It's the 2nd of October

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

startin off the thread with another round of shit rodriguez reviews
here we goooooo

>Ka - Honor Killed the Samurai
The beats were ok, I enjoyed how cohesive the theme of the album felt. The rapping was pretty ass though. They came off as slow, monotone, and unintimidating without much of a purpose. I'm no authority on lyrical content either, but the lyrics on this album were generic and one note to the point of being hard to listen to near the end.
4/10

>Kaini Industries - 遥か彼方 (Haruka Kanata)
From the bandcamp page of this release:
"don't even ask me why I decided to upload this
i mean the thing is pretty sick but no one would listen to the second naruto opening for 3 hours"
Perfect.
Why did I put this in my wishlist/10

>DJ Katapila - Live DJ Set 12/31/14
Insane shit. แห่สดดนตรีพื้นบ้านหนองโก ชุดที่ 8 + 9 meets bubblegum bass. Idk what's up with Africans screaming random words over all of their movies/music/etc. but i want them to keep doing it.

>Gobby - No Mercy Bad Poet
Confusing. Mostly lo-fi electronic pop, but it's produced at a lot of points like a modern wonky record. There are also moments of extreme clarity in the production. This, along with the hi-fi videos that go along with the album, leave the listener wondering how much of the lo-fi aspect is for show, and how the album was produced at all.
7/10

>Sonic Youth med Mats Gustafsson og Merzbow - SYR 8: Andre sider af Sonic Youth
Neat concept. Musicians slowly enter and leave the stage throughout the 30 minute set, leading to a bunch of combinations in performance and instrumentation. It shows itself to build a lot better on a second listen. The second half of the record was easily the best, with Merzbow's noise slowly eating the rest of the set alive until he rests alone in the foliage.
7/10

>Nikos Veliotis, Taku Sugimoto, Kazushige Kinoshita & Taku Unami - カルテット
On second inspection, this is more or less the Onkyo album I've been looking for. Four people are placed in a room possibly near a highway, possibly full of beautiful vibrations. Sounds are slow and finite, and often placed far apart, but they always flow into each other. Aceghd is one of the most beautiful pieces I've heard in a long time, and the slow, tense build of Music for 4 Stringed Instruments acts as a perfect introduction.
If you want to try out the genre, here isn't a bad place to start.
9/10

>John Frusciante - Smile From the Streets You Hold
It's interesting to hear alt rock stripped down to such a bare minimum. v intimidating.

>s vs Jangle
easily the best matchup here.

sandy bull's fantasias is a wonderful little slice of primitivism made so by the first and last tracks, tumbling little glimpses into blues.

joe harriott's hum dono is a great, varied jazz album with an interesting trade-off between the nuanced styles of the instrumentalists (specifically the guitarist) and the occasional vocalist. the last track is fantastic.

s advances by a hair! thanks for playing Jangle.

>V/A - Katamari Fortissimo Damacy
>OST, Shibuya-Kei, P O P U ~ D E S U

Would it be too far to say that this may be one of the best video game soundtracks of all time? Probably not.

Its huge range of composers and features brings this to life, cleverly using themes to be catchy and stand on their own whilst implementing multiple genres. The combination of comfier acoustic instrumentation, touches of orchestra, and samba/tropical influences makes this feel like a pastel summer day. The microscopic samples, and personified bleeps make this feel greater than background noise for rolling a ball around.

And even with the precise arrangment on all these tracks, they easily contain carefree pop melodies that'll be sure to implant themselves in your mind. There's so many notable moments: the album's opening whistles, the trance/house voice in WANDA WANDA, the children's choir, the festival celebration of the main theme, the finale rock ballad(??).

I'm wondering how this may have existed without a game to go with hit. I can't hate this.

9/10

>Solid Space - space museum
>lo-fi synthpop

Similar to Pale Cocoon in texture, not quite as formless in terms of atmosphere, much more consistently enjoyable. Even with the 808. Not too deep lyrically, but they aren't too important here.

Fav Tracks: Tenth Planet, Destination Moon

>The Constructus Corporation - The Zigguraut
>Experimental Hip Hop, indie film soundtrack-core

Sad tin can robots do rap, to the story of two boys in a Ziggurat. When it isn't the collision of mechanics in Rick Flare, the sounds can become small like on Metatron One and Pooka. Watkin Tudor Jones is much more tolerable outside of Die Antwood-- ignoring the pop references and lyrics that hint at the shift to that group-- even while his face seems to be stuck in the permanent sneer of a Disney villain, he's got charisma.

