Both are great guitarists.

But Vai is much more eclectic, imaginative, interesting with a wider array of diverse songs...dude is seriously wacky and it comes out thru his music. His time with Zappa warped him pretty good.

Steve Vai is much more than just a shredder though. The composition on Passion and Warfare is really underappreciated. Joe Satriani just feels like he's playing over some default backing track. Also while Steve Vai wanks a lot, when he does play soulfully its pretty orgasmic.
