Why is there a trend among music journalists - women in particular - to act like throwaway pop music is now some sort of transcendent art?

I first noticed it with 1989, it got even bigger and took on a racial element with Lemonade...and now they're doing it again with Harry Styles.

What caused it? When will it end? Why?

>first noticed 1989
>literally only example provided is Lemonade

C+, underdeveloped, cursory argument with little evidence. Anon, please see me in my office about doing a rewrite

Poptimism. Simply put, it surged up as a reaction to rockism (which is simply put the notion that the normative state of popular music is rock), then advertised itself as new and against prejudices and all that stuff.

Lifted straight from Robert Loss, who apparently is worthy enough to be featured in Wikipedia: "The rockist makes Art out of popular music, insists on serious meaning, and demands artists who sing their own songs and play instruments, preferably guitars; the poptimist lets pop be fun and, if not meaningless, slight. The rockist is a purist, the poptimist a pluralist; the rockist is old, the popist is young; the rockist is anti-commercialist, the poptimist could care less."

It's this notion that pop music is inherently more inclusive, more forward-thinking, more innovative, and that it cares less about the notions of authenticity in a celebration of consumerism.

Hence that what's going on right now.

I mean, do they really have to provide a list of 50 examples? If you read reviews halfway frequently, you'll know they're right.

OP is too young to remember when Beyonce's self-titled came out in 2013. Underage banned.

Can't wait for this entire "authenticity" discussion to die.

define "pop music"

unquestionably styles and beyonce are worthy of the designation, but I question your subjective evaluation of that categorizaiton

Zayn is the only worthwhile 1D member.

Pop music is actually quite good, from my point of view at least.
>>
its just following the current neoliberal zeitgeist
it'll end when that ends
because it's profitable, who cares if some random four piece in north dakota makes a good album if we could shill for a current celebrity under a giant label and make tons of cash
>>
>>72746877
1989 is unironically good, fuck off. Lemonade is overrated, though.

this guy look like a men in black alien tryna fit in

Media hype. They've been doing it since before Elvis.
>>
>>72746877
Poptismism has been going for years, and Madonna and Michael Jackson started it. Or rather, it was started with them. On a lot of things, it's right, but any rule-of-thumb is ultimately hazardous for the critic, and poptimism's limitation is its sociological bias.

"Pop" shouldn't even be a category.mainstream maybe, but "pop" as a label has always been flawe