There's obviously a large amount of effort in building the world this album takes place in. Comparable to Splendor & Misery; while that album builds its envioronment with the sci-fi noise disregarding the rapper, this album is inaccessible in that Jones is directly narrating its story. This gives its instrumentals and turntablism a bit more of a kick.

But the latter half of the album seems to throw most of what made the beginning interesting away. And I hate Yolani Visser. Fuck.

5/10

>Jam City - Classical Curves
>UK Bass, Collage

The idea of this being a "house remixed" version of R Plus Seven bears mentioning, but this album takes place in a different kind of microcosm. If R+7 is a sterile utopia, Classical Curves thrives and thrums in its dark undercarriage. Even in the garbage disposal of another plane, a luminescent city bustles and feels emotions, though somewhat subdued.

Her seems to be a factory line of models, while The Courts uses a clever squeaking sample amongst its choppiness. Club Thanz is lonesome with a hi hat and single synth chord at point, as if the machines orchestrating the Government Approved Sounds had glitched. The industrial house of Hyatt Park Nights is followed by a detached sax note and autonomous bass. Not to sure about that bonus track, though.

Recommending if you want one of them "post dance" albums.

at first, i wasn't too hot on it - i didn't really understand what feeling it was trying to portray. it was towards the end that it all sort of clicked, and it was a really unique feeling. one of the most strangely compelling listens i've had in a while.

>earwig - under my skin i am laughing
a product of the early 90s post-rock scene i haven't heard much of - the instrumentals are mostly gorgeous, made up of dreamy guitars and synth arpeggios. the vocals are, for the most part, a serious detriment, and i have no idea why they're there. check this out if you want semi-grating female vox over some very pretty music.

i've never heard electronic music sound so clean. not clean in production (it's notably lo-fi), but in arrangement; every song here is crafted with such attention to detail and preciseness that the whole record comes off as masterful. it sounds so good! it's so goddamn engaging! the musical ideas here are simple, yet evocative, and executed so brilliantly, with such care. the album has such an air of authority about it, like the prince knows he's some sort of master of this form. i might have to listen again now - often i found myself thinking something along the lines of "i could listen to this forever." a monumental achievement.

This was an endurance test. My actual enjoyment was about a 0/10 but it gets points for being a million years ahead of its time. I'm fascinated by how much it sounds like a shitty bandcamp noise album despite being made in the sixties. I can't really comprehend how it was made. Good stuff.

good review, i recommend checking out The Body for a slightly less good but still fantastic album that's only an hour long for when you don't have as much time
his two EPs are a bit more lo-fi, little more of a house influence, and don't have that same aura of mastery. they're still really good and To the Fifty Engineers is my favorite work of his, so if you're thirsty for more you still have that.

in case four releases isn't enough, he has side projects with a lot more output: DJ Metatron and Traumprinz. he gets more meme house here and a lot of it is pretty mediocre but theres some good stuff if you wanna keep digging into him i guess

I don't know, it sounds kinda like a watered down Syro. There's some cool bits, but Richard decides to stretch out his ideas so much you're tired of it during the first listen. On top of that, it's just underdeveloped in general, but it's nice to dance to and isn't particularly bad.

>Psychedelic Rock

A tight psych rock concept album. Reminds me a lot of the Kinks but with a more effective psychedelic style. At times, it has that lazery guitar sound that I often rave about in this style. The heaviness of that guitar isn’t quite on the level of Jefferson Airplane but there are some similar moments. Vocally, this reminded me a fair amount of The Who. I’ve heard a lot of comparisons between this and Tommy, I need to check that out soon. Anyway, this was tight, the unique instrumentation on tracks like “Private Sorrow” were huge standouts. Potential 4/5, just need to revisit it more.

3.5

Klaus Schulze - Irrlicht
>Progressive Electronic, Space Ambient

Really fascinating album historically. Apparently, this was one of the first albums in the whole “space ambient” thing but I don’t know enough to tell you if that’s true or not. Anyway, it maintains a nice spacey, mellow atmosphere with that organ (apparently not a synth wtf) really has a cool sound. Reminds me a lot of a video game soundtrack or a sci-fi score. A bit repetitive after awhile but it’s surprisingly engaging for something that verges on drone for parts.

>Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare
Oh gee, Stevey boy, this really sucks ass.
Vai does not seem to have any form of taste and should probably just work as a session musician.
I give him credit for not going full meedily meedily but this is fucking abysmal.
Only one or two tracks on this whole album are close to being listenable.
Almost every time Vai attempts to make a good riff, solo, etc. on this album, for some he reason he decides to just play whatever scale he's using in its entirety to finish it, which ruins it.
All of this without mentioning how mediocre the drumming and the bass is in this album.

Sorry transgod :( I still love you... Aesthetica is great though and doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Overall: 2.67

>A Wilhelm Scream - Ruiner

Post-hardcore isn't a good genre in my eyes, but I do have some post-hardcore guilty pleasures.. stuff that I listened to when I was younger that is catchy or whatever. Examples being A Day To Remember or Alexisonfire. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of those pleasures. It really was nothing more than run of the mill post-hardcore, which is bad because there are a fuck ton of artists in this genre.. most sounding the same. There wasn't anything worth listening to here.. the vocals were textbook, the music itself not catchy or fun. I didn't come out of this disgusted or annoyed, but rather feeling like I had my time wasted listening to post-hardcore 101. Get in the car of any slightly edgy teenager and flip a coin, if it lands on heads they'll be playing some sort of clone of this record.

2/5

>Enter Shikari - Take to the Skies

My thoughts on the previous album are pretty much the same here. Electronic X metal albums usually end up pretty bad, and this is another example of that. At least this album's vocals had some (not many at all) good moments.

>Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy

This album starts off with an alright indie pop-rock type of tune that immediately makes me wretch as how much fucking reverb he puts on his vocals.
The next track ,"Beach Life-In-Death," Is actually 3 tangentially related songs put into one cut for some reason, probably because Toledo thought it'd be cool to have a 12 minute long track. It seems like several times in this song he tries to make it crescendo but the incredibly shit production prevents any dynamics from occurring. Chopped vocals at the end of the third "movement" so to say are kitschy and useless. Should have been three songs.
Stop smoking is a pretty generic acoustic guitar track with only two lines worth of lyrics covering concepts that have been said countless times by other artists.
Following this is "Sober to Death" which attempts to mix his electric and acoustic sounds and fails, I also began to notice his self contradictory lyrics more on this track, I'm sure it's part of some higher concept I'm not aware of.
Next up is "Nervous Young Inhumans," which is okay, not offensive in any way and the little spoken word bit at the end isn't too bad either, if a tad annoying. This is also the part of the album where I remember he's a fucking furry and all the shit about being inhuman is vaguely about his fetish.
Bodys (get it? it's spelt wrong on purpose!) is more music about his problems etc. etc. nothing revolutionary, more of his poor singing voice, guitars are a bit more jangly here for lack of better term.

The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die (1994)
>east coast hip hop, gangsta rap, boom bap

Really fucking good, actually. I shouldn’t be surprised that an album as acclaimed as this one is good, but I like this a whole lot more than I thought I would, despite its issues. To start with the issues, it’s too long, like most ‘90s hip hop albums; the sex skits kill the album’s flow more than once (a sex skit /and/ a blowjob skit, disgusting slurping noises and all); some beats, while okay, seem more suited for other more nimble rappers; and the overtly sexual lyrics on a couple tracks don’t sit well with me. Other than all this, it’s fucking great. Biggie is a phenomenal rapper, he’s got a great voice and he deftly pulls off the balance between passionate and chill as hell. The beats are ‘90s boom bap nearly at its finest, the drums fucking bang and the synths, while still very ‘90s in a lot of ways, are immaculately chill. The non-sexual lyrics and the structure of the album is where this really shines, though. Biggie’s autobiographical lyrics are poignant, heartbreaking, and evocative, and the album really does play out like a movie, from Biggie’s birth and childhood to his “suicide” on the haunting “Suicidal Thoughts”, the album’s finest track. I suppose in this way the poppier tracks and the sex skits have their place, as they fill out the more care-free, hedonistic parts of Biggie’s life, but that doesn’t entirely excuse them, even if the rest of the album surrounding these aspects is wonderful.

CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange (2005)
>southern hip hop, conscious hip hop

Like a less active OutKast with worse rappers. None of the MCs here are really anything to write home about. They do their job and have some pretty damn fine bars, but they pale in comparison to the production, mostly. Kno’s production is definitely too smooth for my tastes, mainly because I’ve never cared much for this ultra-smooth, lethargic style of southern hip hop production, but its heavy emphasis on ride cymbals rather than hi-hats for rhythm gives the album a unique sound, and every beat has a cool mysterious vibe to it. Still too lethargic and underwhelming, but done pretty damn well.

2.5+

Isaiah Rashad - Cilvia Demo (2014)
>southern hip hop

One of the most aggressively mediocre hip hop releases I’ve ever heard. Everything here is totally fine, the production’s cool and spacey and Rashad’s a fine rapper, it’s just that nothing here goes above and beyond what a debut album/EP/demo/whateverthehellthisis normally does. There’s so much talent and potential here, it’s just not mined well at all. Rashad’s verses are occasionally clumsy, and I can’t shake the feeling that he sounds just like Kendrick Lamar but worse, and the production suffers a bit from too many cooks being in the kitchen, with each different producer having a slightly different sound that makes the album seem disjointed. The smooth, soulful production is great, but I’d really appreciate it if this sound was kept constant throughout the whole record, mainly because it fits Rashad’s voice the best. Very okay, but nothing more.

Yeah definitely do it. I honestly think The Chronic is an essential for any music fan. As generic a comparison as this may be, it's kinda like the yang to Doggystyle's yin. Lots of gruff and tough beats that compliment Snoop in a completely different way than Doggystyle. Surprised you've never heard it

Also, bummed you weren't big on the Rashad but I totally see where you're coming from.

9-/11

>Suicide - Suicide
The first 5 tracks were nothing special but still good no wave/synth punk (i love the synth sounds from this genre), but boy the last 2 tracks were out of this world with that drum machine drilling into your head with those washed out sounds in the background, amazing tension and vocals that are hilariously timed but then suddenly become creepy after a few seconds pass.
8-/11

>Even Oxen - Arrayed Above the Seraphim Lights
Quite typical but it works well. Though I'm a never a fan of heavy religious lyrics though they were much less prominent than I expected, except for "Luma", eugh.
I also realized I haven't seen bear here in ages
6+/11

>Shoji Aketagawa, Kan Mikami & Toshiaki Ishizuka - Daikanjyo
Bad free-improv for half of this; the usual jumbled rhythms with the same patterns. The rest was blues inspired folk with a prominent piano, however these parts also did not phase me in any way.
4+/11

>fish vs nat
macha's s/t album is nothing new in concept, but brilliant in execution- it blends traditional eastern instrumentation with the naturally "pretty" tendencies of western songwriting. the album's first half is more hectic and energetic, but where Macha really shines is its second half. the record calms down significantly, and allows the textures and melodies to truly breathe. the last 5 tracks or so are utterly gorgeous. fantastic album.

molly drake's s/t is a collection of songs from an era from which i've heard next to no music: the 50s. it has that crackly aesthetic that i really like, and molly's voice is rather pretty. the songs vary from average to great and are based almost entirely on the interplay between molly's voice and the piano. quite a good little sentimental compilation.

fish advances! thanks for playing nat. you might get that third prize!

Jane Birkin et Serge Gainsbourg - s/t
[1969]

First song "Je t'aime... Moi non plus" is a classic, with great vocals and amazing instrumental work; the rest of the record is forgettable and doesn't really work well together. Jane and Serge should've duetted more but instead they do single songs by themselves - which really hurts for example Gainsbourg whose tracks are insufferable.

just listen to this track & if you like it, go for the whole album. Starsailor is straight madness fireball insanity from outer space, and that track's a good example.

Erasamo is tight if you're into Brazilian music and stuff. Dead Kennedys is a little blunt lyrically iirc but it's good.

That might not be the best place to start with Screw, it seems like a random project. All Screwed Up, 3 In The Mornin Part 2 or June 27th are his most well known mixes so I say start with one of those

I'm not much into piano jazz but so far the Bill Evans Trio has impressed me, especially Village Vanguard. The bass playing of Scott LaFaro nearly stole the show from Evans. Probably gonna do Waltz For Debby next.

I also loved the Cecil Taylor albums. Unit Structures was like controlled chaos in musical form. Conquistador was amazingly hypnotic. Free jazz is growing on me more and more.

WHAT NEXT (after Waltz For Debby)
