out of stairway to heaven so I can play everything now. I'd get an acoustic, its too easy for an electric to sound like shit. 10 years later you'll be an autist playing fingerpicking slow ballads and thrash metal.
