Why is Spiderland so influential? It sounds so generic. What were they doing at the time that no one else was?

wtf is that thing

Well, first off, their drummer was an absolute prodigy. He was about 20 when they recorded Spiderland and still blew the fuck out of most drummers ever. The other musicians really feed off his intensely precise drumming, creating very tense and angled music.

I would highly recommend you check out some of their demo recordings.

In the documentary you get to see live footage from a basement practice session for Good Morning, Captain and it is insane. This is good, but not quite the same as its just the demo playing over other footage.

dude no.
hes great, but prodigy?
dunno about that, but a really lovely drummer.

imagine theres no internet and every song you've ever heard is a pop song on the radio.

you dont live near a college or in a city so there's no scene. no one you know collects records or knows a thing about music history.

its just closed the door on certain types of structure and content.

Well for one, math rock was still pretty new when Spiderland came out, so that whole aspect of it was fresh. Don Cab didn't released their first record two years after it, to give you a bit of time frame.

They also used very stripped back instrumentation and used minimalistic arrangements which strayed from the more traditional sounds rock music is known for, often opting for several interlocking parts which made up one "whole sound" rather than several distinct parts which held their own place in a song (think typical rhythm and lead rock guitar divisions).

Could probably dig a bit deeper and list more. It's not that they were doing something no one else was doing, but what they were doing was still fresh in a more widely known cultural sense at the time they were doing it. That's really the more important part. I'm sure someone can list an obscure band from ten years earlier who were doing this stuff, but influence and obscurity don't pair very well. This was the formula that spread.

Also a lot of the influence Slint had came a long time after they actually released this record.

It's gloomy music about isolation done right, and by teenagers. They have mathrock elements that were pretty innovative for the time, combine that with the spoken word and the unbelievable atmosphere and you get a great album. It influenced plenty of bands that came many years after the album was released.

it's creepiing me out to

>That's really the more important part.

Their ages play a big part to the mystique too. They were teenagers. Literally children. And they created an album that showed an amazing depth of emotional thought for kids their age.

It was true greatness on a very human level. What those young guys were able to achieve in making that album together was something really special.

>generic

we can't be listening to the same album
