So I met this girl on tinder, and she's pretty cool and funny- we get on alright.

One thing that bugs me is that she absolutely loves death/black/satanic metal. Literally she posts loads of cringey shit on facebook all about bloodbaths and 'satanic sluts'.

I literally cannot stand that sort of music, I'm a rock guy (Beatles, Kinks, Black Keys) and enjoy listening to songs that have some sort of structure. I gave it a chance (I asked her what her favourite song was and we swapped songs) and it was just shit. Total shit.

So does anyone have any recommendations for metal that is a bit 'softer' and more rock-y than what she listens to? Thanks for any replies.

yikes, you sound cringier than her
>>
>...songs that have some sort of structure

Can you admit you have no idea what you're talking about? I might link some songs then.

I'm curious, what's your opinion on hip hop?
>>
Is this bait? Don't tell her you unironically call yourself a rock guy and that your knowledge on music is shallow as fuck. She might realize that she's too good for you.
>>
this is the most accessible and catchy you're gonna get
but you don't deserve her
>>
The two songs she showed me were Jumalten kaupunki by Moonsorrow and Broderskapets Ring by Dimmu Borgir (which I actually sort of liked up until the middle of the song).

>I'm a rock guy (Beatles, Kinks, Black Keys)

I don't like metal that much and she has better taste than you.

Metalhead here. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and suggest some starting points.

First, know what you like. Extreme stuff like pic related wouldn't be your thing, so I can rule out all Metal bands that emphasize speed, aggression or harshness.

I take it your inclination is towards melody and memorable riffs/hooks. Do you like heavy harmonies and epic chord progressions? If you're looking for the Heavy Metal fundamentals, I strongly suggest the following:
1. Black Sabbath - The First Five Ozzy Albums, "Heaven and Hell" and "The Mob Rules"
2. Judas Priest - their entire '70s and '80s discography and "Painkiller"
3. Buffalo - "Volcanic Rock"
4. Lucifer's Friend - s/t
5. Mercyful Fate - "Don't Break the Oath"
6. Iron Maiden - Their entire '80s discography
7. Manilla Road - "Crystal Logic", "Mystification" and "The Courts of Chaos"
8. Pagan Altar - "Mythical & Magical"
9. Motörhead - "Overkill", "Bomber", "Ace of Spades" and "Iron Fist"
10. Pentagram - "Relentless," "Day of Reckoning" and "Be Forewarned"
11. Lester Maddox - "Gothic Lore"
12. Flower Travellin' Band - "Satori"
13. Sir Lord Baltimore - "Kingdom Come"
14. Rainbow - "Rising"
15. Dio - "Holy Diver", "Last in Line", "Sacred Heart" and "Dream Evil"
16. Trouble - "Psalm 9", "The Skull", "Run to the Light" and s/t
17. Fates Warning - "Awaken the Guardian"
18. Angel Witch - s/t
19. Cirith Ungol - "King of the Dead"
20. Saint Vitus - "Hallow's Victim"

Start with the heavier side of '70s side of psychedelic rock and work your way forward.

Also, check out Captain Beyond's s/t album. Worth it in every way.

Some songs from that era for reference:

>black/satanic metal
I kek'd.
Okay anon. As a metal fan since the early 80's I'll give you some entry-level shit from each main genre.
>Black Metal
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Both of these are on the more melodic side of black.
>Death Metal
Death - Symbolic
Bolt Thrower - Mercenary or Realm of Chaos
Entombed - Left Hand Path
>Thrash Metal
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver
Artillery - By Inheritance
Thrash is probably the best place to start. It's melodic and very often doesn't have growly vocals, which I know can be a turn off at first. Either that, or the genre up next.
>Doom Metal
Black Sabbath - Paranoid/Masters of Reality
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Pentagram - Relentless
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
This is traditional doom. Stoner doom is also an option, in which case:
Sleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
>Glam Metal
Van Halen - Van Halen
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance/Painkiller
Mötley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood
Big hair bands. If you lived in the eighties, which you obviously didn't, you remember these.
Also, >>72664464 is good too.

Good luck with your satanic slut, OP.
>>
Agreed with a lot of suggestions from other anons, but haven't seen Opeth mentioned yet. You might like it. Basically a mix of death metal and prog rock:

Thanks guys will give these a go! I appreciate the actual reply!

Would last question, who would you say is the first metal band? Like who identified fully as a metal band?
>>
>>72664733
Black Sabbath. They're widely considered to be the first heavy metal band.
>>
>>72664464
>Satori

Solidly recommend this album OP. Some of the best heavy psych rock/ proto metal around.
>>
>>72664733
black sabbath, even if they kinda ripped off coven
also the first time the name "heavy metal" was mentionned was in a steppenwolf song, so this is also kind of an acceptable answer
>>
>>72664159
>enjoy listening to songs that have some sort of structure.
turbopleb t b h

>>72664159
>I enjoy listening to songs that have some sort of structure
it takes some time to appreciate the structure of metal, because it's hidden beneath the heaviness and distortion, but it's there, don't worry
>>
>>72664733
keep in mind that every post making fun of you is also an "actual reply" as what you said is legitimately laughable and you shouldn't repeat it around people who actually listen to a lot of music
>>
>>72665034
Yeah please don't ever mention to your gf how you think metal has no structure

Assuming you've already heard Vektor, Vovoid's thrashier stuff, and Coroner, I'll give you some less obvious ones.

- Mekong Delta - The Music of Erich Zann
- Sadus - Illusions
- Despair - Decay of Humanity
- Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers
- Secrecy - Art in Motion
- Realm - Suiciety

>>72664375
