No, but if you want to learn music shit and stuff in depth, you'll start making better music sooner. Of course, there's nothing you learn in university you can't learn on your own, but going will increase your motivation and speed of learning said material. But if you do go, expect to be around a whole bunch of pretentious fucks that think they're going to "make it." Its completely optional.

No it's not. I work as an assistant engineer and I never went to college. Just accept that you're gonna have to be a runner for a few years. There are tons of useful books, but honestly 99% of your learning will happen by observing professionals during commercial sessions. After a year or so you'll be ready to assist, and you WILL be asked to

Unless youre living in an city with good ties in the music industry and people are being headhunted out of youre school theres really no need to get formal education in music production. If you want to work on your own creative output and not just be an engineer or help shitty local bands record their albums youre better off self teaching and finding production and recording methods that fit your sound/budget etc
